22.01.2022 Can we adapt our houses to suite the seasons? The main seasons to be concerned about are the summer and winter seasons. For optimal performance results in summer we need to limit the amount of heat penetration through all window openings. To achieve this all external window treatments and shade devises including external blinds, should be utilised. In the evening’s blinds, curtains and other window furnishings as well as the windows should be open to allow the evening breeze... to naturally cool the house. During the winter period we need to reverse the summer procedure. During the day all external blinds, Internal curtains and other window furnishings should be left in the open position to allow the natural sunlight to penetrate through the windows and heat the large solid mass surfaces of the house. In the evenings the blinds, curtains and other window furnishings as well as the windows should be closed to trap this natural heat in and store it when it required at night. Best practise is to install double glazed windows.

20.01.2022 How do you know which block to buy? In the southern hemisphere, north facing blocks are optimal. Obviously we can’t all live on north facing blocks and for those of us that are not so fortunate, don’t despair it takes a little more consideration during the design stage to take advantage of and work with the natural surroundings to create a comfortable house to live in.

14.01.2022 Energy efficiency design principal #3 Thermal mass Many people may have heard of this term but I am sure not many actually know what it means. Basically it is the ability of high density materials such as concrete and brick to be able to absorb and store the energy from the sun. Products like timber have low thermal mass and are not able to store the heat for long periods of time. Thermal mass is great in winter, all you have to do is open your window furnishings and allow the sunlight to penetrate through and heat the masonry surfaces. Close the furnishings at night to stop the cold entering the building. Obviously a window is required to allow the sunlight to penetrate through, so the quality of glass is important. The better performing glass is double glazed glass.

12.01.2022 Energy efficiency design principal #1 To create an energy efficient and sustainable home we first have to look at the land in which the house will be built on, the orientation and size of the building, the material selection we chose to build our house with and the impact the house will have for generations to come. It is important to delve deeper when considering the design of your home, as it will have a greater impact not only on your lifestyle but also your local environm...ent. When looking at your land you must consider your local surroundings and utilise these to your advantage. For example the shading by neighbouring buildings and trees, optimising the use of the sun and consideration of window positioning for air quality and to capture prevailing winds to create natural cross ventilation all contribute to the performance of your home.

11.01.2022 When building a new home can you over build the home? In the early 1980’s the average Australian house size was 162.2m2 with double the inhabitants of the current population. Today it's around 240m2 with fewer inhabitants yet with an abundance of technology and materials available, people are adapting their lifestyles to meet their desires such as home theatre rooms, gymnasiums, office spaces and the grand alfresco areas. We should also consider the long-term life of house. W...e should future proof the houses where we consider the internal layouts to be adaptable to accommodate all age groups. On ground floors where accessibility is easier its best to include a bedroom with ensuite and the provisions for future kitchen installation, wider doorways and passages included in original designs would mean less cost in years to come when the house is to be modified to accommodate the ageing occupant. Not all of us have the ability to choose the optimal piece of land in which to build our new house. Some are fortunate enough to purchase a block that already has a house on it, and others may not be able to afford to buy at all, but what ever your position remember you can cost effectively adapt any building to create efficient healthier homes. Is important to consider energy efficiency design principles to ensure that we live comfortably and efficiently. Providing an environment for future generations to enjoy.

11.01.2022 What is embodied energy? Embodied energy is the total energy that is consumed during the processing, deliveries and manufacturing of goods for the build. Recycled materials are fantastic to utilise on buildings as we not only minimise the impact on our landfill sites, we bring products back to life and save on energy as the product doesn't have to be produced from raw materials once again. ... Great recycled products are bricks. You cant throw a good brick away, especially the old early 1900's bricks. They are becoming so popular they actually cost three times more then a new brick, so if you are demolishing think twice before throwing away the bricks, you could actually make some money! By sourcing local recycled products you also minimise your carbon footprint as materials are not being transported such long distances. There are many products to use to create your own energy efficient home. Look to use as much recycled products as possible, bricks are very good.

08.01.2022 What are energy efficiency design principals? Many believe it’s the PC items (Prime Cost Item) such as taps, toilets appliance with star ratings that determine the energy efficiency of a house. These are just a small part of contributing factors that assist in making a house more sustainable. When we speak about energy efficiency or sustainable design principles we refer to the ENTIRE life cycle of the building, the products in which it is made from and its impact on the env...ironment. Over the coming weeks, we will be discussing each principle in detail.

01.01.2022 Energy efficiency design principal #2 Should the cardinal points of North, South East and West play a part in your house design? Regardless of block orientation there are several key design principals that will assist in creating a more comfortable energy efficient home. ... Northern Side should have larger window openings. The northern walls are best for capturing the winter sun to assist in warming the house. In summer it is best on the northern side to incorporate both man made and natural products such as Pergolas, Eaves and strategically placed deciduous tress to protect the house from the summer sun. Southern Side windows get virtually no direct sunlight throughout the year and during winter these windows can cause substantial heat lost. The windows on the south side should be designed to allow for cross ventilation yet small enough to limit heat loss during winter. Eastern Side windows don’t receive enough sun for warmth and also contribute to heat loss. During the summer period they receive the hot morning sun, which can cause the house to become uncomfortably as it heats up quickly. Western Side receives the afternoon sun; it is recommended that the windows on the western side should be kept to a minimum size. Shading of these windows is important, with the use of vertical forms of shading. It is also important to make sure that there is a sufficient amount of operable window space to allow the westerly breezes to cool the house.
