08.01.2022 'The opportunity to develop friendships with our students and learn of their resilience and perseverance has been priceless. 08.01.2022 Meet Fia!! I’m an Accounting student in my final year at uni. I love travelling (though not in the current circumstances!)... I started volunteering with DREAM Project in mid 2019. My role was to be one of the school program mentors for high school girls of refugee background. This included preparing materials and facilitating some of the sessions. We had fortnightly meetings and, overall, through the experience I have learnt a lot and have had lots of laughs while we’re at it! One of the funniest moments was only recently. Before the lockdown started we had a team meeting scheduled, but our normal place was closed because of the pandemic. So as a last resort, we met right outside in the only shaded place we could find so we could see the laptop. But that was on the footpath, under a tree! The few people passing by probably didn’t appreciate our dedication - we were blocking their way! You probably had to be there to appreciate it... This is us on that day:

06.01.2022 To end #NationalVolunteerWeek ! Meet Sim!! I’m currently a second year Law student, majoring in Social Justice at Macquarie University. I’ve been a volunteer with DREAM Project for a while. ... I've helped out with excursion days for families of refugee background. Once, we had a day out in the city. For many of them, it was their first time! We had a pretty funny moment that day. I had to take some of them to the bathroom at the NSW Art Gallery. I hadn’t been there for a long time so I wasn’t familiar with the place. Being the guide, that made things a bit difficult. On the way back to the group we got lost. We walked up and down the same flight of stairs a few times. Their feet were sore and we looked at each other at one point and all started to laugh uncontrollably. The girls, their mum, aunt and I we were all laughing together, bridging the language barrier, seeing the humour of the situation. It was a good ice-breaker but embarrassing on my part!"

05.01.2022 Meet Sarah!! "I am a young mechatronic engineer who loves to learn about the ever growing world of technology. I met DREAM at UNSW whilst studying and loved the idea of an opportunity to help young women like myself chase their dreams and aspirations! ... I started out initially as an academic coach helping our DREAM students in schools almost 4 years ago. Now I help to recruit new volunteers from universities and beyond. Volunteering is always a two way street there is so much you can offer to others and so much you can learn and grow on the journey. Happy Volunteering!!" #DREAMProject#dreamaustralia#DaretoDream #NationalVolunteerWeek2020 Sarah Howells
