25.01.2022 These times are for the old time and have you waking your little one at 7am new time on Monday
24.01.2022 http:// Case Study: From Chaotic Sleep to Sleeping Through! // Recently I started working with a 9 week old boy. He was struggling with daytime settling, not reaching age appropriate awake times, catnapping and his day sleeps were really broken. He was also awake for long periods overnight! Talk about exhausting! ... this week he slept through the night! Big difference! But it wasn’t a quick fix. There was lots we needed to do to get here There was a fair bit going on with this little guy that made him so unsettled. Both mum and dad were very involved (which I love!) and both had a gut feeling that there was more going on and he was really struggling And guess what!?! They were right! There were ties to be released and intolerances to identify and manage. The ties were relatively straight forward as I have an amazing network of people I work with. But intollerances can be a bit more work. Luckily with this little guy we only had to eliminate and change a few things to find his triggers and he responded really quickly to them. He was about 12weeks when we finally got a much happier and settled baby. Mum couldn’t stop commenting on how happy he was. One week after cutting out his last food trigger he slept through the night with only a few tweaks to his environment and routine. We couldn’t believe the change in this little guy sleeping through at 12 weeks!! Now this isn’t an average age for this but when you set the best possible conditions for sleep and address the underlying issues you little one is able to show their best possible sleep. Now we still had daysleeps to work on - they were still very chaotic. We worked to set up the best sleep environment, a great routine (which needed tweaking a few times especially with such good quality night sleep) and continued to work on his feeding. It wasn’t long before we were seeing both great days and nights! We managed to get them sorted just in time for the 4-month sleep regression! And just like other families I have worked with at this age they barely saw a blip as we had met every need and addressed all issues All last week he slept 12-HOURS IN A ROW!! Without any work to drop feeds - no encouragement needed!! When looking back you see such big changes and differences. We went from a family on the edge of breaking and a mum on the verge of tears to the last time we spoke - she sounded confident and rested. You can’t underestimate a mum who is in the best place for her baby! This is what happens when you fix the REASON for poor sleep AND address sleep QUALITY! Catherine

21.01.2022 http:// Top Tip // Do you have a little one who sleeps and settles well? If so and suddenly settling gets really hard then get them checked out by a GP for an ear infection. So often I see this happen and well meaning mums online say it must be a leap or growth spurt etc - wait it out. No!. Always get your little ones checked!! Quite often the only symptoms of something like an ear infection is settling issues. When they lay down the change in pressure makes their ears hurt more. 10.01.2022 So many mums when talking about sleep will say I know I have created a habit. Or I know this is my fault. Or I know there are things I need to break. NO!! // You do not create your children’s sleep problems! // I have had many conversations with mums recently which has led me to remind you of this important fact. ... The amount of times parents come to me and say ‘I know I caused this’ or ‘I know it’s my fault’ when we talk about what’s happening with their little ones sleep still astounds me YOU DID NOT CAUSE IT!!! Please do not think you did! Sleep issues happen and it’s nothing to do With you. There is always a reason behind every sleep issues and that reason is not you - their loving parent. All sleep issues have an underlying cause. You didn’t create that by cuddling, rocking or feeding your little one to sleep. You didn’t create the problem by co sleeping. You dealt with the sleep issue by cuddling, rocking or co sleeping. Or whatever else has happened. We do what we need to to cope with things. To survive. That was a way to manage not the cause. Our little ones brains recognise when something physical is making sleeping away from you as too hard and their brains flag this as a risk. This is a response from the amygdala. This can be why you can only achieve sleep in one way or with you. This helps them cope. Their brain is seeking out the safest possible conditions for sleep. If we work out WHY we can change this and make achieving sleep in other ways possible and also much better QUALITY sleep. There is no right or wrong when it comes to parenting. Just a point where it isn’t working for you anymore and you need help. When things aren’t working and you need a change. When you need help. You shouldn’t be afraid to ask. It is not a sign that you haven’t done an amazing job. Or that you aren’t doing a lot of things that are great for sleep. It just means that there are pieces of the puzzle missing. Sleep is a puzzle. I am the person who can put it together for you. Find the missing pieces. Work out the physical aspects of sleep. When you bring it all together what you see is great sleep. 08.01.2022 http:// THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! // As you would know I usually post my own words but this post is so important to share. It reflects my views so perfectly that I didnt want to rephrase it THIS is why I do a THOROUGH assessment of all clients for underlying causes. It is the very first thing I do ... 99% of other sleep professionals DON'T DO A PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT and not PRIOR to anything else or in the detail I go in to SLEEP ISSUES ARE A PHYSICAL PROBLEM I find a reason in ALL MY CLIENTS Yes it may start with something smaller like nutrient deficiencies or food interfering with sleep but it ranges up to issues like this Children do not not sleep for no reason. It is almost always treated as a behavioural issue and the physical is missed. You cannot fix a physical problem with a behavioural approach. This post focuses on ENT. There are many physical issues so it is not always an ENT problem But there is *always* a problem to be found if you know what to look for. The issue is most do not know what to look for. And even medical professionals who deal with these issues only deal with one or two. They arent able to look for ALL the issues Mostly the issue is not something that is as serious as is this on their whole health which is why they are missed But parents usually wouldn't know if it is serious or not Trying to fix an issue like this with sleep training wont work As a colleague described it is negligent Yet, so many sleep professionals would still try! Please read this post it if you even slightly suspect that your child is not sleeping how they should be. As I say to everyone I talk to informed is best. Unfortunately most are not informed on the real issues with sleep and how to approach it. 06.01.2022 I had an amazing day today working with Mother's Group Done Differently and helping mums with up to 5 month olds with sleep. I think we definitely started getting answers for some mums and helped give others some good foundations to build good sleep. I cant wait to go back tomorrow to help some mums with older bubs

03.01.2022 http:// Awake Times or Set Routine? // This is a question I get asked a lot. Most clients come to me using awake times. So what works best? Awake Times or Set Routines? ... For little babies awake times work really well Once your bub is coming out of the newborn period Set Routines work much better. // WHY? // Set Routines set your little ones circadian rhythms. Most clients when they come to me need a full reset of their circadian rhythms which is what we can do with a suitable set routine. When using a set routine your little ones body learns to be receptive to sleep at the same time each day. This helps with nice long sleeps and easily falling asleep. It also helps with early rising as the timing of the first sleep of the day affects the time they wake the following day. Its all about hormones. This is what governs our circadian rhythms and we can set these hormones to start the day at a certain time and to expect sleep at a certain time by using set routines. // So if using Set Routines what Routine should I use? // I dont provide routines for different ages as I find from about 4 months it varies so much based on each individual. I find giving a set routine based on age and no personalised help just doesnt work as it can vary so much. This is why sleep books and sleep programs just dont work. If your child isnt in the average then a set routine based on age can set you up to feel that you failed as if it isnt right for your little one it just wont work. Each child is an individual and routines need to be adapted as such. The routines I work with are based on 10 yrs of research and are applied based on what your little one communicates to me when we start working together. Then based on how they respond they are further personalised to find their perfect routine. You then learn how to adjust these as they grow and change by learning to read your little one the way I read them. Do you feel like your current routine or awake times arent working? 01.01.2022 http:// When do I change routines? // This comes up all the time and is definitely something you learn well in my consultations but I thought I would share some tips here When is the right time to move routine? ... And what move? How will I know when to do it? There are a few signs to look for BUT The first thing to know is That needing more awake time Is a NEUROLOGICAL change And they really do NEED to be awake for longer Before being TIRED enough to sleep well rather than just have a short sleep or catnap It can present in different ways depending on your child but there are common signs to look for If your little one doesnt have enough awake time They may start to have difficulty with settling OR They may settle But then have difficulty having a long sleep so you will get a catnap or short sleep And this can result in getting really overtired. Which can impact everything. They also may start to wake earlier in the morning. Dont mistake this for needing to put them down early - they usually need to go down later. So when you see these signs and you are confident on every other aspect its time to make a change I usually find routines need to be moved by 20 mins to see good effect. But make sure you have every other aspect covered first. If your baby is hungry, cold, in pain etc then they need these needs met before a routine change Unsure what your little one needs? 01.01.2022 http:// Why Sleep Training Doesn’t Work // I know that sleep has been rough with your little one And when this happens I can guarantee you have been recommended sleep training more than once ... Usually we hear this coming from well-meaning friends and family, and sometimes even from professionals we see Most of you will have a gut feeling that it isn’t right. And us mums have good guts - we need to listen to them more We are told that sleep training works. What we are not told, is exactly WHY you are being told it works, and what exactly it does do. Research proves that sleep training doesn’t improve the QUALITY of sleep. The frequency of waking DOESN’T CHANGE and the sleep is NOT MORE RESTORATIVE Sleep training also isn’t something you do once and you are done. You needs to keep doing it. Every development, change or after illness you need it So, what you are being told ‘works’ for sleep is not a REAL improvement of the sleep. What it does is it causes your child to STOP asking for HELP We don’t want to teach our children to not ask for help. We want to teach then that we meet their needs and when they need us we are there. At best sleep training is a BANDAID. And at worst, it is TRAUMATIC for all of you as you are pushing through against what your little ones brain is needing. So, what is the answer then? And remember I said WAIT IT OUT isn’t the answer either Yes this can be a better option - because you are responding to your child’s needs HOWEVER it doesn’t actually do anything for the QUALITY of the sleep either. The root cause is still there causing disrupted sleep So if sleep training and wait it out aren’t the answer then what can you do to improve the actual QUALITY of sleep? We need to IDENTIFY the underlying issues, ADDRESS them and RESOLVE what is causing the sleep difficulty in the first place. AND meet all their NEEDS This is what I do!
