07.01.2022 One of the things that I really enjoy doing as part of my job is viewing and reviewing your Western Medicine pathology results. There is so much information that we can obtain and help to streamline your treatments and improve clinical outcomes. I assess your blood work from a Functional Medicine and a Chinese Medicine point of view. Functional medicine pathology parameters are more narrow than the ones that your GP or specialist will be concerned with. This is why you ...will often tell me that your a doctor said that everything was great with your bloods! The benefit of working with functional medicine parameters is looking at getting your bodys pathology to an optimal level so that you can enjoy the best quality of life possible. For example, one that I see often is Ferritin levels, these are your iron stores. The pathology labs have their low range as low as 20-25ug/L. Whereas from a functional medicine perspective, I like to see Ferritin levels at 100ug/L at the low range. Anyone who has a Ferritin range under 100, will know that they dont feel their best. Theyll be tired, they might have trouble sleeping, or be experiencing anxiety among other symptoms. I want you feeling your best, and getting your pathology within optimal ranges will help achieve this. When I view your pathology through my Chinese Medicine filters, this is about assessing what we call your Chinese Medicine pattern or diagnosis. I assess to see if your pathology results align with the CM diagnosis that I have been treating you for in clinic. To go back to using Ferritin as an example, in Chinese Medicine, the Liver is in charge of storing the Blood, and the Spleen is in charge of making the Blood. Therefore, I would be treating the underlying Liver and Spleen disharmonies that present. I hope this helps shed some light on why Ive sent you home with a list of blood tests that I would like to see.
