12.01.2022 Do You Know Your Horse’s Vital Signs? The most common equine vital signs include heart rate, temperature, respiration and abdominal sounds. By knowing what is n...ormal for your horse, you will be able to quickly detect any changes in normal behaviour or health, if it is stressed due to injury and how to gauge the urgency of any health situation that may arise. The average resting heart rate or pulse for a horse ranges from 25 to 45 beats per minute (bpm), during strenuous work the heart rate can rise to 240 bpm. The heart rate can be heard directly through the chest with a stethoscope placed behind the left elbow of the horse. Count the beats over an accurately timed 30 second period, then double the number counted to obtain the rate in bpm. It is important to take the resting heart rate when the horse is quiet and relaxed to obtain an accurate reading. A horse’s body temperature is one of the best indicators of his state of health, a horse’s normal rectal temperature ranges is 36.5C to 38.5C. The body temperature naturally increases to 40 - 41C during exercise as energy is metabolised releasing heat into the muscles and blood. A horse’s body temperature is usually the lowest in the morning and highest in the mid-afternoon, rugging, exercise and hot environments can increase a horse’s core temperature by at least 1 degree. A reading of 40C or higher in a resting horse is a cause for serious concern, and your veterinarian should be called immediately for advice. At rest, a normal mature horse would have a respiration rate of 8 to 16 breaths per minute, whilst young horses have a higher rate of 12 20 bpm. You can easily feel the breath from your horse’s nostrils on your hand, or watch the nostrils dilate as the horse inhales to observe their respiration rate. Normal abdominal sounds include ‘gurgles’, ‘rumbles’ and ‘squeaks’, which should be heard frequently on both sides of the abdomen to indicate normal digestion. The reduction or absence of gut sounds may indicate a serious risk of colic, whereas continuous rapidly moving gut sounds or ‘sloshing’ sounds may be an indication of excessive gut motility and risk of diarrhoea. A horse should pass 6 10 manure piles and urinate 3 4 times daily. Keeping a horse health diary and recording the readings of your horse’s vital sign measurements, is an easy and effective way to keep track of your horse’s health. For more information on the Vital Signs email [email protected] for a free copy of our fact sheet ‘The Vital Signs’.

12.01.2022 The shoulder-in prepares a horse to be put on its haunches, because with each step taken in this posture it carries the inside hind leg forwards under the bell...y and brings it over to the outside hind leg, which it can do only by lowering the haunch: it is thus always on one haunch in one direction, and on the other haunch in the other direction, and learns in consequence to bend its hocks under itself; this is what is called being on the haunches. 10.01.2022 WE DON’T SCORE SUITABILITY - WE SCORE THE TRY! Suitability is defined as "the quality of having the properties that are right for a specific purpose". Cowboy Dr...essage is about getting the absolute best out of both you and your horse. It is a personal journey to correctness of form, lightness of aids, and elevated communication between rider and horse. It is NOT about which horse has the "springiest" movement, or stretchiest jog, or lowest headset. It is about where you are today and where you are going tomorrow. Cowboy dressage has a come one, come all attitude of inclusion. You and your horse, no matter your ability, background, breed, age or training style are welcome to participate, share, learn and grow for the improvement of the movement of the western style horse. There are no training packages or special tack items that you need to buy to participate in Cowboy Dressage. Nobody is going to tell you to ride with one hand or not to ride in your ranch saddle fresh off the range. There is no "type" or "breed" of horse that is designed to excel in this endeavor and that is why judging a horse on its ability to respond to lightness and correctness before its journey has even begun has no place in Cowboy Dressage. Let me just make this perfectly clear. If you are a rider who embraces the Western style and you have a horse that you would like to help reach his full potential as a correct and responsive partner in ANY western discipline, you and your mount both are very well suited to Cowboy Dressage. Welcome, friend, and let the journey begin.

05.01.2022 To help your horse become lighter in front Imagine your horse’s haunches and forehand as sprocket wheels inside a machine. Your leg and seat control the back ...sprocket wheel, which turns and brings the hind end under. Your hand controls the front one, which keeps the front end aligned with the hind end, creating energy into the bridle. The horse lifts his front end by shifting weight rearward through his whole body; that’s what makes him lighten in front. Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel Illustration by Sandy Rabinowitz
