24.01.2022 Counter Canter! See my rising 4yo stallion Ebano and I at our first attempt at this exercise. After the normal canter is rythmical and forward, I like to use count canter to help straighten the horse (yes...even at this age straightness should be worked on) and also get more stretch and reach through the outside shoulder.... Notice I don't bend the horse to the outside..this would only limit the stretch of the outside shoulder. Questions and comments welcome

09.01.2022 YOUNG HORSE TRANSITIONS - DOWNWARD Ebano LP has had 6 weeks off and is filmed here on ride 2 back in work. I feel that videoing your ride at regular intervals throughout the months is an excellent training tool that shows you the progress you are making.... In this short video, I show three transitions.... *trot to walk *trot to halt through walk *trot to halt. You can see that as the transitions get harder, the quality of the transition gets worse. This is totally normal when teaching the young horse. My goal is to improve these three transitions by 3 marks in 3 weeks. If they are a 5 or 6 now, I would like to consistently acheive an 8 or 9 in 3 weeks with targeted training....lets see in the next video if we acheive this goal By repeatedly training downward transitions you will improve the horses balance and responsiveness. I always want the horse to 'think forward' in downward transitions, so that the horse does not do sudden jerky tranditions and stays infront of my leg instead of sucking back behind the bit and leg. I acheive this by changing between trot- walk, trot-halt and trot-walk-halt. Sometimes I will even do reinback as well...keep the horse thinking and do not make your riding too predictable. And always finish in relaxation and with a reward!

09.01.2022 A couple of lesson spots have become available At Villa Do Sol, Banjup Western Australia, PM us or comment below to register your interest.

07.01.2022 .........TRAINING THE YOUNG HORSE........... There are many methods of teaching a horse to carry a rider. What they all have in common is that they are systematic and comprise of many steps put together in a sequential way.... I believe in taking time to start the young horse under saddle. On average, my own horses are started over a 6 month period. This allows each individual step in each 'phase' to be thoroughly consolidated, and the next step is always a tiny one rather than a huge leap. First, the horses are taught to lead and tie up properly; moving away from pressure is the essential first step. Lunging follows and then a little long reining. What these things do is to teach the horse the importance of moving forward, as well as teaching the horse to engage with the trainer and develop WORK ETHIC. This stage of the training is so important and cannot be rushed without dire consequences. Having a rider is now no big deal. It is a logical evolution in the process and in my experience, has never led to any issues at all. Simply adding a 'sit' on your horse at the end of your lunge or longreining session is a non stressful and easy way to start the next phase of training. Soon, the horse is walking, turning and stopping for short 5 min bursts with no drama and no effort. This then turns into trotting, transitions and working in a larger arena. One day, the canter is encouraged and repeated, and the basic training is complete. Over this 6 month period, the horse has had TIME to process each step of each phase both mentally and physically. See some photos of my two young stallions through their journey from unstarted to basic training

07.01.2022 WELL DONE to Dana and super pony Snickerz on a great season so far.... A win at the PCAWA Showjumping Championships and a 2nd in their first ever ODE at Wallangarra on the weekend. Well done Dana! Proof that correct dressage training helps in every aspect of horse performace

06.01.2022 PASSAGE-PIAFFE TRANSITIONS A short video explaining how to start training these highest degree of difficulty transitions. Imagining 'the bicycle' is one of the things that I found to be most influential in being able to do these transitions.... Over time, my horse Quiby became much stronger at these, and performed them quite seamlessly. See more
