25.01.2022 Hey, do you feel stuck with your healthcare? Do you feel you struggle to be heard and feel like you’re not even sure what is happening with your body and mind? I’m a doctor and I hear this all the time. I get it. You want to feel like you’re in control rather than your illness controlling you. It is the understanding and the knowing that can really empower you and allow you to take control of your health and illness. ... My patients are always telling me that they are so grateful that I take the time to listen and help them work out what is going on with their health and wellbeing. It is so important to get to the root cause of the problem rather than just managing it. It is paramount that I explain why I am recommending a treatment or a test. My management will always include advice about nutrition, lifestyle and what you can do to optimise your health. We will always talk about how your health is impacting your mental wellbeing too. I treat you as a ‘whole’ you and not just a symptom or condition. I am on your side and I am here to help you live your best life. This is what being a good doctor is all about. See more

25.01.2022 ‘We are each a whole person, and holistic practice is key.’ @drumanaidoo . For me this was wholly profound as the essence of my practice as a doctor and health professional. We are whole people, not just one condition or symptom. We must look at health in an integrative way to get the best outcome. This is what we practice at ‘The Modern Dr’, this is the centre of our values.

24.01.2022 To all the mums, iron deficiency doesn’t just affect adults. Only yesterday I was speaking to a local perth paediatrician about this topic and he told me that a staggering 40% of children are iron deficient. I am shocked and surprised by this statistic. This deficiency can present as tiredness and fatigue but could also be presenting itself in their behaviour; Tantrums, irritability and disruptive behaviour. I don’t recommend blood tests in children unless they are absol...utely necessary. I have seen the distress and trauma that unnecessary testing often causes. My own daughter is terrified of needles. My advice is that you consider giving an iron supplement in the form of a multivitamin to your children. I will be adding this to my daughter’a regime. A little food for thought. See more

22.01.2022 CONTRACEPTION I see a lot of posts about the horrors of contraception and how the hormones within the contraception are artificially affecting your body and how they are really bad for you. I want to ensure you are informed about contraceptives. ... Some types of hormonal contraception work by suppressing your own hormones and replacing these with synthetic hormones that then stop you from ovulating and prevent pregnancy from happening. Other contraceptives, work not by stopping ovulation but thinning the lining of the uterus and preventing implantation. Contraceptives can have side effects and affect your mood. This is something that should be discussed with your doctor to find the best contraceptive for you. When I see posts telling women not to use contraception it really upsets me. Consider this, women need contraception to stop them from having an unwanted pregnancy. The mental health issues that come from unwanted pregnancies is very real. I have seen these. Natural Rhythm methods are not effective purely for the reason that many women have cycles that are not completely regular. Condoms are only 82% effective as contraceptives (but do prevent against Sexually Transmitted Infections very effectively). Once a contraceptive is discontinued the cycle should return to normal. The different types of contraception: 1. Combined oral Contraceptive Pill - contains both oestrogen and progestogen. Very commonly used. 2. Mini Pill - contains only progestogen. 3. Implanon - this is a bar/rod that is inserted under the skin, contains only progestogen. This is the most effective contraception available 99.95% effective. 4. Mirena - this is a coil device inserted into the uterus and has locally acting progestogen and works by thinning the lining of the womb to prevent pregnancy. 5. Depo Injection - probably the least favoured but an effective contraceptive none the less. This is progestogen only and injected into a muscle. This is the only hormonal contraceptive that can have a delayed return to normal cycle. (Cont in comments) See more

21.01.2022 Laxity, dullness and fine lines are things we all want to avoid in our skin. Here’s why I believe this H.A intensifier is an amazing product that targets that dehydration and those pesky lines that you see quietly forming. It really has been a game changer for me and my patients. I love this product because it is backed by science. Hyaluronic acid is a great hydrator but it’s a very large molecule that sometimes makes it hard to be absorbed by the skin. This is where t...he H.A. Intensifier uniquely combines Hyaluronic acid with proxylane and licorice root extract to actually protect your skins natural Hyaluronic acid. The H.A. Intensifier has been shown to increase Hyaluronic acid content in your skin by 30% and plumpness by 23% in a 12 week study. . . . . . . #skineceuticalsau #healthywithinbeautywithout #skinhydration #hydration #stayhydrated #healthylifestyle #healthyskin #skincare #perthhealth #wellnessperth #perthwellnesscommunity #haintensifier #womenshealth #perthgp #perthdoctor #perthhealthcare #instadoc #doctorsofinstagram #womeninmedicine #doctorslife #preventativehealth #preventativehealthtips #hyaluronicacid #preventativehealthawareness #instawellness #socialclubmembership See more

21.01.2022 Are you working for your skin? Our skin has multiple layers that each have their own function. These keep out harmful bacteria, radiation, pollution, environmental factors etc. In the bid to keep us safe our skin (and each of its layers) over time becomes more damaged. The epidermis dulls and thins. It develops pigmentation and can become increasingly dryer. ... The dermis loses collagen and elastin causing sagging. Fine lines appear and blood vessels thin which causes the skin to bruise more easily. The fat layer is lost and thins over time. Bone is resorbed. Causing the skin to sit ever more loosely. With all of these things going on, it’s important that you take care of your skin just as it takes care of you. The best thing you can do for your skin is to wear a good sunscreen. After that invest in a good skin care regime recommended by a trained professional. Someone who really understands YOUR skin. We are all different and so are the needs of our skin. How are you taking care of your skin. Let me know. I would love to hear! See more

18.01.2022 Could iron deficiency be making you tired? I see this so often in my practice. Women attend my clinic and feel fatigued. They often put this down to life. Maybe they’re working long hours or navigating motherhood. Or Starting a new business venture. Making excuses for why they might feel tired. In this 21st Century, we’ve seemingly normalised a feeling of tiredness and fatigue as right of passage of life. You shouldn’t feel tired all the time. It’s not normal. ... A lot of women have iron deficiency that they are unaware of which can lead to anaemia. This is usually down to heavy periods but can be a result of gut issues and a poor diet. Iron deficiency is easily fixed with an infusion. I don’t recommend iron supplements because the side effects of these are terrible. My patients come back feeling great after an infusion and they often can’t believe how much the fatigue was affecting their lives. I would suggest that if you feel tired that you see a doctor to have a blood test. See more

18.01.2022 Hey ladies, take good care of your vagina. Our vaginas are lined with good bacteria that remain perfectly balanced when our vaginas are healthy. If that balance is tipped it can mean an excess in certain bacteria or yeast causing irritation and excess discharge. Infections like BV and thrush. The kind of things that tip the balance usually alter the pH, these include excess washing, yes excess washing. Soaps, perfumes. The wrong underwear. Sanitary pads, tampons. But ...did you know that even the food you eat affects that delicate balance and a diet high in processed sugars can perpetuate thrush. If you suffer from recurrent thrush consider having a chat with your doctor because you may need a blood test. Low iron and a high blood sugar can cause recurrent thrush. Take good care of yourself. #healthywithinbeautywithout See more

15.01.2022 If you're considering an infusion (and you should if you're feeling tired, burnt out, eating badly, not sleeping, have no motivation) you may not know know what the process involves and this can sometimes feel daunting. We wanted to share with you what you should expect at your infusion with us @fourivtherapy by @themoderndr.perth. 1. A consultation with a trained professional. ... 2. A discussion about what vitamins will be most beneficial for you and a treatment plan. 3. A cannula is inserted into the arm as depicted. It really isn't painful. Like having a blood test. The needle does NOT stay in your arm but only the plastic tubing. 4. The vitamins are then infused into the vein. 5. You get to relax during the process. 6. Once complete, the tubing is removed. @jennydelargie was amazing at letting us take her picture. How relaxed does she look? We will be opening bookings for our signature infusions. Join our VIP members society if you want first dibs at getting an infusion. See more

12.01.2022 Lockdown has you feeling completely Meh! I totally get it. It’s not how we envisaged that first week back to school or that start to 2021. I can imagine the stress it is causing a lot of you. I’ve certainly been affected by it. We know that high stress environments can affect immune function. To function at your best and be in the best place for optimum wellness you need a well functioning immune system. ... What works well to manage stress is to ensure that we are getting adequate nutrition and the right types of vitamins and minerals into our bodies to help support us through these difficult times. Consider taking Magnesium (in the form Magnesium citrate), Vitamin D, Vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids and Zinc to support a healthy immune system. Look at strategies to manage your stress such as meditation, and relaxation techniques, exercise/physical activity. Use your 1 hour per day to take a beach walk or swim in the ocean. If you don’t live in a neighbourhood close to the sea, try taking a walk in a local park. Turn off your devices. Get 7-8 hours of sleep. These will do wonders for your stress and will in turn boost your immune system. Your immune system is going to be your best defence against Covid-19. Take good care of it. To all of those who have been affected by the fires, my heart and my prayers go out to you. We are all holding space for you. You are phenomenally strong. See more

10.01.2022 I am seriously convinced of this. I have more lids than I have containers for and have you noticed that the lids never fit the container. I swear that there must be some inter-dimensional portal sucking up socks and spitting them out as Tupperware lids. Is it just me?

08.01.2022 Today marks the end of October. October is breast cancer awareness month and unfortunately this month I have had to tell one of my beautiful ladies that she has had a recurrence of her breast cancer. This post has been created to remind you to check your breasts regularly. Know them well and that way if they change in any way you can see your doctor promptly. HOW TO EXAMINE YOUR BREASTS AT HOME.... 1. Draw an imaginary cross, with the centre at the nipple. This divides the breast into four quadrants. 2. Use the pulse of your fingers and roll them firmly methodically and examine each quadrant individually. 3. Don’t forget to examine over the nipple and areolar. 4. Feel in each armpit to ensure no lumps. Pro.tip: Always examine your breasts at the same time in your cycle as your breasts can change with your menstrual hormones. For those of you who are fabulous and over 40, ensure you participate in the breast screening programme. @tristanb See more
