23.01.2022 How does my baby get food? When pregnant, placenta develops and attaches to the wall of your uterus with a blood supply which allows oxygen, antibodies, immunity and energy (fats, carbohydrates and proteins) to pass from you to your baby. The placenta also filters out harmful elements such as bacteria to keep the baby safe, however substances like caffeine and alcohol can still pass through. After this filtering process, the nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood is passed to the ...baby through the umbilical cord, which attaches to your baby’s belly button. Waste products also leave the baby through the umbilical cord, before entering your bloodstream to dispose of. Until your baby is born, it cannot breathe on its own, so all oxygen must enter via the umbilical cord. Once you give birth, your baby will take its first breaths. #obgyn #womenshealth #pregnancy #obstetrics #gynaecology #doctor #gynaecologist #obstetrician #health #medicine #midwife #surgery #pregnant #ultrasound #medical #healthcare #women #fertility

17.01.2022 The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists says most pregnant women should not get a COVID-19 vaccine at this stage due to insufficient data and a low number of cases in Australia. https://www.smh.com.au//wait-for-more-data-covid-19-vaccin #obgyn #womenshealth #pregnancy #obstetrics #gynaecology #doctor #gynaecologist #obstetrician #health #medicine #midwife #surgery #pregnant #ultrasound #medical #healthcare #women #fertility

16.01.2022 Consuming a wide variety of nutritious foods during pregnancy is important to ensure that the nutritional requirements of both mother and baby are met. The basic principles of healthy eating remain the same during pregnancy, though requirements for some nutrients (e.g. iron, folic acid) may increase. https://www.arragejenkins.com.au/special-food-consideration #obgyn #womenshealth #pregnancy #obstetrics #gynaecology #doctor #gynaecologist #obstetrician #health #medicine #midwife #surgery #pregnant #ultrasound #medical #healthcare #women #fertility

13.01.2022 Myth: Pregnant women need to eat twice as much. Dr Greg Jenkins: Eating for two is an adage that should really be thrown out the window. Overeating during pregnancy and excessive weight gain can be harmful to both the mother and the baby. If an expecting mother is eating a healthy, balanced diet then generally she won’t need any additional calories during the first and second trimester. When it comes to the third trimester, she will generally only need around 200 calories e...xtra per day. Assessment of ideal weight gain in pregnancy is best based on a woman's pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI, a measure of height in relation to weight). In general, leaner women are advised to gain more pregnancy related weight, and heavier women are advised to gain less. Routine weighing of pregnant women at each visit has not been shown to be of benefit in relation to pregnancy outcomes and is therefore not a necessary part of your pregnancy care. We are happy to record your weight at each visit if you wish and provide advice on ideal target BMI weight gain if desired. #obgyn #womenshealth #pregnancy #obstetrics #gynaecology #doctor #gynaecologist #obstetrician #health #medicine #midwife #surgery #pregnant #ultrasound #medical #healthcare #women #fertility

10.01.2022 Fetal Movements (FM) Movements vary greatly from pregnancy to pregnancy. In a first pregnancy, FM will often be first noticed between 18 and 22 weeks. In general, FM are usually felt earlier in second and subsequent pregnancies compared with first. From approximately 26 weeks, you should notice your baby move every day. If you do not feel any movements on a given day or if you feel that the FM are less than usual, sit down somewhere quiet for 20 minutes so that you can notice... your baby moving. You will probably feel the baby move during this time. If you do not, or if the FM continue to feel reduced, you should contact the Birth Unit at your hospital and speak to a midwife who will advise you to attend the hospital to have the baby's wellbeing assessed. There will usually be no cause for concern, but very occasionally it can indicate that there is something important happening that we need to know about. It is something which should always be checked and should never be left till tomorrow. #obgyn #womenshealth #pregnancy #obstetrics #gynaecology #doctor #gynaecologist #obstetrician #health #medicine #midwife #surgery #pregnant #ultrasound #medical #healthcare #women #fertility
