24.01.2022 Some pregnancies must be delivered by caesarean section and are planned in advance. Sometimes they are emergency procedures. They are almost all lower segment operations. These involve a horizontal incision above the bikini line and a horizontal incision in the uterus. Most operations are completely straightforward. Some cases are potentially more complex due to; Obstructed labour. High-grade placenta praevia. Morbidly adherent placenta (placenta accreta).... Fibroid uterus. All operations have risks and these need to be discussed in advance. The risks are different in individual patients and we need to discuss these thoroughly either antenatally or in the labour ward. Dr Steven cares greatly about making sure his patients have all the information and understand it. The most important thing is the health and safety of the mother and baby. A good delivery is one where both mother and baby are well. Failure of ovulation Male factor (semen abnormalities) Tubal disease (blocked fallopian tubes) Failure of ovulation causes is also identified for a positive response to ovulation induction with Clomid (70%). Unexplained Infertility - When no problem can be identified with any of these tests, couples would be referred for assisted fertility care. 18.01.2022 Twin Pregnancy Having twins can be exciting and daunting at the same time. A twin pregnancy requires closer supervision as they can present more issues than a singleton pregnancy. Twins are usually non-identical - approx 1-2% of pregnancies and identical even more rare - approx 0.1%. Non Identical twins (Dizygotic)... Dizygotic twins result from the fertilization of two separate eggs by two separate sperm. The babies are different genetically and are both independent with their own separate placentas (Diamniotic Dichorionic). Identical twins (Monozygotic) Monozygotic twins occur when one fertilized egg splits into two separate zygotes. Each one is genetically the same. In normal twin gestations, it is common to have a normal vaginal delivery. If the pregnancy is complicated then it may be likely that the delivery will be by caesarean section depending on the nature of the risk. Some risks include intrauterine growth restriction, premature labour and malpresentation. Dr Steven is experienced ith high risk and multiple pregnancy, he will monitor the pregnancy closely and keep you informed at every step. 12.01.2022 Dr Steven offers VBAC delivery and works with mothers for the best possible birth outcome. Successful vaginal delivery after a c-section can depend on certain factors. Some factors taken into consideration for VBACs include previous complex obstetric history. If any risk factors present too high a VBAC delivery may not be possible. The risks and benefits will be discussed in every case. Approximately 30% of all pregnancies will end in a caesarean section. Some of these will be planned caesarean sections and some will be emergencies. The safety of the mother and baby are the most important factors of all. A successful VBAC is a wonderful outcome but the most important outcome is a safe delivery whether by VBAC or C-section. https://www.drstevenhatzikostas.com.au/obstetrics/vbac/

05.01.2022 Folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9 and is an essential nutrient especially in the early stages of pregnancy. It plays a very important role in DNA formation and cell growth of developing babies. It is scientifically proven to help prevent birth defects. Vitamin B9 is found naturally in foods and is called folate. Dark leafy greens are excellent for natural folate. It is recommended to start taking folic acid vitamins at least one month prior to conception if possible, otherwise, start taking folic acid as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test. 04.01.2022 Dizziness in early pregnancy can be a common occurrence after all your body is creating an entire human being. Many reasons can cause fainting and feeling dizzy such as; - Your body is not producing enough blood to fill a fast-expanding circulatory system. - High levels of progesterone make blood vessels relax and widen which increase the blood flow to your baby but slows it down for you. Which reduces your blood pressure. - Extra body heat being generated which can make a s...tuffy, hot room feel unbearable. - If your blood sugar drops or you become dehydrated, you're more likely to experience a dizzy spell. How to help avoid dizziness throughout your pregnancy; - Avoid long periods of standing. - Don’t get up in a hurry after a long period of sitting or lying down. - Sit down as soon as you start to feel lightheaded. - Keep blood sugar levels steady by eating smaller frequent meals with protein in each meal. -Keep hydrated with plenty of water as dehydration contributes to lightheadedness. - Avoid lying flat on your back late in pregnancy.
