25.01.2022 Loved to crack a @DomainedelaSoufrandière "Bret Brothers" 2016 magnum. If you're wondering why you may not have heard much about Pouilly-Vinzelles, consider this - while the neighbouring Pouilly-Fuissé has 750-hectares under vine, the tiny Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC has a meagre 50-hectares! This is why we see so little of it and why there is so little noise around it. Nonetheless it is a wonderful terroir. The rocky slopes and cooler microclimate here result in wines with more st...ructural definition than you typically find in the wines of Fuissé. But we are generalising as always. Here we have a wine that is grown in one of the Mâcon's very best sites, Les Quarts is sectioned up into four lieux-dits (or historic place names): Haut, Bas, Clocheton and Les Quarts Touches. Although it varies, in 2016, this cuvée mostly comes from the younger vines of the Clocheton parcel. It was picked on 28th and 29th August, was vinified in both steel tank (70%) and the balance in old barrels. The Domaine uses only used oak by the way, with an average age of 10-12 years. As well as ex-Laflaive and Lafon barrels, they are also buying used 300-litre casks from Olivier Lamy. This is a pretty, juicy, tangy, again beautifully fresh white Burg, with vivid purity of jasmine, apple and nectarine fruit and some subtle spice as well. There's a fabulous, mouth-watering balance between texture and tension, and the finish is crystalline and super refreshing. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, @chrisringland had a passion for wine from a very young age, cultivating neighbour’s vines to make his first wines. After a few years working as a cellar hand locally, Chris travelled to South Australia where he studied oenology at the famed Roseworthy campus. On completion of his studies, Chris returned to New Zealand where... he finished his citation on wine phenolics and protein fining agents. . . After periods of working in California and Europe, Chris found his way back to South Australia and in the late eighties took a position with Robert O’Callaghan at Rockford wines in the Barossa. It was here Chris developed his unique style and produced his now world famous Shiraz, under his own name. (Formerly Three Rivers Shiraz). After 15 years at Rockford, Chris travelled back to Europe and developed a number of projects with local producers in Spain. . . 03.01.2022 Kooyong's Estate Pinot noir comes from a combination of blocks from the Meres, Haven and Ferrous vineayrds, in Mornington Peninsula. The wine gives a broader overview of the Kooyong winemaking philosophy: to best preserve the inherent characteristics present in the fruit while making wines of elegance, finesse, texture, complexity and structure. . . @kooyongwines Estate Pinot Noir comprises fruit from a combination of blocks within our Meres, Haven and Ferrous vineyards. It o...ffers a broader taste of the Kooyong vineyard, with parcels from various soils and mesoclimates blended together to create the Estate label. Year after year the same blocks are consistently chosen, giving this wine an underlying similarity across vintages. The fruit was fermented in a combination of large-format oak foudre, large-format concrete tanks and stainless steel tanks. Fermentation commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts, included a proportion of whole bunches and lasted 18 to 21 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (20% new) and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was nine months in barriques, followed by a further six months in large format French oak foudres.
