23.01.2022 I am pleased to share my latest Book Chapter: Franco, I (2020). Forging Sustainable Livelihoods in Resource Regions: A Tale of Three Continents. In Kapfudzaruwa et al (Eds). Rural-Urban Linkages and Sustainable Development: Case Studies from Africa. #SDG 12 Sustainable Consumption and Production #Impact: #Australia (Asia-Pacific); #Zambia, (#Africa); #Colombia (Latin America)... I argue that mining development offers both strong advantages and powerful difficulties to local communities in resource regions, particularly those adjacent to mining operations. Locals are often highly dependent on mining for employment and economic development but this dependence comes with inevitable economic, social, environmental vulnerabilities and loss of livelihood options. This chapter explores these issues in the context of three mining locations Zambia, (Africa); Colombia (Latin America) and Australia (Asia-Pacific). Funded by the African Development Bank and the Ministry of Finance of Japan, the manuscript is the result of a collaborative effort with colleagues at the United Nations University and the University of Tokyo. 15.01.2022 Building a better world: productivity and efficiency for practitioners I had the opportunity to participate in the lecture ‘Building a better world: productivity and efficiency for practitioners’. The lecture took place at the Custom House in Brisbane and was organised by our team from the Australian Institute for Business and Economics at The University of Queensland. The goal of the lecture was to give a brief introduction to the field of productivity and efficiency analys...is the content aimed towards practitioners from the Queensland Treasury Corporation, industry and government agencies. This event was framed by an introduction from world-leading economist and featured a keynote lectures by internationally renowned economic researchers who agreed that economics encompasses the decisions made by every person, firm and nation in the world. The goal of the lecture was to give a brief introduction to the field of productivity and efficiency analysis the content was aimed towards practitioners in industry and government agencies. Issues concerning climate change #SDG13 and linkages to productivity in the context to sustainability were also discussed.
