16.01.2022 Following a car infront of you these days, is not something people think much of when it comes to safety. When a learner driver is asked what is the minimum saf...e following distance, the typical answer is 1 or 2 car lengths. This may be good a very slow speeds, but when traveling at 100km's/h, this distance is too dangerous. A safe following distance is not calculated in distance, but rather in time. A safe following distance in QLD is a minimum of 2 seconds in great conditions. This is to account for your reaction time (the time is takes to see the hazard infront, release the accelerator, and start applying the brake), and also the time it takes the vehicle to slow down or possibly stop in time. When conditions start to get worse, the following distance can go to 3, 4, or even 5 seconds or more depending on the conditions. Driving a loan car this weekend, I noticed that it had a display for following distance, to help show drivers what a safe following distance is.
