22.01.2022 MSM are disproportionately represented among HIV infections. Fortunately the rate of HIV infections is falling while the rate of other STIs is rising. Dr Jasper talks about STIs among MSM - both how to avoid them and how to treat them.

21.01.2022 MSM - What is it? As you know, I have a special interest in MSM. But what is it? I use the same definition as Wikipedia - MSM Men who have sex with men, also known as males who have sex with males, are men who engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex, regardless of how they identify themselves; many such men do not sexually identify as gay, homosexual or bisexual. The term MSM was created in the 1990s by epidemiologists to study the spread of disease among ...men who have sex with men, regardless of identity. It is often used in medical literature and social research to describe such men as a group for research studies without considering issues of self-identification. It does not describe any specific sexual activity, and which activities are covered by the term depends on context. In my professional experience, there is a significant proportion of MSM who don't regard themselves as gay, homosexual or bisexual. Several my patients are men who would describe themselves as straight or in a heterosexual relationship but have been or are sexually active with other men. MSM does not relate to men in any single, social identity. My main interest is in providing quality healthcare services to MSM patients regardless of how they may label their sexual orientation - or indeed if they do so at all! However, one of the key challenges is that many men do not openly disclose if they are MSM. In a recent study in the UK, 75% of male patients who said that their GP did not know that they had sex with men was because the GP "did not ask"! I ask so I can provide effective healthcare for all my MSM patients. #MSM #ccmcperthgp

This results in many of my patients being hesitant in openly sharing information making the provision of effective healthcare, guidance and advice somewhat challenging. Fortunately, in Australia MSM have ready access to quality healthcare.
