25.01.2022 Me. I had Perinatal Anxiety and didn't realise it until the proverbial hit the fan, and C was already over a year old. Anyone else suffer through Perinatal Anxiety and Depression? How about your spouse? Please share your stories - others need to know they are not alone, and it's ok to ask for help. X

23.01.2022 Infertility is estimated to effect about 15% of Australian couples, with about half of those problems being attributed to the female reproductive system. While medicine can manage a fair few of the causes of infertility, there is a subset of this population who will never be able to carry a pregnancy for a variety of reasons, such as having been born without a uterus, or it being too dangerous for the mother or baby (such as after some cancer treatments). For a very small per...centage of this population, surrogacy is the only option for having a baby. Altruisitic surrogacy in Australia (and in WA) is a legal, but a complicated process, and can be either traditional (surrogate’s egg) or gestational (not genetically related to the surrogate). Sadly, same-sex male couples and single men do not currently qualify in WA, though this is in the process of being changed to reflect other Australian states. The most difficult part of this journey is finding a compatible team to create new families. I thought I would share this resource in case any of you know of someone who may be looking for a surrogate. Chances are good that they may not have made you aware of it, so please share it. SASS is a professional service designed to support both surrogates and intended parents in forming well-suited teams, in addition to providing counselling, mentoring and expenses management support. https://www.surrogacyaustralia.org/register/

22.01.2022 Sometimes motherhood makes me feel like a fraud. Aren’t mothers meant to be patient and calm? Shouldn’t it have made me wiser and stronger and braver? The truth... is, I don’t feel wiser. I used to devour literature and watch history documentaries. Now I crawl into bed exhausted and watched reruns of problematic 90’s sitcoms. I don’t feel stronger. I used to be fearless. Now my heart feels palpably close to the surface. My mind racing to the worst-case scenario. As I film a cute moment a fleeting thought crosses my mind. What if it’s the last one. I don’t feel calmer. Anger can bubble up inside of me out of nowhere. A simple request to meet a basic need asked one too many times. A sudden spill and its not just water on the floor, as words and emotions tumble out of me. I don’t feel more patient. I used to work long days, and into the night on a single task, my attention sharply focused. Now my mind is all over the place. I’m reading a picture book, my thoughts drifting to tomorrow’s errands, losing track of my place on the page. Suddenly overcome with an urgent need to complete a task and as I say just a minute for the hundredth time that day, I realise the task wasn’t at all urgent. But my need to peel myself away was. I don’t feel brave. I fear judgement. I fear chaos. I have a general feeling of unease about things outside my control. I could lose everything at any moment. But if I feel that way, why aren’t I more patient and calmer? Why don’t I have the strength or wisdom to savour this moment? We celebrate the glorious parts of motherhood. But maybe we should also be celebrating the deeply profound parts of motherhood that break us down. Our moments of weakness aren’t shameful. They are acknowledging the fragility of what it is to be human. And they allow us to rebuild ourselves.

20.01.2022 Yay! Prenatal yoga in the Hills, what a fabulous resource this is going to be for my local Mummas!!

19.01.2022 Did you know... a stand alone birth centre is coming to Perth?! The stand-alone centre will operate independently, and is about building bridges amongst health workers so they come together to work for women! SO exciting, the first one will hopefully be in Guildford! Is this a dream you want to support? They are looking for investors for set-ups after which is should be a self-sustaining non-profit business :)

18.01.2022 Update number 2! I'm so happy to have published my first peer-reviewed paper, and on a topic I am so passionate about! I came out earlier this week and, to my knowledge, is the first chiropractic paper to be accepted by this publication. Chiropractic has been around a LONG time (125 years), and we've been adjusting babies since the beginning (with an enviable safety record, I might add). Unfortunately, there is limited published evidence about how effective it can be for co...nditions like breastfeeding. Not because it isn't effective, but because chiropractors are notoriously bad at publishing papers! Case studies are the first step, and I'm so pleased to have contributed to a body of evidence that needs to grow! Abstract is here - should you wish to have a full copy, please let me know and I will forward you one!

18.01.2022 Big announcements 1: I'm seeing patients again! Woohoo! We've changed some things to help keep everyone safe during this crazy time. I've also dropped my fees - financially, this time is going to be hitting most of us, and I don't want cost to be the reason patients can't get the care they need! I'm ALSO now seeing other family members - this decision has been made at the request of patient families who would prefer to all come in at the same time. ... Another big announcement to come today, stay tuned!

17.01.2022 Emotionally, it can be difficult for us to realise that politics play a big part in our health. These political relationships generally revolve around money - they rarely revolve around your health. The following graph was published in Australian GP Magazine (online) today. You'll note that these are all donations made to political parties by various Australian companies, mostly pharmaceutical (and the bottom one is a tobacco company). Remember that these COMPANIES do not exi...st for your health. They exist to make money for their shareholders. These types of relationships are exactly why non-biased research evidence is so important in driving health policies... otherwise it's driven by financial decisions, not on what is actually in the interest of your health. What do you think about this graph?

14.01.2022 Hypnobirthing was hands down the best decisions I made when preparing for childbirth. And we have this fabulous resource in the Hills! And at a fabulous cafe, no less!

13.01.2022 I realize the irony of having to educate yourself about something that is so innate and instinctual. But the reason why we need to do this is that birth has bec...ome SO FAR removed from the instinctual behaviour it used to be. There’s been years upon years of attempting to control the uncontrollable. Predict the unpredictable. Make the non linear linear. To fit birth into a neat little box when it. Just. Isn’t. Possible. There’s been years of telling women that the pain of childbirth is more than anyone could or should bear. Years of turning a spiritual and emotional event into a purely mechanical, physical process. Birth is so much more than just a physical process, if you let it be. You don’t need to educate yourself on how to birth. But rather you need to strip away years of conditioning under a patriarchal society. You need to learn how to speak up and think for yourself again. How to navigate the system of bullshit that we now find ourselves in. How to let go of guilt or discomfort when you go against the wants or recommendations of another person, because their want doesn’t match your own. You KNOW how to birth. But you might not know all the other shit.

13.01.2022 Oh, the number of times that this is a big problem in patients that I see! I don't mean that as a dig - raising kids is HARD. And it's so easy to pop them in front of the screen so you can get something done (work, housework, a cup of tea or a chat with a friend), particularly over school holidays (or when they're in a wheelchair and plaster from a broken leg). But there are consequences!

11.01.2022 I was just having this conversation the other day. Women are not better at multitasking - multitasking is incredibly taxing on the brain and a really inefficient way of getting things done, regardless of gender. Women just do it more... because we have no choice.

11.01.2022 Dear friends, family and patients Two months ago, Jon and I separated. While we are still living together as we don’t want Chloe to have two separate homes, it has obviously been a challenging time for us all. (Is there an emoji for understatements?!) Why am I posting this on Facebook? Because we live in a world where the perfectness of our lives as demonstrated on social media is considered a factor contributing to social isolation, depression and anxiety. I’m posting th...is for the parents I see every day who may not feel like it’s ok to not be doing ok. It's OK to ask for support. You are not alone. You have support in me. It’s ok to not be doing ok. It's ok to be vulnerable. You will get through this. Please reach out, I know it’s hard. If you have any stories, particularly about parenthood, that you would like to share to help others see the reality of raising children (as equally beautiful as it also is), or the challenges of relationships, I would love to hear them. And, with your permission, I would love to share them with the families I work with, so we can all start to understand once again that raising children takes a village of support, that we must do a better job of creating that village, and that we are not alone. Xx

10.01.2022 Back to work today! Thanks for the warm messages, I have recovered from my sore throat and Chloé has recovered from her runny nose. Some big updates coming later today, stay tuned!

08.01.2022 "Is this a time to be safe? Or is this a time to be brave?" "What can you do that is braver than last time?" Of all the things I wish for my daughter, bravery is high up on the list! It's so hard to realise that I'm not doing any favours by protecting her... she needs to learn that she is incredible and capable of doing all that on her own! (And that I'm there to cheer her on and support her through it). ... https://www.heysigmund.com/anxiety-in-children-and-teens-/

07.01.2022 Let’s talk a bit about Breastfeeding Difficulty. At birth, 90% of mothers are exclusively breastfeeding their child. This is a great number to see, as we all un...derstand the benefits of breastfeeding. The thing is though, not everything goes to plan. By the time 4 months have gone past, only about 45% are continuing to exclusively breastfeed. This reduces to nearly 15% by the time your child is 6 months old. So what has happened? Well in 2013, a research team from the USA looked at the common reasons for premature cessation of breastfeeding and found difficulty with latch and sucking to be one of the most common reasons given. But what can cause difficulty with latch and suck? In a paper published in Breastfeeding Review the Journal of the Australian Breastfeeding Association Drs Christian Fludder (Chiropractor) and Jenelle Bourgeois (Chiropractor) stated one factor gaining support as a possible contributor to difficulty with latching and/or sucking is disruption to normal biomechanical function of the cervical spine. Now we do need to clarify that this paper is only a single case study, and even the authors acknowledged this as a limitation, but thankfully researchers have been active in this field. A 2018 review of manual therapy and breastfeeding difficulty was able to conclude there was a moderate level of favourable evidence supporting manual therapy for infants with musculoskeletal dysfunction and suboptimal breastfeeding. Further on this, a 2019 survey-based observational study found a statistically significant and clinically favourable outcome from manual intervention. So there certainly is evidence that manual therapy may be able to aid those with musculoskeletal dysfunction and breastfeeding difficulty. In fact, it may be this evidence that helps parents make their decision to see a chiropractor in the first place; a public survey of more than 21,000 parents showed than 99.7% had a positive experience with the care of their children, and 98% indicating that their child improved after treatment! So could there be a reason for your child’s breastfeeding difficulty? #breastfeeding #feeding #infants #babies #developing #research #chirochildhealth #rosanna #helping #baby #children #child #infants #themoreyouknow #chiropractor #chiropractic #manualtherapy #evidencebased Pinky McKay

05.01.2022 Did you know, you can get your Vitamin D levels tested from home? I can order it for you online, it's a blood spot test (you prick your finger and drop some blood on a card), then pop it in the mail and send it in. $100 :) Or just make sure you're getting plenty of sun. Covering up high-exposed areas like the face, shoulders and top of the chest is probably important, with clothing/a hat or some non-toxic sunscreen. But otherwise, try and keep at leat 50% of your skin exposed for at least 20 minutes this time of year :) https://neurosciencenews.com/coronavirus-vitamin-d-16098/

05.01.2022 Most brain growth occurs before age two! It’s why little ones need so much sleep. Be mindful of this during the silly season and everyone will have a more peaceful holiday. The first Christmas was simple, maybe this one can be as well... Merry Christmas!

03.01.2022 Because... it's true

03.01.2022 It's not often we get to participate in global research! And this is such a simple one, 15 minute survey every month if you are breastfeeding a baby under 7 months old! Let's spread it around the world! The Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group is an exceptional organisation a resource to breastfeeding parents... let's get them the numbers they need! ... Research like THIS is important in informing politicians around the world when it comes to supporting mothers during pandemics like this one. Please share (And thanks for putting up with all my exclamation marks! )
