25.01.2022 I hope you all have a safe and merry June long weekend everyone! From now until next Tuesday I’ll be completely unplugged with absolutely no phone or internet so that I can spend some much needed time with my family without being distracted by work/study. It’s also baby Maggie’s first birthday tomorrow (gosh that went fast!) so I’ll be enjoying plenty of cake too Needing a doctor? I’m back working next Tuesday for nursing homes and Wednesday for clinic consulting, so you... can reach me then via the appropriate channels. For any urgent medical issues there is the Healthdirect phone line, Wollongong Radio Doctor and we also have one of our wonderful doctors covering the clinic each morning over the long weekend. Be kind to each other xx Dr Jess

24.01.2022 Unfortunately too many will be turned away from our emergency departments when they may need care, compassion, and critical life saving treatment the most. Please take part in this research if you can!

22.01.2022 HELPING LITTLE ONES ADJUST TO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS Next Sunday 7th October marks the start of daylight savings (EST). Whilst this means the beginning of longer days..., later nights and warm weather, the downside for a lot of parents is the change in times can interfere with their baby's body clocks, adding an extra challenge for sleep times. Some babies can cope with the change and take it in their stride, however others can’t cope with the abrupt change. For those babies that struggle with daylight savings, there are some things parents can do to help them adjust. Firstly, start now! For those babies that struggle, the key is to make the change gradually. Start the process around five days before daylight savings and change your baby’s routine in 15 minute increments each day. This means waking your child, serving meals, and putting them to bed 15 minutes earlier than the day before. Once it comes time for the clocks to change, you have already begun the progressive move, so the change doesn’t last or feel so hard for so long. Keep in mind for these five days it can also mean an earlier start to the day for you. For example if your baby usually goes down to bed at around 7am... Day 1: Keep same usual pattern for sleep and feed times. Day 2: Sleep and feed times 15 minutes earlier than yesterday. So rather than the first feed of the day at 7am, give your baby a feed at 6:45am and bedtime is brought forward to 6:45pm. Day 3: Sleep and feed times 30 minutes earlier, so the first feed of the day should start at 6:30am and bedtime would be at 6:30pm. Continue this process until Day 5 when 6am becomes the time for the first feed. This is the day the clocks have changed so your child will now wake at 7am (daylight savings time) and will be back on their usual routine. Bedtime will be 7pm (daylight savings time). It is still really important to stick with your usual wind down bedtime routine, like a bath, story, and cuddles. Children love the sense of predictability and it will give them the powerful signal that it is bedtime. Be patient and sympathetic. It will generally take about a week after daylight savings for your child to adjust to their new sleep pattern. During this time you may find that they may be a little more clingy or tired. Often adults can feel the same during this time, so make sure you are also getting the rest you need. If you need assistance with your child’s sleep routine, please contact the Illawarra Early Parenting Centre on 02 4255 5000 or visit www.figtreeprivate.com.au

17.01.2022 Isolation is not always fun for everyone. Domestic violence, child and elder abuse is shown to worsen during times of home isolation such as the current situation from covid-19. Women, children, and persons with a disability are most at risk. Please, please, please... if you feel unsafe, or have had problems with anger yourself, or if you would just like someone to talk to - your friendly GP will be able to help. Give us a call (or send me a private message) and we will arra...nge a phone or video consultation at a time that is safe for you. If in need of urgent assistance or counselling, please phone 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) for 24 hours assistance or pop over to their website for 24 hour online chat help. https://www.1800respect.org.au/

11.01.2022 This week’s new batch of what I call Owchie Owls... my version of the traditional Red Cross Trauma Teddies. If you’ve never heard of trauma teddies - check out the link below. The traditional teddies are usually knitted by community volunteers and lovingly delivered to health care providers in hospitals, ambulances, General practices etc for us to pass on to our paediatric patients. Since completing my RACGP Fellowship as a Specialist GP as well as my International Post G...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Myth-busted. We’ve know for years that white tailed spiders do NOT cause flesh eating ulcers, let's get the word out to everyone. The only spiders we worry abou...t at the NSW Poisons Information Centre are funnel-web and redback spiders, and even then, redbacks are not life threatening. All spider bites should be monitored for signs of infection and followed up with the GP if these symptoms develop. See more

09.01.2022 "Dr Jess, where have you been?!!" ****************************************************************** It's been a pretty crazy year for all of us and I've definitely been quiet on social media, so I thought I'd update my supporters here on what I've been upto over the past 18months: ... - Giving birth/breast-feeding/raising a baby - Caring and advocating for our older special-needs child - Returned back to work with the youngest was 12 weeks old (coming to work is so much easier than parenting! phew!) - Covid. Enough said. - Working as a Specialist GP in the Berkeley IMS clinic - Working as an Aged Care GP in local nursing homes - Providing private medical consultancy work e.g. for Brittish Medical Journal, Public Health, Advisory Committees, writing pandemic management guidelines and policies etc. - Running a buisiness as a sole-trader / drowning in paperwork - Pursuing GP practice innovation e.g. electronic prescribing and referrals, telehealth, MyHealthRecord and continuing my own medical education, research and professional development. - Practising some self-care and preventing burn-out which unfortunately is far too common in doctors (GPs particularly). So whilst many patients have been asking "why are you so hard to get in to see?" "When are you coming back to work full time etc?", please let me assure you - I am working full time... and then some. But I absolutely love working as a GP and wouldn't give it up for the world - I just wish there were more hours in the day and possibly that I could clone another one or two of myself to get everything done! Thankyou all for your patience, this has been an extraordinary year and I'm sure we'll get through it all together with some kindness, hand-hygiene and social distancing! - Dr Jess

07.01.2022 This Telehealth thing has been a blast! It’s been an honour to be able to consult with you all via phone/video in your own homes and get a glimpse of your daily family life! It certainly will be interesting to see how the way we conduct GP consults may change forever. As we continue on this new covid-induced Telehealth journey together, I invite your feedback and suggestions about what you thing is working well with phone and video consults, and how you think we could improve it. With love (and my dogs yapping in the background as I consult from home too!), Dr Jess

07.01.2022 Hi Everyone! I just wanted to let you all know where I've moved to now that I've finished all of my GP and child health speciality training and moved back north to my home town of the Illawarra. To my south coast patients, I hope you are all doing well and thankyou for your patience and understanding during the transition period, I'm sure my colleagues in Nowra are taking great care of you! I'm now located at the IMS (Illawarra Medical Services) in Berkeley. This clinic has ...a special place in my heart as I spent 12 months towards the end of my medical school years learning about General Practice there, and it is what convinced me that GP was for me... and I'm so glad it is the path that I've followed! I'm there 4 days per week 9am-5pm (Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fridays) and its a fully bulk-billed clinic with on-site pathology, practice nurses, physio, dietician, psychologist and Skin Cancer medicine GPs. I'm loving being back where it all began and working with such a wonderful team of clinicians. If you or anyone you know are in need of a caring GP, come in and seem myself of one of the other amazing docs at IMS. Details and online booking link below. Take care! - Dr Jess http://www.imsberkeley.com.au/
