25.01.2022 I’ve been working on a new article about TikTok, which lately is in the news everyday- and not for any good reasons. Yet for children it’s still business as usual and they are on there everyday. The article helps parents to understand the issues and whether it’s ok or not for our kids to be using this platform now or ever. #parenting #digitalwellbeing #digitalbalance #covidparenting #techclever #parenting101 TikTok
24.01.2022 If you’ve been scouring websites looking for the best weekend away spot then be careful of the reviews you believe. Latest research from University of Illinois shows that 20-40% of travel reviews are fake. This even surprised me. If you think about it, reviews make and break the travel industry. Because of this a whole "review farm" industry has sprung up. Businesses can pay to have to have glowing recommendations posted about their venue. You need only type "buy reviews" int...o Google and you’ll see what I mean. I’ve been doing lots of research about misinformation online. Travel sites are full of it. There are always strategies to use to help separate fake from real. Tip 1: Studies by a team at Cornell University found that truthful reviews use words specific to a hotel experience, like "price" and "check-in." Fake ones use more generic words like "vacation," "family" and "experience" accompanied by a lot of commas and exclamation marks. Fake reviews are also likely to include more superfluous scene-setting, as in, "My boyfriend surprised me with a romantic weekend away ..." Online content is constantly evolving and learning new digital skills ourselves & teaching them to our kids is a must. I’ve put more tips for spotting fake travel reviews on my website https://www.joanneorlando.com.au/articles #Scams #onlinesafety #digitalliteracy #parenting101 #techclever #weekendaway #holidaytime #postlockdown
24.01.2022 So excited to have a massive 2021 coming up. Two new exciting partnerships, a new book, new TechClever courses, and a new role. Can’t wait. So now very happy to be chilling out with my family wondering the vineyards before the whirlwind of work starts. NSW north coast is so beautiful!
21.01.2022 We often think of technology as something that children should use, but also something to protect them from. Technology access as a right for every child changes how we think about the role of technology in children’s lives. Part of the reason for this decision by the UN is that technology is such an important part of our world that being able to use it is an essential skill. If a child is denied this skill they will likely not have the same opportunity for learning, and gett...ing a job. What are your thoughts? 21.01.2022 This video is spot on! If Facebook take real news from their site then we know the information we get from there is opinion instead of fact. With so much misinformation online its always best to go to real news sites to get your information. #Facebooknewsban #digitalliteracy... #techclever https://twitter.com/markhumphri/status/1362131687031771138

20.01.2022 We’ve expected a lot from children during Covid and they’ve done really well, we should be really proud of our kids. We’ve expected them to use their technology skills to shift straight into: online learning to stay in touch with friends to keep themselves entertained to stay emotionally healthy using technology.... This makes us think how should we guide them in their technology use now? We have a better idea of what work and school will look like in the future and we need to make sure they can use technology well to be able to succeed in both. #parenting101 #digitalliteracy #digitalwellness #digitalbalance #experttips #covidparenting
18.01.2022 If your kids watch the same videos over & over, or read the same book or have you tell them the same story again & again here’s why. It’s because they want to tap into how they know it will make them feel. If they are worried or angry they will use it to make them feel calm & better. Or they want to relive the happiness or awe that they felt the first time the viewed it. We do the same as adults- it might be the same song, movie or even a meal that makes up feel comforte...d because of the memories it brings back. That’s why quality videos are important- especially if they are going to be watched many many times. #parenting #digitalliteracy #techclever #mums #kidsonholiday #schoolholidays
17.01.2022 I worked with The Morning Show on a special investigation into confidence fraud. These are often romance scams - which since Covid have gone through the roof. I personally have been approached by scammers on social media many times, the most recent told me he was a CEO of a big mining company in USA. Platforms like "Words with Friends" have also become a hotspot for such scammers. It can happen on any platform where people connect and no one is exempt from a scammer first ap...proaching them. These scammers groom us over weeks & months to gain our confidence and then hit us for the sting (often cash or expensive giftcards). The Channel 7 investigation included myself, Angela Cox, and a detective (who recently charged a 20-something yr old women who had profited 9.7 million from romance scams). Really informative, up to date segment. The full segment link is in my bio. #digital #technology #speaker #cybersafety #onlinesafety #digitalwellbeing #digitalliteracy
16.01.2022 If your child uses technology regularly then this article I wrote for for raisingchildren.net.au gives tips on helping to ensure that they have healthy approaches to screens. There are many types of technology use and we want to make sure we direct children to the good ones. #screentime #techclever #digitalwellbeing #parenting #children
16.01.2022 Which of the statements below do you say to your child when they are using technology? "It’s time to get off" "You’ve got 15 minutes on technology and that’s all!"... "Can I play that game with you? Can you show me how to play?" "I told you to get off your device!" "Wow, that looks great" (referring to something they made online). "What app are you playing? Is it good?" "Give me your phone, I want to check what you are doing on there!" If your talk about technology is always negative and how bad technology is for them, what impact do you think this will have on them? It creates a negative home-technology environment and will make your child reluctant to come to you if something goes wrong online. Tip: Aim to create balance in what you talk about and how you talk about technology with your child.
15.01.2022 The footage from the DC riots is raw, aggressive & everywhere. Where do children learn to deconstruct it. Not only what is happening but how it plays out online and how it affects them now and long term. On top of that is all the other online content that a young person engages with online that is often highly loaded. That's what the TechClever Programs I've developed for schools do. The programs focus on helping students understand their actions with technology within the co...ntext of our complex online world. Through an evidenced-based step by step process they understand how and why they behave the ways they do with technology. They identify the red flags for themselves in their own actions. Where the stress is occurring for them. Understanding leads to control and from this point their actions change. The process guides them to change that is empowering, positive and balanced. As we know telling children how to change has limited success if they do not own the change. 14.01.2022 Trump wants to ban TikTok from USA because it is collecting data about its users, including kids. How much data is actually collected from children if they have an account on social media? Is it enough to be worried about? Yes! Can it negatively affect our kids? ... Yes! Ad-tech companies hold 72 million data points on a child by the time they turn 13. That's huge! Who are ad-tech companies? Google, TikTok, Snapchat, Microsoft, Facebook and any site your child uses that also have advertising. This information collected from our kids is used to target them for advertisements. Every time they go online they will see ads made just for them that use this information. It's like watching TV and being inundated with so many ads, selected just for you, that know how to reach your weak spot. and it will happen every time they sue these sites. It puts our kids under unfair marketing pressure to buy, buy, buy. It undermines their privacy. It happens from when they are young and will continue to happen everyday they use the internet. The UK are trying to make moves to stop the unlawfully mining data from five million under-13s in the UK. It's something that should happen in every country. #socialmedia #tiktokban #cybersafety #parenting110
13.01.2022 I love this quote. Much of our use of technology has little to do with the technology itself and more to do with us. If we feel socially uncomfortable then out comes our phone as our social lifesaver. Our culture also tells us that we need to be busy and have lots of friends around us always. This adds to the need to look to our device to keep us company. Healthy technology use is about being aware of this. #digitalwellness #digitalliteracy #technologynews #onlinelife #techclever #digitalwellness
12.01.2022 I love this quote by a teen I was interviewing. It hits home to what we as parents do. We have been convinced that our kids turn bad once they use technology & we feel the need to spy on them online. Kids know this and when they talk to me about it they say things like ‘I can’t understand why my mum doesn’t trust me, I’m a good kid’, or ‘Why don’t my parents ask me instead of sneaking behind my back’. For children it begins a journey of not talking about your technology use openly with parents because you have already been judged. It’s important to think about exactly why don’t trust your child online and whether it’s warranted. #digitalparenting #parenting101 #digitalwellness #cybersafety #onlinesafety #parentingtips

11.01.2022 How we use social media determines its impact on us. Around 1/2 million Aussie children use TikTok. We often think the only alternative to guiding them is to either ban them or let them use it. Anyone whose ever been a teenager will know that banning never works. For anyone who is a parent or teacher you'll know that guiding children is never that easy. Guiding children in meaningful & safe use of the app is another option. There are some uses of TikTok that are creative and ...meaningful and can have a positive effect and some that don't. Helping children to differentiate between these is what digital literacy is all about. 10.01.2022 I was talking to a principal last week who said it was time to stop focusing on fear and telling his students what they should not do with technology. He said, "My students have stopped listening". He decided more balanced messages about technology was now needed. Join me in my webinar for insights into how schools can provide balanced messages about technology that meaningfully guide students' healthy technology use. - I will explain my research that shows why a one-sided fo...cus on the danger of technology use no longer resonates with today's young technology users. - I will take you through how I developed the TechClever Student Digital Leadership Program that matches the needs of today's young technology users, with a new type of support they need, to achieve healthy and well-managed technology use. Who will benefit from this 30 minute webinar? - Those with Pastoral Care/ Student Welfare roles - Principals/Deputy Principals/Leadership - Those who are responsible for technology in the school When: Monday 21st September, 3.30pm-4pm (AEST) To register https://lnkd.in/gVPZ92H #school #educationalleadership #schoolleaders #schoolleaders #educationaltechnology #teachers #education #digitalliteracy #digitalwellness #edutech #students #principals
10.01.2022 Most of parental talk about their child's technology use is negative. Have you ever genuinely asked your child what they love about using technology? If you haven't then here's a few benefits for you in doing this. Especially if you have lots of arguments about technology. Here are 3 of them.... 1. You'll have a better understanding of what they actually do online- that's a good thing. 2. You'll start to open up the lines of conversation about their technology use- that's a good thing. 3. They will feel like you are taking an interest in their technology use- that's a good thing. We tend to be in a habit of putting down our child's technology use, especially when they get older (always focusing on getting them off). This leads to lots of arguments and anxiety for parents. Keeping talk in the family home about technology balanced will help to alleviate this.
07.01.2022 It is likely many children have viewed the very distressing video of a man committing suicide as it has been circulating for over a week on social sites & messaging services . The reality is that live-streaming violence is becoming more common and we cannot always be there to shield children from this content. In this article I help understand the issues and how do deal with it as a parent. 05.01.2022 Could you give up your smartphone for 6 months? I was interviewed recently by someone who tried but couldn’t. He asked my advice on why. My answer was you first need to understand the reason you pick up your phone in the first place. Knowing the underlying reason is the key! Changing that reason is the answer.... 03.01.2022 Who do you ask for advice about your child's technology use? Some parents tell me they ask their child's teacher, some tell me they visit their local GP and ask for advice. The reality is that many parents do not know who to turn to for advice. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this. #techclever #parenting101 #digitalwellness #onlinesafety

02.01.2022 The online space has changed so much for kids especially in terms of how much negativity they see online. This is usually referred to as hate ( which says it all!). Every time a child goes online they potentially enter an environment of online celebrity bashing, judgemental knee-jerk reactions & toxic negativity. It may not be targeting them but as bystanders it normalises 'hate". We know of the impact of children living or learning in aggressive environment but what about t...he stress they feel from constantly being exposed for hours every day to low grade aggression. My article published today explores this more. Check it out! 02.01.2022 New kinds of scams and misinformation are targeting children. Some are designed to deceptively get sensitive information about your child, to have them pay for a product that doesn’t exist, or to believe something is that is a lie. Each of these affect children differently and all are damaging to a child. A latest kind of scam is major names and celebrities being paid to use songs in their videos on TikTok without declaring that the transaction has taken place. This is illega...l as it is deception. If it wasn’t a scam they would have added #ad to the post to show that they are being paid. If your child uses TikTok ask them to check on this. 02.01.2022 I’m often asked how we get children's technology use under control. One reasons children’s technology use is out of control is because we keep TELLING them how to use technology. They need to come to the answers themselves. Our job as adults is to guide them to the answers. Here's why. Our use of technology is an intimate act. It's just you and the screen. No one sees everything you do and has insight into why you make the decisions that you do on your screen. For children th...is independence starts early- around 8-10 years. We need to know to what types of uses we want to direct them to, and then we need to work out how to do this. We need a plan that does not rely on berating them with what not to not- because clearly that's not working. Our aim should not be to instil fear and judgement but to guide them to be able to manage the challenges that technology offers alongside leverage the amazing possibilities it offers. https://lnkd.in/gTXKHXj https://lnkd.in/gNHf9zM #parenting #principals #schoolleaders #speaker #techclever #digitalliteracy #onlinesafety #digitalwellbeing #digitalwellness #familyandrelationships #school #mentalhealth
