24.01.2022 Today I had the privilege of sitting down with the wonderful John McGuinness of @3wayfm and having a chat about what happens when life doesn't quite go according to plan. Breast cancer happens when you least expect it, to the people who least expect it. I was one of them. Whether it's cancer, another chronic illness, an accident, a global pandemic... no matter the disaster, what truly counts is how we think and what we do.... That's what my book's about. @collinswarrnambool are highlighting #aholeinmygenes this month and donating $1 per book to the ever supportive @pinkhopeaus So if you'd like a surprisingly fun read, and want to support local as well as raising money for cancer, @collinswarrnambool and #aholeinmygenes are what you're looking for! #breastcancerawareness #life #pandemic #chronicillness #coping #resilience #growth #books # reading #breastcancermonth #mentalhealth

22.01.2022 I paid a special visit to @collinswarrnambool today to sign 180 of my books #aholeinmygenes for a special #breastcancerawarenessmonth collaboration for @pinkhopeaus One of those books has a very special message inside! Will you be the one who finds it? I might've picked a few things up on the way out #icanthelpmyself... #wellness #wellnessretreat #yogaretreatsrilanka #yogaretreat #yogaretreat2020 #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer #breastcancersurvivor #brca1 #brcasisterhood #brca #cancer #cancersurvivor #authortalk #aholeinmygenes #readersofinstagram #clinicalpsychology #healthpsychology #businesschicksau #thinkpink #breastcancermonth #breastcancersucks #breastcancerfighter #bookclubs #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters

22.01.2022 Working with young people is where it's at. I was so grateful to be invited back to talk to this year's @SouthWestEmergingLeaders about Health, Mind & Happiness - the science of wellbeing. It's even more amazing to hear what they took away from the experience.... Our future is looking pretty safe and bright with these emerging leaders. x

22.01.2022 Looking forward to hanging out with the South West Academy of Sport crew tonight to talk about building resilience. I miss seeing them face-to-face but we can't let a little thing like COVID-19 stand in our way!

22.01.2022 Today is the first day of #breastcancerawareness month. It's also just the first day of the month aka a great day to do your monthly breast check. With regular checks you can notice any changes in your breasts, skin changes, breast changes, tenderness, puckering, discharge etc. Breasts are all different colours, sizes and shapes. Get to know yours.... If you notice any changes, just pop down to your doctor and have it checked. That's what I did way back in 2010 and I'm fairly sure it saved my life. Between 2012 and 2015 I wrote my breast cancer memoir #aholeinmygenes in part to process my experiences but mostly with the hope of helping others, patients, family, health care professionals alike. The ever supportive @collinswarrnambool are using my book this month to support @pinkhopeaus They created a beautiful helix with my books, just like a DNA strand, because some of us have higher risks of cancer thanks to a mutation in our genes. Hence the name A Hole in My Genes. Pink Hope provides a wealth of knowledge and support for people at higher risk of cancer and I've been so privileged to support them over the past year with articles and webinars. Check them out. You can also support them by buying their gorgeous lipsticks. I'll touch base with more little tips through the month. In the meantime, if you or someone you know might need my book, get in touch with @collinswarrnambool - they can even mail them out. Ps I signed 180 copies and there's one with a special message! Will you be the one who finds it?? Pps #aholeinmygenes is also available in Cronulla at Anna's Shop Around the Corner #wellness #author #pinkhope #breastcancerawareness #breastcancer #breastcancersurvivor #brca1 #brcasisterhood #brca #cancer #cancersurvivor #authortalk #aholeinmygenes #readersofinstagram #clinicalpsychology #healthpsychology #thinkpink #breastcancermonth #breastcancersucks #breastcancerfighter #bookclubs #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #checkyourboobs

20.01.2022 This is everything right now.

19.01.2022 'To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.' Hopi Indian saying THE HUMAN SERIES ... In 2013 I travelled to Lima, Peru for the 7th World Congress of Behavioural & Cognitive Therapies & it began with a tornado of colour, music & movement as traditional dancers filled the aisles & the stage in a welcome message that spoke to my very being. Not a single audience member could resist the hip-moving music & contagious energy of that welcome, with smiles spreading across faces faster than wild fire. Did it matter that we'd never heard the music before, nor understood the lyrics? No. Because music is not to be understood on a logical level. It is to be felt. 'Through the universal art form of dance, we are given a vehicle through which we can uncover the dynamics and complexity of another culture, instead of making judgements based on what we perceive.' Logan Cross Dance is a universal language, and we all have the ability to speak it. And as Logan Cross of West Magazine also suggests - 'try taking a dance class and break the barrier that stands between your perceptions of a culture and the culture itself.' * * * * * #stopracism #racism #blacklivesmatter #equality #love #humanrights #discrimination #blackhistory #reparations #antiracism #whiteprivilege #black #blm #socialjustice #lgbtq #hope #oneworld #humanrace #onerace #humantohuman #thehumanseries #dance #universallanguage #peru #dance #traditionaldance #music See more

18.01.2022 Another lovely collaboration with Pink Hope Community xo

17.01.2022 This is fantastic news for Australians!

17.01.2022 This little book keeps making me grin just like the night we first launched her over 18 months ago now. Over 1,000 copies sold and hopefully over 1,000 people helped by what they've read. Not bad for a little indie book IndieMosh Self Publishing with Style I'm growing more aware of what this all means and the lives my story has touched and am all at once grateful and proud.... Sales have gone up again during both lockdowns which tells me that you, like me, are spending time for yourself, reading more. Contemplating. Daydreaming. Planning. Thinking. Feeling. A Hole in My Genes remains current no matter how long ago I survived breast cancer. There are copies of this (my) baby at Collins Booksellers Warrnambool, BLARNEY BOOKS & ART, Collins Booksellers Mt Gambier, Anna's Shop Around The Corner and even in my garage! Yell out if you'd like to buy a copy and spread the word. I'm sometimes reminded that I'm still selling books, especially as I head back into the writing class tomorrow with Ariel Gore for book number 2 - a mini self-help book that I've called Connected, Purposeful, Flourishing, Serene. Thank you all for your ongoing support. Jodie x

16.01.2022 So excited to be supporting our Moyne Shire Youth Council to get these innovative ideas off the ground. Check them out and vote on your favourites. I love KFC Counselling but I may be biased!

13.01.2022 Hi everyone in the Warrnambool region, Our wonderful Warrnambool City Youth council have constructed a brief survey to gather vital information about how our community is coping with COVID-19. This is the first part of the process in them developing some resources to be shared with the community, to benefit the community.... It will only take a moment of your time, but your input is invaluable. Please share it to anyone you think can help. Thanks in advance and take care! x Warrnambool City Youth

13.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day and the start of Mental Health Week. Our amazing Warrnambool City Youth launch an incredible resource for every local school student this week after conducting a community wide mental health check-in survey. The results are inspiring. 13.01.2022 'You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.' C. S. Lewis. THE HUMAN SERIES Will you look at this beautiful man? This is my friend Paul that one time we were waiting in line to get into Wimbeldon. Yes. The tennis championship.... Travelling isn't always about meeting new people. Sometimes it's about spending time with the people you already love. Paul had just moved to London when I visited, but we'd met years before in Newcastle when we worked together. He generously shared his gorgeous Nan Audrey with me when my Nan was so many kilometres away. He also so generously shared his life philosophies with me. Like me, Paul was single & childless at the time and had a super close relationship with his two nephews for whom he'd played the significant role of uncle in their upbringing. I remember asking him when he decided to move overseas, what about your relationship with the boys? What if that changes your bond? At that stage, I busied myself with forming firm bonds with my two nephews, contemplating the need to live close to them for the rest of my life. No, Paul told me. This is how you show them that there are many ways to live life. That there is a big wide world out there and by moving overseas and not subscribing to a cookie cutter existence, Paul was modelling a different road for his nephews to learn from. In London Paul found his true love and now lives happily ever after in New York and although I'm yet to meet Steve face to face, social media tells me that he knows just how lucky he is to have found Paul. Happiness. Love. Acceptance. Look at this face. I miss you Paully. Thank you for always allowing us to pick up where we left off, especially since I'm so bad at keeping in contact. I hope to meet you one day soon Steve. Stay safe you two. * * * * * #stopracism #racism #blacklivesmatter #equality #love #humanrights #discrimination #blackhistory #reparations #antiracism #whiteprivilege #black #blm #socialjustice #lgbtq #hope #oneworld #humanrace #onerace #humantohuman #thehumanseries #loveislove See more

11.01.2022 I'm so happy to support Pink Hope. They know the important questions to ask and in our latest collaboration we discuss the mental health aspects of cancer. I'm also excited that Collins Booksellers Warrnambool have decided to donate a portion of the sales of A Hole in My Genes to Pink Hope for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Stay tuned for more info on that and in the meantime, check your breasts.... #pinkhope #aholeinmygenes #BreastCancerAwareness

09.01.2022 For any writers out there, it's not too late to sign up to the online workshop I'm running with Australian Author Pamela Cook on September 26th where we explore the Psychology of Character. Join Pamela and Jodie for this unique workshop. Discover how using the basics of psychology can provide a greater understanding of your characters and learn how to create protagonists readers will connect and empathise with. Using her extensive experience as a clinical health psychologist,... Jodie will provide a framework for understanding your character's backstory and explain how past events can influence behaviour and relationships. Tapping into her many years of experience as an author and teacher, Pamela will guide you through a series of exercises resulting in a detailed character profile. Follow-up exercises and readings will help you develop this profile further. After registration you will have the opportunity to send through questions on the psychology of your characters which Pamela and Jodie will include in the Q & A section of the workshop. We are very excited about this first-time offered, online learning experience and hope to build on this workshop with related sessions in the future. Please share this with any of your writer friends!

08.01.2022 Oh there's been some soul searching going on over here. After literally years of contemplation and the past months returning to reading and learning, life has been throwing some key messages my way. After reading a quote this morning, it all clicked into place and I've decided to change some things up, and get off this social media merry-go-round.... I'm taking hold of the steering wheel and I hope you'll all stay with me for the ride. Big love, Jodie

08.01.2022 We had such a great chat about technology and wellbeing for Digital Innovation Festival 2020 with the Hive for our podcast Life Lab with Pete & Jode. Our latest episode drops tomorrow morning!

06.01.2022 Well here's a little bit of fun! Yogi photographer Peta Jolley & I are collaborating again. After our successful Conscious Living Retreat last year, we've decided to take our conversations to the podcast studio (aka my dining room table). Our first P&JLifeLab podcast episode was released today & we're shouting it from the rooftops!... It's called The One About Happiness. Life Lab with Pete & Jode is just another way to connect. Human to human. Every fortnight we'll be sharing a new episode. Next time, we tackle the topic of expectations. You can listen to us wherever you get your podcasts. (just ironing out some Apple & Google Podcasts issues) Here's the link to our page. https://anchor.fm/lifelabwithpandj We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we love creating it.

04.01.2022 Pete and I are finding our groove with P&JLifeLab - our latest episode on Success is up now, and if you don't know where to find us, check out the links below. x

03.01.2022 Recently, the Moyne Shire asked their young people what they needed to get through and bounce back from social isolation. The shire then worked with Brophy Youth Services to develop a series of FREE online workshops for young people that include yoga classes, music classes, and even some workshops with me! It's an incredible incentive and if you have a local young person who might like to get involved, check out the options below and encourage them to register.... x https://linktr.ee/becelmes

03.01.2022 'Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.' Hippocrates THE HUMAN SERIES ... Mind - Body - Spirit - Environment Western medicine proudly embraces the biopsychosocial approach to medicine but it wasn't so long ago that it was more biological than anything else. In Eastern medicine, mind, body, spirit and the earth are embraced and it's been said, 'Eastern medicine is not about curing your sickness. It's about keeping you well.' @timmydaly Prevention is better than cure. When travelling, I'll always jump at the opportunity to experience a traditional healing. It's a way of further immersing myself in the relevant culture. Would you look at this serene man? He is a traditional Vietnamese medicine man who I met in Hoi An. He assessed my health by feeling my pulse, his eyes closed. As someone with a history of cancer & living with multiple sclerosis, I felt anxious about what he would say. But to my utter surprise he declared me full of health. Phew, I didn't have to worry about how to get any Vietnamese herbs back through customs. Seriously though, the experience of sitting in his presence. His calm, contagious. Looking at the medicines and books adorning his shelves. Breathing in the scent of ancient tradition. Breathing. The entire experience contributing to my understanding of this culture. Of Vietnam. I'm a little biased towards Eastern medicine though. Although Western medicine dominated my cancer treatment, I leaned heavily on acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine to cope with the side effect. Maybe that's the lesson here. It's never one or the other. We're always better off in combination. * * * * * #stopracism #racism #blacklivesmatter #equality #love #humanrights #discrimination #blackhistory #reparations #antiracism #whiteprivilege #black #blm #socialjustice #lgbtq #hope #oneworld #humanrace #onerace #humantohuman #thehumanseries #tradition #chinesemedicine #vietnamesemedicine #balinesemedicine See more

01.01.2022 'If thou tastest a crust of bread, thou tastest all the stars and all the heavens.' Robert Browning It's amazing how many times Robert Browning has come up in conversation this past week.... Speaking with a friend this afternoon we marvelled at a joint love of going down the rabbit hole of favourite writers of our favourite writers. My spare room is testament to the accumulation of titles that lay in wait. As my mind is well nourished at the moment, my focus has shifted to my other brain - my gut. Things are changing! Is it age? I'm not sure. But the words FODMAP & gluten free have become crucial parts of my vocabulary. How I've missed bread! A great love & source of joy that sadly became too painful to even consider. But here I have a sourdough loaf - a work of art from the artist himself! Thank you Jimmi Buscombe. You have brought great joy to my Sunday afternoon. May you all be breaking bread with your loves tonight. Stay safe. Especially you Victoria.
