21.01.2022 Our dogs (Emma Wynn and I) spent 90 minutes on the beach. Can’t believe my 2 aren’t fast asleep. The weather was sensational.

20.01.2022 I can read Doctor. This says: Doctors need to take care of themselves so they can take care of others. A longer version has also been found. This adds: Doctors need to get enough sleep, rest, exercise and good nutrition and it is imperative they are empowered to keep their working week below 60 hours in order to achieve this.

18.01.2022 TROLLS Could somebody please write something encouraging? I have had quite a few trolls lately. The most special one was a woman who would be happy if I committed suicide and wouldn’t even have any compassion for my children. Because I had brought it on myself by killing children with drugs, getting paid off by big Pharma and generally being an evil person. I do delete them but when I get three or four per day it gets a bit depressing.

17.01.2022 This is pretty respectable doctor humour. This scenario actually happened to me when I started back at work 5 weeks after my daughter was born. Luckily I was gowned up so the anaesthetist took one side of my pants and one of the nurses the other and they made me decent again. Lots of laughter that day.

12.01.2022 I am going to harp on about this - with no apology. The 11th statement in the Physicians Pledge from the Declaration of Geneva 2017 (formally known as the Hippocratic Oath) reads: I WILL ATTEND TO MY OWN HEALTH, WELL BEING, AND ABILITIES IN ORDER TO PROVIDE CARE OF THE HIGHEST STANDARD.... So if we don’t look after ourselves we are not abiding by the latest Physicians pledge! Some hospitals are also forcing their doctors to break their oath. To care for others one must first care for oneself! I think we should all renew our pledges. (A bit like a couple renewing their vowels )

11.01.2022 Interesting article. Once again a doctors’ group is pleading for changes (or scrapping of) the mandatory reporting laws so that doctors can feel more comfortable asking for help without fearing career busting repercussions. Even when previous groups have asked for changes they have only asked for quite minor changes around wording but the government has refused. It really is only doctors who truly care about doctors so we’ve gotta keep doing this as well as slowly changing the system. Face book is not allowing me to add in photos of the rest of the article or correct my mistakes. Not sure why.

09.01.2022 MANDATORY REPORTING - WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU AS A DOCTOR AND YOU AS A PATIENT. There is always a lot of controversy around these laws and the recent changes, which seem to give impaired doctors more leeway, are still not acceptable to the AMA. I’m going to play devil’s advocate here hoping we can all have a bit of a debate. I believe the laws are entirely reasonable given we literally have patients’ lives in our hands. Also, for your treating doctor to believe you need to be r...eported you have to be very unwell and either not responding to treatment, refusing treatment or refusing to take sick leave - both the latter demonstrate a dangerous lack of insight. My earlier followers would already know I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 two years ago. Prior to this I had recurrent severe depression and some hypomania. Even when severely depressed I was able to do my job to a high standard and even received very good reports. This can occur because we are very high functioning. When I was slightly hypomanic I could do the job of 3 registrars . So to be at a point where we are unable to work safely we must be extremely unwell and need intense treatment or time off. You won’t be reported unless you refuse these instructions. My psychiatrist knows the mandatory reporting rules inside out and I have no fear of being reported .

07.01.2022 Whoo hoo. Gotta be happy with that. The more page likes the greater the reach for sending our message about doctor suicides and poor mental health.

06.01.2022 I have discovered something very very interesting (although others may know this already). I have compared the Declaration of Geneva c 2005/2006 with the latest one which is c 2017. (Used to be referred to as the HIPPOCRATIC OATH) The 2017 version is the FIRST ONE to mention showing respect to your colleagues and students. I would assume this means don’t yell, bully or belittle them or sexually harass them? Also it is the first version to mention looking after your own health.... I will show the comparison in the next post. Have we finally entered the 20th century, 17 years into the 21st? I have a thought bubble growing in my brain about getting a whole heap of doctors to update their pledge to the 2017 one. This would highlight the differences at the same time as highlighting the unacceptable things that are still going on for some doctors in training.

02.01.2022 As some will know the old Hippocratic Oath is managed and updated by the World Medical Association (WMA) and is referred to as the Declaration of Geneva. This draft was scheduled for approval in 2017 according to the WMA website. Please focus on the last paragraph. If we take this oath we are beholden to self-care - to care for patients one must first care for oneself. The more I am hearing however the more it sounds like this is not a CHOICE available to many doctors - particularly junior doctors and those in training. If we cannot follow The Oath this indicates BIG changes need to be made.

01.01.2022 THE EXACT WORDING OF THE UPDATED HIPPOCRATIC OATH Now known as the Physician’s Pledge, under the Declaration of Geneva. Note the 3rd to last paragraph.... Perhaps we should all take the pledge again? Then we cannot work ridiculous hours without breaking the pledge. We will also be promising to look after our general health so we can provide good care for patients. That is a win-win in my opinion.
