05.01.2022 N A T U R A L K I L L E R C E L L S Natural Killer Cells play an important role in assisting the body to fight infection or invasion. In some people however, the immune system incorrectly recognizes its’ own cells as foreign, and therefore attacks itself. Some women who experience recurrent miscarriage or embryo implantation failure, may have a higher level of natural killer cells. Pregnancy creates a unique situation, whereby the placenta invading the uterine l...ining creates a potential threat to the wellbeing of the mother. However, certain substances produced by the placenta, such as the hormone progesterone, cause a shift in the mother’s immune response in such a way that the threat is recognized, but not eliminated. Thus the pregnancy progresses and both mother and fetus are well. Some women who experience fertility problems such as recurrent miscarriage or failed embryo implantation, are more likely to have higher levels of natural killer cell activity than other women. Natural killer cells can be detected by blood test, or endometrial biopsy. There is ongoing research into the role of natural killer cells on recurrent miscarriage and implantation failure. Currently, a number of treatments for natural killer cells are being trialed. #nkcells #drjoe #fertilityjourney
