25.01.2022 If you are a counselling and mental health professional who wants to learn about relationships and how to help families, then come and join me in the Certificate in Systemic Family Therapy Program at The QLD Institute of Family Therapy. Work towards qualification, or simply come to learn what actually works! Information about the program can be found at https://www.qldfamilytherapy.com/certificate-program... 25.01.2022 Do you prioritise family time at the expense of individual pursuits? Or do you prioritise independence over connection? And what is the feeling that drives your choices? One key ingredient for thriving families is the experience of both connection and autonomy, and that this is supported by the family members.... And what really makes the difference is when times of connection and independence are pursued as a CHOICE and not as a reaction to family dynamics. A feeling of obligation, guilt, stress, anxiety or frustration. #drkateowen #familytherapy #familytherapist #family #parenting #emotionalhealth #emotionalmaturity #choices #reactivity #connection #independence #autonomy #bothand

24.01.2022 Thanks Toowoomba

24.01.2022 Thanks for having me Drop of Life Clinic The last 11 years has been a blast! @natalie_turvey @dropoflifepsychology

23.01.2022 What a great idea for kids that need more concrete learning! To give this a family therapy twist.....maybe think about the typical chain of events that relate to family interactions. Perhaps all family members can then appreciate how everyone plays a part. Maybe this will empower everyone in that family chain to do something different next time around.

23.01.2022 We are all made up of different "parts of ourselves". The part of us that is determined, the part of us that worries, the part of us that protects us, and many more. For those who have experienced childhood trauma, it is helpful to know that the "vulnerable child part" remains within and often takes over in times of stress and anxiety. This is a great tip sheet by NICABM to help explain this concept

23.01.2022 I love a great book Especially one that is practical and easy to read...with great lightbulb moments. I actually had the pleasure of talking with author @jondiwhitis over zoom while she was at home in New York when Australia was in our lockdown stage. The unique things you get to do in these unique times hey.... We talked about our journey into the helping profession and what inspires us in our work. She graciously gifted me a copy of her ebook and the similarities in our therapeutic approach has warmed my heart. If you have children or work with children affected by trauma and severe distress, I can highly recommend this book. Not only will you learn how to calm your own central nervous system in stressful situations, you will learn a tonne of practical body based and mindful exercises to help support children. Step by step instructions to support kids before, in the beginning, during, and after trauma events. A 101 manual. Thanks @jondiwhitis for this valuable resource #jondiwhitis #efttapping #tapping #body #firstaid #emotionalfirstaid #traumarecovery #kids #parenting #healing #resilience #somatictherapy #safety

21.01.2022 Another key ingredient for thriving families is an effective hierarchy. Dont be put off by the harshness of the word. An effective hierarchy is one in which the leaders of the family are respected, reliable, contain and support. In most cases this means parents being parents.... And as children grow up (think teenage years) they are given more freedom, power, decision making in the family, and responsibility. As with all things in family life, adaptability and flexibility is the key. This means that things WILL and MUST change over time. Some common hierarchical structures that can run families into trouble.... When parents hold the most power in the family and this is characterised by control and rigidity, then problems can arise. As children grow older they are still expected to follow the rules set by parents. I dont care that youre 25, you will do as I say! When kids hold the most power and parents are walking on eggshells so they dont upset them, problems can arise. This is called an inverted hierarchy as power is turned upside down so to speak. We let little Johnny decide his bedtime otherwise he has a meltdown and everything gets out of control. And finally, when theres no consistent leader in the hierarchy, then family members can feel lost, detached, and anxious. I hope this is interesting! #drkateowen #family #families #familytherapy #familytherapist #hierarchy #parenting #parents #kids #teenagers #familylife #systemsthinking #structuralfamilytherapy

21.01.2022 Coping with shame. I was watching an interesting webinar this morning NICABM about the impact of shame and wanted to share this important insight to help those who are affected by shame to normalise and validate the experience. 4 common ways of coping with shame are too: (1) blame others, (2) blame yourself, (3) avoid anything that will trigger shame and (4) shut down to not experience shameful feelings.... What is really helpful to understand is that these are all survival reactions to cope with the unbearable feeling that shame evokes. One question to reflect on is....how have these reactions helped to protect you in some way? And....do you still need these reactions? #shame #protect #normal #psychoeducation #humanexperience #acceptyourself #psychology #traumahealing

21.01.2022 Trauma-informed resources for teachers and educators! The Australian Childhood Foundation have put together their experience of working with schools and early childhood learning programs using trauma aware and responsive approaches, into resources that anyone can use to inform themselves and build their capacity to engage with students across settings in ways that integrate their learning and well-being into one way of understanding. 20.01.2022 Have you meditated today? Did you know that you only need to sit quietly and go within for 8 minutes a day to significantly improve your well-being? This was my 8 minutes this morning simply focusing on my breath - breathing in for a count of 3 and breathing out for a count of 6. If I didnt have my Muse brain sensing headband (neuro nerd ) I would have doubted that I reached a state of calm. But the data tells me I achieved 84% calm in that 8 minutes!... So today, sit and do the breathing exercise for 8 minutes. Even if it doesnt feel as though its working....trust me....youre crushing it #calm #calmyourmind #breathe #breatheinbreatheout #meditation #meditatedaily #centralnervoussystem

18.01.2022 What a great image to help normalise sensory overload for parents! If you can relate to any of these then maybe its time to take 5 minutes for yourself and reset your central nervous system. @psychedmommy #sensoryoverload #parenting #timeout #selfcare

17.01.2022 Did you know that families thrive when the parents honour their couple relationship and create opportunities for friendship and intimacy. 16.01.2022 If youve ever taken a flight, you would know that the safety briefing always instructs parents and adults to put on their breathing mask first before assisting children. The rationale is that adults need to be in a position of strength to really be able to support their child. This same concept can be applied to everyday life. Its vital that parents and significant adults in a childs life take care of themselves to be in the best emotional space to be able to support chi...ldren. To be clear headed, centred, thoughtful, mindful, with an ability to problem solve and navigate tricky situations. This is one concept taught in the Creating Calm for Kids online course at https://drkateowen.teachable.com/p/creating-calm-for-kids Scroll down to the course curriculum to view the free modules. 16.01.2022 Mental wellbeing is on a continuum which means that anyone can fluctuate up or down. Even the most robust and resilient person can experience anxiety and depression at some point in their lives. Thats why its important to pay attention to what sustains you and keeps you mentally and emotionally healthy. And thats why its important to check in with your friends, family and work colleagues. You never know how someone is truly feeling unless you take the time to ask.... #ruok #wellbeing #mentalhealth @thepsychologymum

14.01.2022 One of my passions is helping people disentangle the influence of the past from their current life. One tip to help you on this journey. When you have a strong reaction to yourself (I am no good) or a strong reaction to others (they are out to get me), try this.... 1. Find your calm - breathing, exercise, cup of tea, whatever works for you. 2. Find your clarity - ask yourself if this current situation reminds you of the past. Determine what is now and what was then. 3. Find your connection - disentangle from the past by reminding yourself that these are old hurts and connect to the present moment. #pastandpresent #calm #clarity #connection

13.01.2022 Love the Brain Boosters cards! Practical and easy to implement strategies to help calm the brain and body. Give back-to-back breathing a try.... As two people lean against each other taking nice deep breaths, each person takes a moment to notice the warm and peaceful feeling this brings. This exercise targets the limbic system of the brain, responsible for emotions. Great activity for the classroom as well as at home. Also great for sporting teams after a match. #calm #brain #breathing #stressless #teachers #sportscoaching #parenting

12.01.2022 Have you heard of the elevator pitch? Its what you would say to someone in an elevator (for 30 seconds) if you were pitching your business, a product, or an idea. Short, succinct, clear, and appealing.... Imagine that you had to describe yourself, your values, and what you bring to the world in 30 seconds. What would you say? I would say that everyday I create calm, clarity and connection. I aim to do this for myself through meditation, being curious about who I am and the world, and privilege meaningful connection within and with others. And with 15 seconds left in my pitch, I would add that I hoped I brought out these same qualities in others. Helping them to also find their calm, clarity and connection. 10.01.2022 As much as we dont like hearing the word rules, as a Family Therapist I know the value in families having them. Effective rules are fair, clearly communicated, and consistently applied. Families can run into trouble when rules apply to some and not others, when the rules are overly rigid and must be followed at all costs, when rules are clear to some and not others, and consistently changing.... The number one challenge I see in my practice is when parents set rules for kids and then inconsistently follow the rules. For example, a rule of two hours on screens which is forgotten when parents are busy and screens are helpful in keeping kids entertained. Only then to have an argument about Get off your device its been two hours! the following day. Families need to have rules and also be flexible. With the screens example, perhaps try communicating to your kids that Today is an exception to the rule because..... I hope you found this interesting #family #families #parenting #parentingtips #kids #teenagers #rules #drkateowen

09.01.2022 A Family Therapist sees the relationship between people as being the client in therapy. This means finding a common area that both parties want to work on together. Therapy can stall when people really just want the other person to agree with them and focus on one person making changes.... This is not to say that appreciation of each persons thoughts, feelings, and experiences is not important. It is! Thats why relationship work takes time. Each relationship is unique, complex, dynamic, and valuable #drkateowen #relationship #couple #family #parenting #sharedunderstanding #change #together #therapy

09.01.2022 One helpful strategy for managing stress, worry and anxiety, is to train your mind to actively look for exceptions to a problem. This means finding times when the problem was not as bad, or not there all together. This is powerful in generating hope that things can be better, and gives you clues to what works in combatting challenges like stress.... This is a great question to ask yourself and your children! And it is the details about that exception that are really important. What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen? How did it happen? Who was there? As we prime our brain with these details through remembering the exceptions, we uncover clues about our resources and resilience. And what is really amazing, is that our mind will start making unconscious choices and decisions to replicate those moments. Because, what we focus our attention on leads to actions and behaviours congruent with our thoughts.
