24.01.2022 What’s a Hiatus Hernia? A hiatus hernia is where part or all of the stomach migrates from its normal position in the abdominal cavity, into the chest. Symptoms that people complain of include: ... Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) GORD / regurgitation Breathing problems Gastrointestinal bleeding Occasionally, patients can present where the stomach has twisted or folded on itself (gastric volvulus) and this is a surgical emergency. This patient presented with a gastric volvulus. Her stomach had folded on itself and she required a nasogastric tube to decompress her stomach. She then proceeded to a laparoscopic (keyhole) hiatus hernia repair. At the time of surgery, 60% of her stomach had migrated up into her chest. This was reduced into the abdomen, the hernia was closed and a fundoplication was performed. She was discharged home on day 2 tolerating a soft diet. 23.01.2022 GIST - Gastrointestinal stromal tumours are rare soft tissue sarcomas that can be located in any part of the digestive tract. The most common locations are in the stomach and the small intestine. GISTs can present with trouble swallowing, intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain, weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding or metastases. If possible, the treatment of choice is surgical resection. This 8cm tumour was able to be resected via a laparoscopic (keyhole) approach. The pat...ient underwent a laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy and roux-en-Y reconstruction using the same surgical skills required for bariatric surgery (roux-en-Y gastric bypass). This patient did well following surgery and histology results were favourable. *Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. The Australian Diabetes Society endorses bariatric (weight loss) surgery as a treatment option for individuals with diabetes. Bariatric surgery remains the most effective weight loss intervention in individuals with obesity. 17.01.2022 As you may have heard, PM Scott Morrison announced last week, Given the current situation and Australia’s response to COVID-19, it is now safe to reopen elective surgery activity in an incremental and cautious way, while maintaining ICU capacity for localised outbreaks of COVID-19. This means elective surgery lists can return to normal lev...els, dependent on the availability of PPE at each facility. We welcome the announcement and are working closely with our private hospital facilities to ensure that elective surgeries can resume safely without exhausting our precious PPE supplies. Social distancing measures and visitor restrictions will remain in place to ensure the safety of our patients and hospital workers.
