25.01.2022 Amongst this global crisis, its easy to focus on the doom and gloom stories. Today, I want to highlight our amazing colleagues fighting on the front line and that Adelaide produces amazing doctors and medical staff. In 2015, I had the privilege of sharing the TEDx Adelaide stage with Dr James Muecke who this year, has been awarded Australian of the Year 2020 for his humanitarian work curing blindness with his charity Sight For All.... There are 15 million blind people in the world and many of them children who are blind from preventable causes like measles. This is the second Aussie of the Year doctor from Adelaide. Last year, it was Dr Richard Harris and I also had the honour of sharing the stage with him at Adelaide Oval. SA Great!

10.01.2022 How you can best prepare your family for the marathon lockdown. The psychological effects of social isolation on those on the front line. Interview #3 in my 10 interviews in 10 weeks challenge with Dr Osanda Wijeratne
10.01.2022 A common question I get is: "If my child is addicted to Fortnite, will they be addicted to gambling as an adult?" Key takeaways from this video, which addresses this question: -psychological and legal definitions of gambling -peer pressure for young players and gambling... -dilution of value with virtual bucks -learned behaviours/habits from loot boxes IF you have questions about this video, I am interviewing one of the authors of this submission next week, so please comment below. Dr Le reviews one of many submissions for the 2018 Australian Government "INQUIRY INTO GAMING MICRO-TRANSACTIONS FOR CHANCE-BASED ITEMS" by Dr. James D. Sauer (PhD). University of Tasmania, Australia and Dr. Aaron Drummond (PhD). University, New Zealand. ref: https://www.aph.gov.au//Gamingmicro-transactio/Submissions "Loot box systems need not meet the legal criteria for gambling to have potentially adverse effects on players (especially young players). Of the games we reviewed, all were available to underage players and all (even those that did not meet all the psychological criteria for gambling) included mechanisms for initiating and maintaining player engagement that tap basic psychological principles associated with gambling (Drummond & Sauer, 2018). Research investigating the exposure of adolescents to simulated gambling suggests that risks such as peer-pressure and the dilution of monetary value through the exchange of real currency for virtual currency might facilitate migration to monetary forms of gambling (King & Delfabbro, 2016). Moreover, adolescents tend to have poorer impulse control than adults, potentially increasing their vulnerability to gambling-like mechanics and behaviours learned from these mechanisms (Lussier, Derevensky, Gupta, & Vitaro, 2014). Finally, there is some evidence that the gaming population might be particularly at-risk for developing problematic gambling behaviours. For example, males are both more likely than females to develop pathological gambling behaviours (Johansson, Grant, Kim, Odlaug, & Gtestam, 2009), and overrepresented in the video-gaming population (Entertainment Software Association, 2017)."

09.01.2022 Current social distancing practices to combat COVID-19 has brought much fear, uncertainty and anxiety. What are the psychological effects of a prolonged national lockdown? Beyond Blue have reported a x4 increase in calls to their service seeking mental health support and x7 incease in online traffic to their website compared to the Australian bushfire disaster. 1 in 4 calls are related to COVID-19. We welcome the recent Government funding for bulk-billed telehealth follow up ...appointments with a psychiatrist for pre-existing patients (we know those with a past history of mental illness can relapse during stressful events). However, this does not include currently new cases in metro areas. In this video, Ill reference the recent Lancet review article published last month. But, we cant fully predict the true impact of a nationwide lockdown lasting months (this paper only reviewed studies on quaratine or in social isolation, which were generally less than 2 weeks duration). Remember, #stayathome wash your hands be kind to yourself and each other! https://www.smh.com.au//coronavirus-impact-on-mental-healt https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S0140673620304608 This video should only be used for educational purposes only and should not replace medical advice from your doctor.

08.01.2022 5 years ago, the first "Growing Up Digital" Study was conducted in Canada. They surveyed 1800 Canadian teachers who noticed children who were: *more distracted, *had less empathy ... *suffering from more depression and anxiety. The University of NSW and Gonski Institute for Education have repeated this study right here in Australia and the early results are alarming. 78% of teachers have noticed that Aussie kids show less empathy towards their classmates. This phase 1 video results is worth a watch. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n1uaBM_7v0&feature=youtu.be https://www.gie.unsw.edu.au/GUDAustralia

07.01.2022 I received some lovely feedback from a webinar I delivered over the weekend to The Society of Hospital Pharmacists: Definitely a topic to watch in the future and your presentation gave a great insight into the challenges & diagnosis! -Hospital Pharmacist Very very interesting talk about something I had no idea about to start with absolutely fascinating to hear from a child and adolescent psychiatrist as Ive only previously worked with adult and older persons psychiatri...sts. Such a different perspective and different set of considerations particularly around family dynamics. -Hospital Pharmacist Thoroughly enjoyed this topic- it was really eye-opening and got me down the rabbit hole too! I will be tuning into the documentary as well. thanks!-Hospital Pharmacist For a non-gamer this was an absolute treat to enter this world and how hard it is to consider pros and cons.. totally enjoyable. -Hospital Pharmacist To book me for your next school/work event or conference symposium please get a quote here: https://www.crowdpleaser.com.au/Medical-Doctor-Child-Psychi https://cgiclinic.com/the-society-of-hospital-pharmacists-/

02.01.2022 So much fun visiting Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital in Dubai in 2018. On that trip I found out that the popular game Roblox was banned in the UEA! At the time, I was aware of online predators on that platform, but other than that, my assumption was that it was a children’s game similar to Minecraft. ... I recently had a teenage female gamer explain to me that in Roblox, there are #lootbox mechanics in some modified games in Roblox and third party websites where you can buy and sell virtual items at a discount. The game developers of Roblox do what they can to stop this illegal practice, because they understand that under the Australian definition of gambling, this turns their much loved game into a mini-casino. Popular online games that children play are like Roblox, are forever evolving. My new motto to parents is, stay vigilant! *If you found this helpful, please follow or share my page or website cgiclinic.com because I am constantly sharing content as it evolves. #stayvigilant
