25.01.2022 Managing endo, especially during COVID, needs a well planned non-surgical and holistic approach. There are delays to surgery at present. Endo being a chronic condition means that there is no 'quick fix'. Surgery is only one option, useful for severe symptoms that don't improve with first-line treatment or when infertility is an issue. Anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) and hormone options help. They do have some mild side effects, but they are effective in reducing pain a...nd bleeding. There are different types of hormone options ranging from contraceptive pills, injectables, skin patches and intra-uterine devices (IUDs). It's trial and error to find the right one that works for you. It's also really important to see other Specialists. A pelvic physiotherapist will manage abnormal pelvic floor muscle activation. Dietitians offer tailored advice on foods that reduce inflammation and gut symptoms. Let's not forget the mental health impact of endo; seeing a mental health specialist can help women navigate their endo journey. 22.01.2022 In this part of the 'Endometriosis' series, I speak with Tish, who has endured endometriosis for over a decade. She bravely shares her experience of the illness. It is these conversations that will shape how endometriosis is viewed and how we care for women suffering from the wider consequences of endometriosis. 21.01.2022 Apparently Anne Hathaway sparked a debate when she dyed her hair in pregnancy back in 2016. . I was recently asked "Is it safe to use hair dye in pregnancy?" It's a great question! . The consensus: hair dye in pregnancy is SAFE. ... . Any potentially harmful chemicals in hair dyes are found at very low amounts and they are unlikely to be absorbed by your skin at levels enough to cause harm to your baby. . In saying that, there’s not a great quality of research around the topic. So, if you want to be extra safe, here are a few tips: . If you can, avoid hair dye in the first trimester (<13 weeks) when your baby is going through critical development Look into alternatives like pure vegetable/plant dyes and ammonia-free hair dyes Protect yourself by doing a patch allergy test first, wear gloves and use a ventilated room Consider highlights/streaks so there is less dye used or leave any dye in for less time . I hope that reassures you! 16.01.2022 It's crazy how this moment can mean so many different things for different people. . For some, it's surreal after years of trying. For some, it's scary and unplanned. For some, it's early hope because they know anything can still happen. . If you are staring at a positive pregnancy test, the next step is to catch up with your GP. They'll first arrange blood tests followed by an ultrasound depending on how far along you are and your pregnancy hormone level.... . Whatever your situation, we are there for you. 16.01.2022 It's #womenshealthweek, a great initiative by @jeanhailes. . This week is about instilling positive change, and for me it's also about empowering women on what's normal and what's #notnormal. . It's about NOT normalising women's concerns. It's not OK that women accept severe period pain, suffer silently with incontinence and prolapse, pass clots and soak clothes during periods, live with years of hot flushes, or be left traumatised after childbirth.... . #womenshealthweek is a call to action to make the health of women a priority, and know sometimes it's #notnormal. . . . . . . . #womenshealthweek #womenshealthweek2020 #womenshealth #empowerment #woman #obgyn #melbourneobstetrician #drkiranatmuri #obstetrician #gynaecologist See more

12.01.2022 Look at it go! That moment we see your baby on the screen for the first time is incredibly special for both the couple, and me! . After you find out that you are pregnant, catch up with your GP to organise a blood test and a referral for a 'dating' ultrasound. . We can see the flicker of the heartbeat as early as 6 weeks but more reliably after 7-8 weeks. Sometimes we might not see enough detail, so a follow-up scan 10-14 days later may be needed.... . At each of our visits, I'll check-in on your baby with a scan and you can share the videos and images instantly online with your friends and family. . . . . . . . 07.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week: Always was, always will be. This week is about acknowledgement and celebration. I have a real love and respect for Indigenous people and their history. I was lucky enough to spend a few years growing up in the NT as a kid, and returned each summer during med school as part of the John Flynn program. There are many health programs and dedicated workers out there making a real difference on the ground. This is to be celebrated. But, gestures by political figures like an unwillingness to raise Indigenous flags in Parliament during NAIDOC week or sanctioning the destruction of sacred sites injure trust that has taken time to build and have the potential to 'widen the gap'.

04.01.2022 "Why would they call it morning sickness when it happens all day and night!" Nausea and vomiting affects 7 in 10 pregnant women. In about 1%, it's severe and we call it 'hyperemesis gravidarum'. It can be relentless and exhausting. What makes it worse is there's no magic bullet. Women also sadly report feeling unsupported and stigmatised when asking for help.... Some useful tips: 'eat like a toddler': small regular meals and graze switch your prenatal multivitamin brand daily ginger and vitamin B6 see a doc to guide you on safe medications; there are options! use the meds regularly and time them to prevent your symptoms which med works is trial & error and usually you need more than one anti-histamines work but can cause sleepiness 'Maxalon' is commonly used and more effective when used with the others If you are feeling very dehydrated, attend hospital for IV fluids and stronger medications.
