25.01.2022 Since being introduced in 1960, The Pill was blamed for promiscuity, terrible side-effects and even destroying marriage. But the world's most popular contraceptive has also liberated millions of women. Before this time, sex outside of marriage was shameful, and the only contraceptive was a diaphragm which had to be fitted by a medical practitioner who would do so only if a woman was married. The Pill gave women married and unmarried - some control, and they accepted the hi...gher side effects for this liberation. The Pill research by Dr Pincus was funded by Margaret Sanger - a Catholic whose mother had died at 50, after 18 pregnancies - who was on a mission to find a reliable contraceptive. The Pill's contraceptive effect is via the Progesterone hormone. An Oestrogen is added to prevent breakthrough bleeding. The early Pill contained higher doses of both hormones and therefore had greater side-effects than the modern day versions. These include headaches, nausea, dizziness, bloating, and even thrush. The use of the early contraceptive pill was associated with some cancers and blood clots. Over time, the hormone levels have been refined, and its side-effects reduced. Nowadays, the average Pill's oestrogen content is a third of what it used to be, the progesterone a 10th or less. There are also different kinds of these hormones placed in different combinations. So, if one type of pill is found to be unsuitable, there may very well be an alternative that can help. This post is part of Dr Kellie's 'Problem Periods' social media series. 25.01.2022 On Sunday, myself and Eve Midwife Lauren Williams were featured in a Sunday Mail article "The Covidians: Lockdown gives state’s birthrate a bump". We were asked to comment on whether Covid has resulted in a baby boom. The answer is YES! Despite the uncertainty in the world during lockdown, we have seen a 30 percent increase in new mums expecting in March-May 2021. Such an interesting phenomenon. 18.01.2022 It's World Breastfeeding Week. Controversially, I don't think this needs to be a thing. By #WABA promoting breastfeeding in 2020 for a healthier planet" is just another way to make mum's feel like they are not good enough. There are undeniable benefits to breastfeeding, however for some mothers and babies, bottlefeeding or mixed feeding may actually be best. I breastfed both of my babies, but it wasn't easy at the beginning. I felt a huge societal, and internal pressure to... breastfeed. I was so determined to do it, that in retrospect, I put my own physical and mental health to the side. I eventually enjoyed it both times, and was sad when my babies stopped breastfeeding, but the pressure to breastfeed really clouded my enjoyment of the first few weeks of both of my children's lives. So, for those of you who can, and want to, breastfeed, I support and applaud you. I will continue to promote antenatal breastfeeding education, early skin-to-skin, lactation support, in-hospital advice and postnatal support for this. For those mums that physically can't or have made the decision to not breastfeed, good on you for making the best decision for you and your baby. You have my full support. You will also receive feeding education, early skin-to-skin, lactation support (if you want it), in-hospital advice and postnatal support. I vote that in 2021 we have a "World Infant Feeding Week" instead.

16.01.2022 What is a normal period? A normal period is one which doesn't cause large clots, doesn't require you to wear two pads at once, and doesn't cause iron deficiency over time. A normal period is one which is regular. A normal period is one which gives little discomfort and doesn't limit usual activities. Most women will have their first period around 12-13. Periods can be irregular for up to the first eight years of cycles, mainly due to the inconsistent hormone messages the ...brain sends to the ovaries until this system matures. The average cycle is 28 days long, although anything between 21-35 days is normal. Bleeding lasting from 2-7 days is normal. Most women will have their last period around age 51. This post is part of Dr Kellie's 'Problem Periods' social media series. Dr Kellie strongly believes in empowering women by providing them with the knowledge to make informed healthcare choices. Information presented in her social media posts is NOT MEDICAL ADVICE and only provided for general information purposes. 13.01.2022 This couldn't be more true! Once baby is born, most new parent's focus only on baby's needs (Obviously there is a survival advantage in this!). But, new parents often forget their own basic needs - some sleep, time to eat, time to shower, time to get out for a walk. As friends and family of new parents, it's so important to ask "But how are YOU doing?" and "what can I do to help?" . Graphic via @pregnantchicken

13.01.2022 This is Cathy. Cathy is my PA here at Eve Health. She has worked at Eve for many years and her knowledge base and organisational skills are next level. 13.01.2022 What to expect at a screening? A cervical screening test is collected in exactly the same way as the previous Pap smears were. When lying on your back with your knees bent, a doctor inserts an instrument called a speculum into your vagina so they can see the cervix. They use a brush to then take a sample of cells from the cervix that get sent to a laboratory for an analysis. . The test is usually completed within one minute and should cause only mild discomfort. Man...y women are embarrassed at the thought of having this test done. There is no need to feel embarrassed as this is one of the most common procedures performed by them and they know it is such an important part of protecting your health. . If you would like any more information about cervical screening, please see your GP who can refer you for more information or a further assessment if required. . 09.01.2022 Is it safe to have the test only every five years? This is a question I get asked very frequently. The short answer is yes. . For most women, the time from picking up a virus, to developing abnormal cells and/or cancer is 8-15 years. .... Compared to the old Pap Test, the HPV test flags that there is a problem much earlier and it is less likely to miss an early abnormality. . In European trials with tens of thousands of women, the new screening test and longer screening interval actually provided 70% greater protection than the old Pap Test against Cervical Cancer. . This is an excerpt from my blog post on Eve Healths site. Follow the link below to read more! . 07.01.2022 What is one thing you enjoy doing that you can incorporate into your daily or weekly routine? E.g. the ritual of sitting down with a cup of tea and a book, journaling or drawing, dance in the kitchen to your favourite music, sitting down (or getting out!) to play with your kids, phoning a friend to catch-up... 05.01.2022 How do I find a psychologist? The best way to find a psychologist that is right for you is by asking your GP for a recommendation or by searching www.psychology.org.au. Telehealth appointments are also available during the COVID-19 pandemic via Beyond Blue (Beyond Blue - www.beyondblue.org.au) or, for new or expectant parents, through the Gidget Foundation of Australia (Gidget Foundation - www.gidgetfoundation.org.au). Do I need a referral to see a psychologist? No, how...ever if you are likely to need regular sessions with a psychologist, seeing a GP to discuss your mental health and also to consider a Mental Health Treatment Plan is advised. Your treatment plan will have goals agreed by you and your doctor and allows you to claim 10 psychology sessions per calendar year through medicare. So, what are you waiting for? #liptember

02.01.2022 Repost PANDA One in five mums will experience perinatal anxiety and / or depression. We also know that a significant number of non birth parents experience similar rates of mental illness. Left untreated, these illnesses can have long-lasting impacts on parents, partners, baby and the rest of the family. The key to getting help is being able to recognise that something is wrong and being brave enough to ask for help to ‘tell someone who cares’. That might be talking t...o your partner, child and family health nurse, doctor or PANDA’s National Helpline. Learn more about the signs and symptoms via the link in our bio.
