20.01.2022 A large meta-analysis of research (representing more than 3.5 million people from over 90 different countries) found consistent gender differences in rates of depression. Females are twice as likely to get depressed as males. (Two-thirds female, one-third male). Unexpectedly, the researchers found that in countries where there was greater gender equity, the proportion of women who were depressed was even greater. These gender differences first appear when girls are 12 years old. 06.01.2022 Does mindfulness meditation benefit mood? Therapeutic discourse has promoted mindfulness as beneficial for depression and anxiety. New research, however, shows a gender difference. Mindfulness meditation improves women's but not men's negative affect even though men do improve in non-reactivity, nonjudgment and self-compassion. The researchers hypothesize that these outcomes are due to gendered differences in emotional regulation. Men typically use distraction or engaging with the environment as a way of emotionally regulating and women are prone to ruminate. http://journal.frontiersin.org//10.3/fpsyg.2017.00551/full
