25.01.2022 Hormones, estrogen and progesterone, affect the function of many organs including the brain. At no time is this more profound than during and after pregnancy, but remember puberty and menopause as well. Wonderful to see research focusing on this and not just the pelvic organs and breasts.

22.01.2022 The advice for pregnant women in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic remains reassuring not only are transmission rates low in our community, but the disease do...es not appear to be worse in pregnant women compared to other population groups. This is not the case when it comes to influenza, however, where pregnant women are more vulnerable and can require the same kind of intensive care we are seeing on the news daily. The good news here is that influenza is not as contagious AND WE HAVE A VACCINE! It is freely available to all pregnant women through your GPs and local pharmacies, so whilst coronavirus is the virus of the moment, don’t forget to protect yourself, your baby and our community by getting your flu shot. #FluShot #VaccinesWork #AdelaideObstetrics #GLOWSpecialists #DrKateGowling #DrCharlottePaull #DrMonikaSkubisz

22.01.2022 Folic acid supplementation is important before and during early pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects, but there is no proven benefit beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy. Yet in Australia, many women are taking high doses of folic acid throughout pregnancy in their multivitamins. We want to know if this is causing evidence of excess in late pregnancy. If you're less than 16 weeks pregnant and interested in taking part in our study, contact the SAHMRI team directly or PM me.

22.01.2022 South Australian hospitals, both public and private, have done a fantastic job preparing for COVID19. An important part of that has been the necessary restricti...ons on surgical procedures. We know this has caused some distress and we want to assure our patients we are constantly reviewing our waitlist. We await further announcements in the coming days/weeks and will be in contact regarding a theatre date as soon as we can. #COVID19 #theatrerestrictions #GLOWSpecialists #DrKateGowling #DrCharlottePaull #DrMonikaSkubisz

22.01.2022 Adequate levels of omega-3 in early pregnancy help to prevent preterm birth at less than 37 weeks. For a great summary about this and other preterm birth prevention strategies, see our article in the latest Whole Nine Months Magazine http://info.thewest.com.au/westadver//20200515/page10.html #omega3inpregnancy #thewholeninemonths #drmonikaskubisz

21.01.2022 Pregnancies lasting the ‘Whole Nine Months’ give babies the best start in life. The SAHMRI team based at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital has made eno...rmous contributions in the development of the Whole Nine Months campaign, aimed at educating parents-to-be on preterm birth prevention and new guidelines for perinatal practice. Among 200 obstetricians, midwives, general practitioners and other professionals who have been involved in antenatal care, our health network proudly launched the campaign led by researcher Dr Monika Skubisz on our Play Deck yesterday with some help from Emily Holyoak and her daughter Alexa, now aged 8, who was born 12 weeks’ premature. 11.01.2022 In Western cultures when we are asked how many children we have, we tend to only talk about the living. It’s so important to acknowledge the love and grief for those that never fully bloomed.
