25.01.2022 Pandemic Pondering Whilst an excellent job has been done in publicising the importance of social distancing and everyone has done really well in following the guidelines / regulations I worry that we have not adequately reassured people that Emergency Departments are still safe places to take your sick loved ones to. I work in Paediatric Emergency one day a week and have never before seen such consistently low numbers of presentations. Whilst the social distancing measure...s might be making viral infections less of an issue than they usually are at this time of year, there are many other conditions that should not logically be occurring at a reduced rate (diabetes, urinary tract infections, feeding difficulties etc). Data is starting to come through from other countries about this now. There have been potentially avoidable deaths amongst children in Italy who, under usual circumstances, might have presented earlier to hospital. We are very aware that people are appropriately concerned about corona virus, but other medical conditions do not just disappear. Please look after yourselves and your children and if you need medical assistance, please be rest assured there are procedures in place to keep you safe in the Emergency Department or when visiting your GP. We miss you!

24.01.2022 As an immigrant to this nation I am humbled to have been made to feel so welcome by almost everyone I have met. I am particularly honoured to have many indigenous friends and am grateful to the communities who have welcomed me as their paediatrician. To anyone wanting some tips on how to be an ally to our indigenous friends this post is a good starting point

12.01.2022 Starting school can be anxiety provoking for parents and children alike. We want to support your family to make this transition a celebration of new milestones ...rather than a gut-wrenching battle with separation anxiety. Making a few plans over the summer break can make a big difference. Read on to find out what Highgate Hill Paediatrician Dr Nadia Leonidou suggests for a great start to your childs prep year. >>> https://www.growmedical.com.au/blog/getting-ready-for-prep See more

11.01.2022 Exciting new venture ahead....

10.01.2022 Family is at the heart of paediatrics and why I do what I do. Would love to see a few entries from families I know.

08.01.2022 As someone with a latex allergy the balloons in every card shop and florist make me so nervous every year. Talk to your teens about choosing allergy appropriate valentines gifts if their valentine has allergies (or if they might not know) but also get comfortable having those awkward conversations about allergen transfer when kissing and making sure they know how to keep themselves safe.

07.01.2022 One of my many passions (and frustrations) is the lack of recognition to gross motor development once children learn to walk. There is so much focus on this early milestone but children then need to learn to jump, climb, hop, skip, ride bikes etc etc. all before they start school. I am referred lots of the younger school age children with perceived difficulties in fine motor skills and focus and attention, when the underlying difficulty is actually a lack of core strength and difficulty maintaining a static posture. How can you concentrate when it hurts to sit still?

07.01.2022 Turn it teal for food allergies Saturday 4th May Story Bridge and Victoria Bridge will be turning teal in support of food allergies. Various other locations around the country will be lighting up as the month progresses.

05.01.2022 Learning the ropes at Wallace Street Specialist Centre and looking forward to seeing patients here soon.

04.01.2022 These words are not mine but they are beautiful and describe so many of the young people I have the honour of getting to know... Hes the kid who never listens the first time. Or the second.... Or even the tenth. You can pick him up out of the line-up in the school hallways. Hes the one who doesnt walk in an orderly fashion. He runs or spins or stops in his tracks if something catches his eye. He has a hard time keeping his hands to himself. His handwriting and spelling dont betray his intelligence...you might be fooled into thinking its all a struggle if youre not paying attention. Hes the one making all the noise with his mouth. His heart sometimes breaks a little because hes not always sure why what hes doing is so wrong. His ideas come out in a jumble and you have to slow way down and look in his eyes to listen. His ideas are just too big and too fast for his head it seems and so they come out in any old order. But he needs you to hear him. His energy cannot be contained by walls and he seems to take up so much more space than his size. He tries every ounce of your patience if youre trying to get somewhere. You might send him to put on his shoes and hell come back with a new LEGO creation. Time has no meaning when a new plan strikes. He can understand stories on a level well beyond his years and will floor you with his insights. He is smart as a whip, yet school isnt always his jam. Hed rather talk about why Sally is giving away 24 of her apples instead of solving the story problems in math. He loves fiercely and deeply and without reservation. He will tuck a blanket around you, if you look cold, and will always share a bite of his cookie. He can read your emotions on your face and will always know who is lonely on the playground. He runs to open your car door and will insist on carrying your bag in the house for you. He loves to climb into your lap and wants to hold your hand as he falls asleep. His greatest joy is making you laugh from deep in your belly. His body is seven but his soul is much older. He is so many things...sometimes the world wants to label him with letters and words and numbers...and sometimes these help us understand him better. But the letters and words and scores are not what he is. They cannot capture his essence. There is no data taken anywhere on big hearts, but if there were, this kid would be the shining star. Like all our kids he is just himself. The sum of gifts and struggles all bound together with love. And my hope for him, and all kids really, is that we can see these clearly. We can look beyond the definitions and categories to whats shining in their eyes and hiding behind their smiles. And we can love them just the way they are.

04.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads. Hope you have a wonderful day with your children

03.01.2022 Great innovation. In a small study 100% of children who were willing and we’ll enough to complete homework swallowing lollies / sweats / candy with their heads in 5 different positions were able to learn to swallow tablets within 14 days. Amazing! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxqs7flHJQc

01.01.2022 The imagery this video creates is so powerful. Recognising the signs of trauma is sometimes the first step towards stopping it. Appreciating that these little people are not deliberately defiant but scared goes a long way towards allowing them to heal. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o3pYZi06DHQ

01.01.2022 COVID Update: Have you been in Adelaide on or since Monday 9 November 2020? If so, Queensland's Chief Health Officer is advising that you should get tested f...or COVID immediately regardless of symptoms and self-quarantine in your current accommodation until 14 days since you left Adelaide, as it is possible some may already be infected. If this applies to you, stay at home and book a Telehealth Consultation to arrange testing. #covid19australia https://growmedical.com.au/bookings See more
