25.01.2022 There are different types of lower back pain. There is the acute stuck back as in this websourced photo. Some back pain is quite simple and easily fixed. Some is quite complex. The more that you can understand what positions help and what makes it worse the easier it is for your therapist to help.
25.01.2022 Do you get hamstring tightness as you play sport? This can come on towards the end of the game and feels like a cramp. This responds poorly to normal treatment because it is a mixture of causes. Come in for an individualized approach to this condition.
22.01.2022 Sore heels? Especially in the morning or after sitting? Probably plantar fasciitis. Look at your shoes, try to shift our weight off the sore area [if only one foot this may involve some twisting] by swaying forwards and always have shoes with an arch next to the bed when you get up in the morning.
22.01.2022 Each profession has its own postural stresses. Come in for a specific preventative program for your industry. See the concreter below and guess what program he requires.
22.01.2022 Weekend!!! Time to do some of the 150 minutes per week of exercise that we are meant to be doing, Make sure whatever you are doing that you finish with some self treatment, Be kind to yourself.
20.01.2022 Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Maimonides Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/maimonides_326751 Have you ever considered how this applies to healthcare?
20.01.2022 Computers are not our friends. They distract us from the correct way to sit at a desk. Beware the permanently migrating mouse as it has dreadful effects on your shoulder position. Be active as you read my facebook posts over the weekend.
20.01.2022 A golf ball can be your friend if you have painful feet !!!!!
19.01.2022 Be mindful of how you use your neck as well.
18.01.2022 Back pain develops for various reasons. I had one person who developed acute lower back pain after a marathon weekend of play station. Get to know your couch and its affect on your body. Image below from the web
17.01.2022 Red is stop. Do not proceed. A technique or exercise is producing the wrong type of Pain. Yellow is caution. There is some discomfort but is not the pain that we complain of. If the pain is reducing with treatment then we can continue. If unchanged or worsening then stop. Green light is all systems go. No pain and everything feels good.
17.01.2022 Do you ever wonder why some people keep getting injured? In an AFL context some players are in for one week and then out for four. Often this is a consequence of one ongoing injury which is altering movement patterns every where. If this is happening to you come in and see me for a biomechanical assessment.
17.01.2022 Spring has sprung. Apart from yesterday's winter blast, it's grass growing time. Time to cut the grass. If your back hurts when pushing a mower then you are not holding your core stable and you are overarching. Notice the lack of footwear below!!!!!!
16.01.2022 With lower back of peripheral origin, probably you wont be as crooked as this picture but one hip will be slightly pushed out to the side. In this image from the web we would say this gentleman is pushed out on the right severely.
16.01.2022 Spring has sprung. Apart from yesterdays winter blast, its grass growing time. Time to cut the grass. If your back hurts when pushing a mower then you are not holding your core stable and you are overarching. Notice the lack of footwear below!!!!!!
16.01.2022 Weekend sport. Important to remind your home athletes to work on their stretching and core stabilising program. Good luck getting them to do it as well!!!!.
15.01.2022 The power of three little words. From the emotional high of I love you to the fear and loathing of my health record to response to treatment. Response to treatment!!!!!. In the physios world these are the most important words. What is happening? Is the problem getting better, worse or staying the same during that technique/exercise?
14.01.2022 Long term recurrent injuries are often poorly treated acute injuries. An ankle injury that has not been fully treated will cause long term changes in your walking style. You may have a sore back which is caused by an old ankle injury!!!!!! Unless your practitioner looks at the whole you this can be missed and be the reason why treatment does not help your back.
14.01.2022 Have you heard of the traffic light concept of pain?
12.01.2022 Chronic conditions are extremely frustrating. Just when you think you have made a whole heap of progress it all comes back. Often your exercise program needs to be revised and you will then be able to progress. Its a maze but you can be amazing ..
10.01.2022 The best thing for self treatment. Who needs a masseur?
10.01.2022 Sitting waiting for a train. Sitting can be turned into a dynamic stabilisation exercise. In English this means that you can sit actively using the correct technique. At the least if your back hurts when you are sitting it relates to the way that you are sitting. Beware the flicker and the sloucher. Image below of a sloucher.
10.01.2022 Walking behind people is a good way of seeing how their feet work. Some people roll out and some roll in. Always good to look at the wear pattern on the shoe
09.01.2022 School is well and truly back. School shoes bought and runners. Always a good idea to carefully inspect last years pair to figure out what wear pattern your child has. I am not just talking about the bottom of the shoe, rather how the shoe has been stressed over its life.
09.01.2022 For the older athlete injuries take longer to heal. Some of these injuries can be viewed as a check of how our body is going overall. For an acute back problem there can be the chronic grumbling problem which has suddenly changed. There can be 3 or 4 factors underlying the problem.
08.01.2022 One of my patients said "I come here to experience pain". I replied "No, you come here to understand pain". Treatment is all about the response of your body to an exercise or technique. Image below taken from the web.
08.01.2022 Off season is the time to deal with all those injuries you have been carrying. Time to get a program to fix yourself and stop dreading pre season. Lack of stabilisation through the rib cage noted in below preventative image.
08.01.2022 Gardening time. Always good if you have had back problems in the past to remember what works for you. If you come in for treatment find out if you are a bender overer, a kneeler or a hands and knees person. This will create different problems according to your choice. Image from the web of a bender overer.
08.01.2022 Acute back pain. Can be extremely debilitating. Standard treatment is simple and effective. Extension exercises can be fantastic. Sometimes you need another direction with treatment and a few variations of how to sit and how to rise. There are practitioners who dont just use what they have been taught.
07.01.2022 Calf injuries are common. Often they get better with a period of rest and gentle stretching. We find that unfortunately they can become recurrent. The reasons why they become recurrent are that the causative factors have not been addressed. Fix the cause fix the problem. Come in and see us at Drouin Physiotherapy for a comprehensive rehabilitation program.
07.01.2022 Are exercises supposed to make my problem sorer? That depends on what the exercises are trying to do. If trying to gain range or to alter your posture then they may well do so. Strengthening exercises are not supposed to hurt at all and neither are stabilizing exercises. Stabilizing means that the sore area is kept still and thus should not hurt.
06.01.2022 Amazing how small changes make a very big difference. If you are short and do not have a footrest that can cause ongoing lower back pain. Think about what makes your problem worse as in this will lie the seeds for its ultimate correction.
06.01.2022 Professionals will often say the best to sleep is in a neutral position of your spine. This obviously doesnt work if you move around in your sleep or if you have a small child in your bed. Wherever possible though I would try to avoid lying on your front over night as it creates a marked torsion to your neck. You will find that it may be very difficult to turn your head to one side in the morning. Weekends are however for trying to gain some sleep!!!!!
04.01.2022 Shin pain? You can do so much better than rubbing the sore parts. Get someone to film your running technique. You are trying to be as upright as possible. Check your shoes. Try a softer surface. Stretch your calf on a step. Come in for a detailed assessment of all the parts of this problem.
03.01.2022 Sore feet? Especially after exercise? Have a good look at your shoes and how they wear. Twist the shoe, to the big toe side and then to the little toe side. There may be quite a big difference. This will give you an idea as to why you get sore feet as the shoe will typically go the way that it habitually is oriented. Always bring a worn pair of shoes in when you see your practitioner if you have a lower limb disorder.
