22.01.2022 Beach Dangers While going to the beach can be a really fun activity for our pets there are a few dangers that we need to be careful of. 1. Blow Fish - Dogs absolutely love to pick up and eat Blowfish! Unfortunately, blowfish are toxic to dogs as they contain tetrodotoxin. If your dog does eat or chew on a blowfish you must get the immediately to a vet so treatment can be commenced. Signs of blow fish ingestion including vomiting, paralysis and lethargy. Dogs breathing c...an also be affected and in severe circumstances animals need to be placed on a ventilator. Even if your dog does vomit the blow fish we still recommend immediate veterinary treatment as symptoms may still worsen without veterinary intervention. 2. Heat Stroke - Be careful to minimise exercise in the direct sunlight and in the extreme heat of the day. Signs of heat stroke include drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, mental dullness or loss of consciousness, uncoordinated movement, and collapse. 3. Salt water ingestion - In most cases, a few mouthfuls of salt water may only cause diarrhea. Consuming large amounts of salt water, however, can be fatal. When a dog ingests salt water, the excess salt draws water from the blood into the intestines, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration 4. Hot sand/gravel - Ensure to check with your hands/feet the temperature of the ground. If your hands/feet cannot tolerate the temperature of the ground for at least thirty seconds then the ground is too hot for your dogs paws! Exercising on hot grounds can lead to dogs paw pads being damaged and burnt. Post below any questions you have!

22.01.2022 Grass seeds! Spring is here and unfortunately for our pets that means grass seed season is also here. These little meanies can cause some serious injury to our pets. Grass seeds can become lodged in paws, ears and throughout the coat of a dog or cat and can be quite painful for the animal. ... Clients often come in when their dog is scratching their ears, head shaking, licking at their paws or non-weight bearing. At this stage, animals often need to be sedated or anaesthetised in order for us to open the wound and search for the grass seed. The grass seed acts as a foreign body and causes an abscess that will not improve until the grass seed is removed and the animal is treated with appropriate medication. Our top tip to avoid this scenario is regular inspection of your animals coat, ears and paws. This should be done daily - especially after walks. If you do see a grass seed gently remove it - if you cannot remove it, come and see us ASAP.

20.01.2022 Looking for a good home. Please contact us on 9306 3911 if youre interested in adopting. Healthy adult.

19.01.2022 Spring is definitely upon us, and summer is just around the corner. With this beautiful weather comes an increase in ear and skin problems. The most common ear problem we encounter in pets is otitis externa, which is inflammation and/or infection of the outer ear. This can present with head shaking, smell from the ears, visible discharge at the canal opening or holding the ears abnormally. Otitis can be caused by ear infections, secondary to allergies, foreign bodies (suc...h as grass seeds) or growths within the canals. Once the vets examine your pet’s ears, they will often take a swab to assess under the microscope. This will help the vets determine the underlying cause and how best to treat it. Sometimes further procedures are recommended or treatment is prescribed, being a combination of ointments, tablets and cleaning solutions. Spring and summer are the most common seasons for skin irritations too. Our pets get a variety of skin lesions, due to various causes. They often present with itching, hives, lumps, hair loss and weeping sores, due to a combination of allergies, infections, insect bites and other underlying diseases. The vet will take a thorough history, complete a full physical examination and discuss further investigation or testing that may be required. Skin lesions may be treated with creams, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, dietary modifications or may resolve with treatment of the underlying disease.

16.01.2022 Corona Virus/ COVID-19 information. With the developments over the last few weeks and measures taken recently, we thought it would be good to give some relevant information with specific reference to your pets and their vet visits. Firstly - there is no need for us to change or alter the opening hours of our facility. Because we operate on an appointment basis, there is minimal contact between people visiting our hospital. Also - due to the large size of our reception area, y...ou can easily be assured of a good distance between clients waiting for appointments. For clients wanting the assurance of appointments during known quieter times of the day - these are generally between 10am and 1pm weekdays and 3pm and 5pm on Saturdays. Please note that this is purely a generic observation and does not necessarily guarantee that there will be no other clients with appointments at these times - they are just generally a quieter traffic part of our day. So - in essence it is business as usual for you and your pets. We have taken the necessary extra precautions in our hospital with many hand sanitiser points in our facility both for public and staff use. We have also fielded many questions regarding your pets and corona virus. Please know that there is no current evidence that shows that COVID-19 can be transmitted to pets nor that they can be carriers and transmit COVID-19 to their owners. Dogs and cats do have their own corona virus group infections and these are not the same as COVID-19. We encourage everyone at this time to seek out relevant and evidence supported information and we would be more than happy to answer any questions surrounding the relevance to pets through our phone lines or e-mail ([email protected]). 15.01.2022 Lets talk desexing Having your pet sterilised can be a really scary time. This is often because there are many ideas on when is the right time to get the procedure done? What will happen to my animal if I do get them desexed? Is the anaesthetic safe? Will my animal be in pain? There are many important benefits associated with having your pets desexed. ... These include; -Reduction in risk of some malignant cancers, in organs such as testes, ovaries, cervix or uterus -Prevention of infection of the uterus -Prevention of false pregnancy syndrome -Reduction in risk of some serious diseases such as prostatic infection and perineal hernia -Reduction in territorial behaviour, such as urine marking -Reduction in antisocial behaviour -Reduction in wandering The exact time to desex your pet depends on the species, gender and breed. The protocols we follow include: Cats - Females and males from 6 months (should be kept indoors until desexed) Dog - Small breed from 6 months, large breed to giant breed dogs are often performed older than 6 months depending on their growth. We ensure animals are covered for pain relief on the day and then they are sent home with oral pain relief medication. As for safety of the anaesthetic, patients have a designated nurse that measures their vital signs throughout the procedure and can intervene if necessary. We can also run a pre anaesthetic blood profile that will help ensure your animal is safe to go under an anaesthetic. If you have any questions regarding desexing procedures or would like to book your pet in please contact us on 9306 3911.

12.01.2022 New Dental Xrays! We have recently acquired a full veterinary dental xray unit that enables us to do a full set of mouth xrays with each dental treatment at Drovers Vet Hospital. Why are dental x-rays so important? ... Veterinary dental radiography has evolved only recently and the more we apply routine radiography to our dental patients, the more we are able to diagnose and see. Many dental disease processes in dogs and cats often go unnoticed as they are so good at hiding what is happening in their oral cavities. Only under anaesthetic can we get a full picture of what is happening and now with the addition of dental xrays, we are able to make excellent decisions about which teeth need to be extracted and which need to be monitored. In the picture displayed one can clearly see that to the naked eye this tooth looked 100%. This patient also displayed no clinical signs and was booked in for a routine dental due to bad breath. On xray one can clearly see the disease process (black areas) at each of the molar roots. These are tooth root abscesses and the one is even beginning to eat away at the root tip. This tooth definitely needs to be extracted!

12.01.2022 Unfortunately our phones seem to be playing up again. :( If for any reason you cant get through to our phone number 9306 3911 then please email us at [email protected] or call 0417 789 355 as a last resort :) Thank you for your understanding!

11.01.2022 Veterinary services have officially been classed as essential both in Western Australia and Nationwide. We have fielded a lot of questions and calls over the last few days as to whether we will remain open - the answer to this is YES, we will remain open. The Australian Veterinary Association has done a huge amount of work lobbying on our and your pets behalf and we are extremely appreciative of their hard work and result in this regard. Our opening hours remain the same exce...pt for Sundays where we will be open from 9am to 1pm. We are, therefore, still committed to providing you and your pets with full veterinary care 7 days a week. From tomorrow, we will also be splitting our staff into 2 resource teams (1 week on and 1 week off). This is to ensure continued veterinary care under all possible circumstances. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful clients for their care, patience and understanding displayed during this time and also hugely to my staff who have just been magnificent in their commitment and resilience. Thank you, Dr Wayne Shipham See more

11.01.2022 Bee Stings Our pets at home (especially curious dogs!) can sometimes put their paws or nose a little too close to an insect and get a nasty surprise. Bee stings and insect bites can cause a wide range of signs from just pain at the time all the way through to severe anaphylactic reactions. Allergic reactions can be as mild as a swelling or possibly severe and life-threatening. ... If you find that your furry friend has developed a swollen paw or muzzle and hives it is very possible they are having an allergic reaction. Sometimes if the insect is eaten a sting or bite in the mouth can lead to trouble eating, vomiting and sometimes issues with coughing and breathing. This is an urgent situation and veterinary care should be sought out immediately. If you catch your animal in the act of playing with an insect it may be in their best interest to stop them if you can. If you do suspect they have been bitten or stung, it is worthwhile having them examined by a veterinarian for possible signs of an allergic reaction.

10.01.2022 Lets talk pups and intestinal worms. Intestinal worms can be quite a yuck topic to discuss however, if left untreated intestinal worms are extremely detrimental to the health of animals, so routine working must never be over looked. We use an allwormer called Endogard. Routine worming with Endogard reduces the risk of infestation for pets, protecting all members of the family. ... Endogard provides broad spectrum control against the most commin intestinal worm species - roundworm, whipworm, hooking and tapeworm, including hydatids. Dogs need to be wormed at different times during their lives. Puppies are treated at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks old. Adults are require treatment every three months. These tablets are cost effective and are available as an over the counter medication. If you have any further questions please write them below or ask when coming in to buy worming treatment.

06.01.2022 Pain in Cats Cats are often really good at hiding when they're in pain. Some common signs you may see in cat that's in pain include;... -Excessive meowing -Altered meowing or purring sounds -Hissing or growling -Reluctance to move, or moves stiffly -Trembling or shaking when standing -Less playful -Hiding -Changes in sleeping patterns -Difficulty entering the litter box -Licking, biting, or over grooming resulting in a skin condition Cats metabolise medications differently to people therefore, many commonly available human medications may be dangerous to cats.
