25.01.2022 Purple Sweet Potato Balls Perfect snack for kids to take to school! In TCM, sweet potato is neutral in nature, tonifies deficiency and weakness, benefits energy/strength, strengthens spleen-stomach and kidney yin.... Purple-fleshed sweet potatoes are a great source of antioxidants, vitamins A, C, fibre and more. Anthocyanins give it its purple colour, a powerful antioxidant with a wide range of health benefits. Traditionally sweet potatoes are often steamed. The GI index of sweet potatoes is lower when steamed compared to baked. Ingredients include purple sweet potato, maple syrup, coconut oil, almond milk and mint leaves to garnish. First steam the sweet potato til soft, peel the skin off, and mash it into a paste, add just a dash of almond milk, coconut oil and honey/maple syrup. You may also add some dessicated coconut to give it a bit more texture. Roll into balls and garnish with mint leaves. PS: Just a tip on finding purple-fleshed sweet potatoes, a confusion that many people have - the purple-fleshed sweet potatoes have white skin on the outside. The sweet potatoes with purple skin have white flesh inside. Dont get them mixed up! #healthysnacks #healthyrecipes #tcmnutrition #purplesweetpotato #vegetarianrecipes #vegetarianfood #healthyfood #foodasmedicine #nutritioncooking #plantbaseddiet #healthylifestyle #drrachelchang

17.01.2022 The NSW Government is strongly encouraging NSW citizens to wear a mask in high-risk settings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in NSW. Wearing a face mask... provides an additional physical barrier to protect the community and help reduce community transmission. Continue to practise physical distancing, wash your hands regularly and if you are unwell stay in and get tested. For more information about the protection that masks provide against COVID-19 visit: https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-/health-advice-update-on-masks

16.01.2022 An interesting article on how the brain changes during pregnancy and postpartum. TCM emphasises that postpartum is an important transition period in a womans life, whereby proper care given to the mother for 40 days (6 weeks) after childbirth can have long lasting benefits to both the mother and babys health and well-being. Feel free to contact me for more information on postnatal care services offered.... https://www.nytimes.com//parenting/mommy-brain-science.html

14.01.2022 We took videos of what happens when you talk, cough and sneeze in different scenarios while not wearing a face mask. So which mask works best? This video case study by a group of UNSW Medicine researchers investigated. Find out more: http://unsw.to/WhichFaceMask
14.01.2022 For health therapists who work with stroke patients or patients with a disabled side, this is an interesting finding. This scientist experimented CIMT (constraint-induced movement therapy) on himself. The idea is to keep his stronger arm in a cast, so that he has no choice but to use the other one. His brain scans show that his brain had reorganized in just a few days. https://www.npr.org//a-scientists-pink-cast-leads-to-disco

11.01.2022 WHY WE NEED TO SOAK LEGUMES (BEANS, LENTILS) WHOLEGRAINS, NUTS AND SEEDS In traditional cultures, before we cook with these foods we would soak them overnight. This is not just to ensure that they cook faster but more importantly to improve their digestibility. Consuming beans, lentils and wholegrains without sufficient prior soaking and cooking can easily lead to flatulence and indigestion issues. Modern science has shown that phytic acid is present in the bran and hulls of... these foods, which can interfere with the absorption of important minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc etc) and inhibit enzyme function. Soaking these foods neutralises the phytic acid and activates the enzymes, therefore allowing better digestibility and minerals to be more available for absorption. #soakingbeans #soakinggrains #tcm #tcmnutrition #tcmfoodtherapy #tcmdiet #vegetarian #foodasmedicine #nutritioncooking #plantbaseddiet #drrachelchang
11.01.2022 SPRING DIET Yesterday marked the spring equinox in Australia. Spring denotes a new beginning, of activity, young growth and spreading. All life are rising up again from winter hibernation, as can be seen in the shooting of buds of young plants, and felt in the spring breeze. This is the time to look after our liver and gallbladder, to cleanse the body of the accumulation of heavy foods in winter. A light diet that incorporates the ascending and expanding qualities of sweet a...nd/or pungent tastes are in accordance with the nature of spring. This includes sprouts (of grains/legumes/seeds), other young vegetables (eg. young beets, carrots and radishes), and slightly pungent herbs (eg. basil, rosemary, dill etc). Salty and heavy foods are best reduced or avoided due to their sinking nature which can clog the liver and block its function. Wake up early, spend more time in nature, and offer ourselves to meaningful causes. That way we live in correspondence with the Qi of spring which is to rise above and nourish life. #tcmnutrition #tcmfood #tcmdiet #spring #springdiet #sprouts #drrachelchang

03.01.2022 WHOLESOME VEGETARIAN BIBIMBAP A question people often ask is how do I get all the essential nutrients in a vegetarian diet? One way is to ensure your diet contains a variety of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and legumes (lentils, beans, nuts and seeds). Another great way is to ensure your meal is COLOURFUL (naturally ofcourse). As different colours in plants indicate different beneficial properties, a general guide is for a meal to contain the colours of all the five eleme...nts (eg. have something green, red/purple, yellow/orange, white, and brown/black). Look no further than the Bibimbap! It is one of my favourite meals as its not only tasty but pretty much contains most of what the body needs. My version includes bean sprouts, carrots, zucchinis, spinach, shiitake mushrooms, sesame seeds, mixed brown and black rice, and topped with homemade gochujang sauce (see my previous post). Additionally you may sprinkle nutritional yeast on top (which is a good source of B12). #bibimbap #veganbibimbap #vegetarianbibimbap #healthyrecipes #tcmnutrition #vegetarianrecipes #vegetarianfood #veganfood #healthyfood #foodasmedicine #nutritioncooking #plantbaseddiet #healthylifestyle #drrachelchang

02.01.2022 Honey You can find honey recorded in the oldest surviving Chinese materia medica called Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Divine Farmers Classic of Materia Medica) believed to have been compiled during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25220 AD). It is recorded that honey benefits Qi and tonifies Middle Jiao, relieves pain, detoxifies, and harmonises hundred herbs. Traditionally honey has been used to moisten dryness in the lungs and/or intestines manifesting as dry cough or constipation. ...And helps relieve abdominal cramps due to Spleen-Qi deficiency. Externally honey has been used on ulcers, wounds and burns. As a healthier alternative consider substituting regular sugar with honey in your drink or everyday cooking.
