25.01.2022 When will there be a vaccine? When can we travel? When can we go to a concert? All eyes have been set firmly on the future for much of this year and it’s not always been a rosy picture. It may not be the best solution for fragile emotions either. One approach is a combination of realistic future goals and "living in the moment". University of Melbourne senior lecturer in clinical psychology Dr Nicholas Van Dam says, while there is good... evidence suggesting it’s helpful to have plans, fixation on not achieving those goals can be detrimental to mental health. To maintain the balancing act of making plans and living in the present is to let go of expectations of what will happen, the future is just another moment. Expecting the best or the worst are not especially helpful strategies. "We create unnecessary suffering for ourselves by endlessly planning, rehashing and trying to make sense of uncertainty The key instead is to work out what you can control and put in place as much as you can to make things as good as they can be. "If something bad happens, you can't pretend it's not there because then you're ... living a future life and trying to manufacture it." Now that a little bit more certainty is returning, it is good to keep reminding ourselves to have realistic expectations! Enjoy the new found freedoms! See more

23.01.2022 Gentlemen. When enjoying a private celebration this AFL long weekend, consider the impact on your fertility! In a recent study, alcohol consumption, in small to moderate amounts, has only minimal effects of male fertility. However, chronic or heavy consumption has a negative effect on semen parameters, including reduced sperm, concentration, motility and sperm morphology. It may also affect sex drive (libido), impotence, and sexual performance. The message is, consume in moderation and enjoy the AFL Grand Final this Saturday!

22.01.2022 To support those considering having a baby, Genea is providing some financial relief to patients. Those who don’t have a baby in three IVF cycles will have NO OUT-OF-POCKET CHARGE for the next two stimulated cycles and any associated frozen transfers. Because life is about more than money. The Federal Government is encouraging couples thinking of having a baby to also consider the broader benefits to the economy. I’m proud to work with Genea and their commitment to overcome financial barriers to IVF treatment. We’re confident in our ability to give patients the best chance of success in as few attempts as possible, but sometimes persistence is the key! Conditions apply. 20.01.2022 A fibroid (also known as a myoma ) is a non-cancerous tumour that grows in and around the uterus. Fibroids develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus. Symptoms to watch out for include: heavy or prolonged periods backache... period pain frequent urination infertility or miscarriages painful sex pain or pressure in the pelvic area Treatment depends on your symptoms, and the size and location of the fibroids. If you are experiencing pain or are trying to get pregnant, speak to your General Practitioner or make an appointment to see me. See more

20.01.2022 WHAT'S GOING ON DOWN THERE Many women ignore symptoms and choose to suffer in silence from annoying and distressing vulval symptoms. The external female genital area is called the vulva. Embarrassment or a belief that nothing can be done to help, are often reasons why some women choose to tolerate discomfort, in some cases for years. ... Vulval discomfort can take a wide variety of forms. Experiencing any of the following symptoms may be a reason to have your GP or Gynaecologist take a look: Itching, burning, pain, soreness, cutting, swelling, lumps, ulcers, cysts, or vaginal discharge are some common complaints. A characteristic of vulval problems is that discomfort can often remain unnoticed until it becomes severe. So, don’t learn to live with it. Often treating an underlying condition will alleviate discomfort. Investigate discomfort or distressing symptoms by contacting your GP or local gynaecologist. See more

18.01.2022 Every fertility journey is different. Comparing your unique challenges and experience to another may be unrealistic and place unnecessary pressure on you and your partner. Communication with your partner and your specialist is key. We're all on the same team.

14.01.2022 If you’ve neglected anything during the long Melbourne lock-down, evidence suggests it’s likely to be your own health. When planning how you’ll spend your early days of freedom be sure to schedule a reproductive health check. Women, you may have been putting off cervical screening or other health issues or investigations. Visit your GP especially if there is anything you are concerned about.

09.01.2022 Once couples decide that they want to start a family, many hope it happens quickly. When conceiving naturally takes longer than anticipated, it can be difficult to determine when it’s time to seek medical help. The natural pregnancy rate for couples who conceive within the first month of trying is 20% to 25%. After three months, that rate doubles to nearly 60%. The reason we define infertility as a year of trying without pregnancy is, if you... extrapolate those numbers out, at the year mark about 90% of couples will be pregnant. If you’re in the 10% that still hasn’t conceived, that’s when we recommend getting checked out to see what’s going on. Factors such as age and health conditions may also create barriers to natural conception. For example, if a woman is over age 35 and has been trying for six months without becoming pregnant, there may be an issue that a fertility specialist can pinpoint. Or, if she has polycystic ovary syndrome and experiences irregular or very few periods, trying for a year might not be worthwhile because the couple definitely need assistance in getting pregnant. 08.01.2022 Are heavy periods holding you back? Sometimes heavy menstrual periods require intervention. One surgical procedure that may help is endometrial ablation. Ablation can be an effective treatment for benign abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). The procedure involves the use of an instrument to surgically destroy the lining of the uterus with heat energy. 06.01.2022 Most gynaecological cancers except for cervical cancer have no screening programme, so noticing symptoms and getting them checked out is the key to making sure cancer can be diagnosed as early as possible and to ensure treatment can be most effective. There are five major gynaecological cancers affecting the cervix, womb, ovary, vagina and vulva. Symptoms vary but the most common are bloating, bleeding between periods or after sex, and changes in bowe...l habits. If in any doubt see your GP or gynaecologist. 04.01.2022 and the Nobel Prize for chemistry for 2020 goes to. two remarkable women, biochemist Jennifer Doudna, and microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier, for developing a revolutionary gene editing tool (CRISPR) that can change DNA coding. It works like molecular scissors cutting out part of a single DNA strand. This could revolutionise the way we treat genetic diseases and may have important implications for IVF treatment in the future and disease prevention.

04.01.2022 An oocyte pickup or egg collection is a procedure where the eggs are collected from your ovaries under light sedation. The egg retrieval process is quick and safe. Most women who have an egg collection under light sedation report mild pain after, similar to period cramps. 03.01.2022 Men, you need to be aware of the important role nutrition plays in fertility. Recent research continues to confirm dietary patterns can influence spermatogenesis in different ways. Our bodies are more exposed to the ingestion of xenobiotics, as well as chemicals from food production, preservation, and taste enhancement. Indeed, such research suggests that better semen parameters were observed in participants who consume a healthy diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and fish. More research is needed but for men who are planning for a family it is an important evidence that may help improve your chances.

03.01.2022 Not everyone requires IVF to have a baby. A common misconception is that visiting a fertility specialist means you'll automatically receive IVF. No doubt in many instances IVF becomes necessary as the most successful treatment option. But in a sizeable proportion of patients I find reversible endocrine causes, ovulation induction, surgery or cycle tracking that will get patients pregnant. When you see a sub-specialist in fertility, with a Certificate in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) like myself, all options are discussed in detail.

02.01.2022 Preserving fertility by egg freezing, a process known as elective oocyte cryopreservation (EOC), is on the rise. Detailed information can be limited, even confusing because there are numerous individual factors to consider. These include your specific risk factors, egg freeze success rates, intended use of future eggs, and procedure costs. Often the best action is to meet with a fertility specialist who can help you weigh your options. With the aid of Genea’s unique automated oocyte freezing techniques, my goal is to get the best outcomes from every cycle of egg freezing that patients undertake.
