23.01.2022 I wrote these words three years ago and they still hold true: I think we as a medical community are doing a significant disservice to mother-infant dyads when w...e look at breastfeeding and bottle-feeding as having one singular purpose: weight gain. I’d like to argue that there’s more at stake here. When feeding, particularly breastfeeding, doesn’t go well, many different symptoms can come about. This table shows the percentage of babies in our study who exhibited a particular symptom associated with tongue tie or lip tie. What the table demonstrates is that there are a LOT of issues that can come up when a tie gets in the way. Even in the presence of normal weight gain (or great weight gain), I am of the opinion that breastfeeding can still be pathologic. What infuriates me is when I hear a dyad asking their doctor (or in some cases, pleading with the doctor) to listen to what mom is saying about how dysfunctional breastfeeding is going, only to hear a response about where the baby is on the growth charts. While it’s certainly important to maintain weight gain, I will once again emphasize that the presence of normal weight gain does not mean that feeding is normal! Normal weight gain is not a trump card for other symptoms that are present, especially when those symptoms may be ruining a family life (like reflux/colic can). An example: let’s say I have plantar fasciitis. I go to my doctor complaining about it, but he responds with Well, you walked in here, didn’t you? If I continue to ask about pain, how my other hip is starting to hurt from overcompensating on my good foot, and how it’s slowing me down, and the response is You’re still able to walk so you’re good, I would probably find a new doctor. When a mom complains that the baby is causing pain or sucking in air or getting frustrated on the breast or leaking out of the sides of the mouth or any of the other symptoms displayed and the doctor comes back with a comment about adequate weight gain, it’s an intentional diversion. And that’s disrespectful on top of practicing medicine poorly. I maintain that like breathing and circulation and other basic functions, breastfeeding should be a normative behavior. Babies should be able to develop in a state of calm, where parasympathetic vagal nerve tone is high. Like if breathing or cardiac issues were present, the baby experiencing feeding problems is under a state of stress, and I don't think that is healthy, regardless of the baby's weight gain.

23.01.2022 One of the most common conditions I see babies for is plagiocephaly, otherwise, known as "flat head syndrome". It is something I have had first-hand experience in managing as a parent and a health professional. So exactly what is it? How can it affect your baby? And what can be done to help treat and manage it? This blog is the first in a series aimed to help you understand how it occurs, how to stop it getting worse, and then how we can improve it.... http://drreenamurray.com/plagiocephaly-flat-head-syndrome/

21.01.2022 Between the increasing use of hand-hand devices and heavy school bags, we are seeing more and more school-aged children with neck and back pain and headaches. Do you know how much your child's school bag weighs? Are you concerned about their posture? When was the last time they had a physical check-up? If it was more than a year ago now would be a good time to come in and let us assess their spine and muscular system. We'll conduct a full history and assessment, and screen fo...r common spinal complaints including Scoliosis and Scheuermann's disease, as well as some common tendon issues in children associated with growth and development. 15.01.2022 Pregnancy and childbirth are truly one of the miracles of life; the ability to conceive, carry and birth a child is nothing short of amazing. This journey into ...parenthood is often filled with excitement, joy, and anticipation, as well as pain and discomfort as the increasing demands of growing a tiny human take their toll on the mother’s body. Our team of practitioners help families from the pre-conception phase through to the post-partum period and beyond and I'd like to share with you a little more about the proven role massage therapists can play in assisting women throughout their pregnancies. Massage therapy is the most common alternative therapy recommended during pregnancy and has been demonstrated to be effective in a range of ways. In several studies, women have reported decreased depression, anxiety, and leg and back pain. Other findings as a result of a particular study include: depressed pregnant women experienced fewer prenatal complications as a result of massage treatment. a lower incidence of prematurity and low birthweight in the children of women who had massage treatment. postpartum depression and cortisol levels were decreased. The newborns of the massaged mothers also had lower cortisol levels than the newborns of the control mothers and performed better on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment habituation, orientation and motor scales. You can read more about this study here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2870995/ For more information on how we can assist you throughout your pregnancy, or to make an appointment please contact us on 4655 5588

05.01.2022 Around 2 months old, babies realize they have hands, and as you can imagine, that’s a pretty exciting development..

02.01.2022 Breastfeeding: it’s normal to not feel normal We’ve all seen the idyllic pictures on social media of smiling mums feeding their gorgeous newborn babies - but pictures are rarely shown of the mum who is googling breastfeeding tips at 2 am, struggling with a little one that just won’t feed. It’s normal to assume that breastfeeding will come naturally after the hard work of pregnancy and labour, but remember, your baby is experiencing a world of sensations for the very first t...ime and learning to feed is just one of them. Whilst the inclination and desire to feed is innate, the execution can sometimes leave mums asking ‘How can something so normal be so hard?’ Here are five comments about breastfeeding that I commonly hear as a Lactation Consultant: 1. It hurts Whilst our breasts are designed to feed our babies, in the beginning it often hurts; the almost round-the-clock feeding can leave your once untouched nipples sore. Poor latch, long feeds and tongue-tie can lead to cracks, bleeding or infection (thrush and/or mastitis) and make this new experience a more painful one. 2. It’s hard Like any new skill, breastfeeding takes time to master. It requires both mum and baby working together in unison. Occasionally, it works perfectly without any intervention but often it does not, and that is normal! 3. It takes forever It really does! Especially in the first few weeks, you can feel like your baby is strapped to your breasts 24/7. However, if this persists it can be a sign that things are not working as well as possible. 4. It’s messy It is, especially in the early days. Your breasts leak and you now wear pads for your breasts (bet you never thought you’d be doing that prior to pregnancy!). 5.It’s stressful It sure is. You are recovering from birth, sleep-deprived, trying to bond with and feed your baby - it is hard work, many would say the hardest job of all! Have you uttered these phrases? If so, you’re not alone. Recent studies have found that only 15% of Mums in Australia are still exclusively breastfeeding their babies at 5 months of age. Help is available. Lactation consultants can assist you and your baby to find comfort and happiness as you experience one of life’s great moments. As a mum of two, I know how beautiful and difficult the breastfeeding journey can be. You don’t have to miss out on the happiness & joy of parenthood. I'm here to educate and empower you to raise your child with confidence and ease. 01.01.2022 Feeding with breastmilk substitutes from farm-to-table affects the environment and climate due to its production, packaging, distribution and preparation methods. On the other hand, breastmilk production only requires the additional food that a mother needs to consume, therefore using fewer natural resources and resulting in almost no waste. Breastfeeding is one of the best investments for saving infant lives and improving the health, social and economic development of individuals and nations. #WBW2020 #breastfeeding
