23.01.2022 Medication overuse headache (MOH) also known as rebound headache is common and is responsible for the majority of recurrent daily headaches. People who use acute pain relief medications up to 2 or 3 times per week or more than 10 days in a month will trigger this rebound effect. - Current research suggests that frequent pain medicine use can lower your threshold for experiencing pain, and reinforce the pathways that process pain leading to worsening of your headaches - Ess...entially treatment is withdrawal of the offending medication, but in most cases that is easier said than done. Speak to your GP if you feel that you could be suffering with this type of headache to discuss a tailored withdrawal regime. - - - #headache #chronicpain #medicationoveruseheadache #reboundheadache #treattable #treatyourbodyright #healthawareness #healthylifestyle #patienteducation #generalpractitioner #doctor #healthsensemedicalcentre #perth #perthdoctor #perthhealth See more

18.01.2022 Hepatitis C is a virus that attacks the liver. The virus spreads through any type of bloodtoblood contact. The symptoms of chronic hepatitis C can take years to emerge, however liver damage can be silently progressing. Left untreated it can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver cancer and liver failure. ... Sharing drug injecting equipment is the principle route of hepatitis C transmission in Australia. Other risks include unsterile body art and piercing. New breakthrough direct-acting antiviral medicine were made available on the PBS from 1 March 2016. These new medicines offer a cure for between a 90-95% of people living with hepatitis C. If you have any concerns or queries 1. See your doctor/GP 2. 14.01.2022 Intermittent fasting: the science of going without?? - - Currently in vogue is intermittent fasting, which involves alternating intervals of extreme calorie reduction with periods of normal eating. -... In addition to weight loss, theres been claims of numerous of health benefits: 1. Improving glucose homeostasis. 2. Boosting energy. 3. Increasing growth hormone (GH) production. 4. Reducing inflammation and decreasing oxidative stress. 5. Lowering triglyceride (TG) levels and blood pressure. 6. Increasing resistance to age-related diseases like immune disorders, cancer, heart disease and stroke. - Unfortunately a lot of those claims have been made based on animal studies. Human studies are limited but do show some exciting results. It can be seen as a more flexible alternative to the traditional calorie restricted diet. - After all each person is different and has their own way of eating which means that there is no one-size-fits-all, perfect diet that is suitable for everyone. - If you are considering this type of diet, make sure to discuss it with your doctor/GP. Skipping meals and severely limiting calories can be dangerous for some people with certain conditions or people on medications. - - #intermittentfasting #intermittentfastingdiet #calorierestriction #health #healthylifestyle #diet #perth #westernaustralia #gosnells #healthsensemedicalcentre #doctor #generalpractitioner See more

13.01.2022 Not every headache is a migraine. Headaches can be primary (tension, migraine, cluster) or they can be secondary which means they are a side effect of a separate illness or injury. By telling your GP about the symptoms, location of pain and triggers, we can work out the correct diagnosis and discuss appropriate management. Keeping a headache diary to track the frequency of your headaches, the treatments used and how effective they were is also helpful to bring to your GP. - - - #headache #pain #tensionheadache #migraine #headachediary #symptoms #diagnosis #treatment #management #generalpractitioner #perthdoctor #healthylifestyle #perthhealth #perth #gosnells #healthsensemedicalcentre

12.01.2022 There is no one answer to the question of how to stop hay fever. - - Seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor about medications or treatments that will relieve your symptoms -... - Some available treatment options are: 1. Antihistamine tablets, syrups, intranasal sprays and eye drops. 2. Intranasal corticosteroid nasal sprays - These need to be used regularly and with careful attention. Different brands of INCS vary in strength and effectiveness, so it is important to read the labels and check details with your doctor or pharmacist. 3. Combination medications containing an antihistamine and intranasal corticosteroid nasal spray are available and offer the combined advantages of both medications. 4. Decongestant sprays unblock and dry the nose, but should not be used for more than a few days as they can cause long term problems in the nose. 5. Natural products such as salt water nasal sprays or douches can also be effective in relieving symptoms. 6. Allergen immunotherapy (also known as desensitisation) involves the administration of regular, gradually increasing amounts of allergen extracts, by injections or by sublingual tablets, sprays or drops (under the tongue). Treatment is usually for 3-5 years and is typically offered for individuals older than 5 years of age with severe allergic rhinitis. - - Speak with your doctor if your symptoms are troublesome as you may require further tests and need prescription medications. - - - - #spring #australia #hayfever #seasonalallergies #allergicrhinitis #pollen #allergies #allergicreaction #healthawareness #healthyliving #antihistamine #doctor #generalpractitioner #patienteducation #patientawareness #treatment #allergenawareness #eyedrops #nasalspray #antihistaminetotherescue #perth #perthhealth #perth #gosnells See more

11.01.2022 Self-examination is important and it is an easy way to understand your body and know when something might not be quite right. - - Examining your breasts each month will make you aware of whats normal and whats abnormal. -... - You can examine in a clockwise fashion or from top to bottom and make sure to feel the nipple as well. - - However, self-examination is not a replacement for a doctors visit or mammogram and should not be relied upon as a diagnosis. - - - - #breastcancermonth #breast #breastawareness #mammogram #patientawareness #perth #perthhealth #perthhealthyliving #generalpractitioner #generalpractice See more

11.01.2022 **PROSTATE AWARENESS** - - Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Australia with almost 20,000 diagnoses and close to 3,500 deaths each year. -... - In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. In the later stages, some symptoms of prostate cancer might include: 1. Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate 2. Finding it difficult to urinate 3. Discomfort when urinating 4. Finding blood in urine or semen 5. Pain in the lower back, upper thighs or hips. These symptoms may not mean you have prostate cancer, but if you experience any of them, go and see your doctor. - - A doctor will usually do a blood test and/or physical examination to check the health of the prostate. - - With September being prostate cancer awareness month, I would encourage all men over 50 (or over 40 if you have a family history) to talk with your GP about your prostate health. - - #prostate #prostatecancer #getchecked #prostateawareness #prostateawarenessmonth #cancer #cancerawarness #lovetheglove #generalpractitioner #doctor #perthdoctor #perth #perthhealth #westernaustralia #wellbeing #healthawareness #patienteducation #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #earlydiagnosissaveslives

11.01.2022 Most people associate hay fever with spring, when airborne grass pollens are at their peak. This is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis or spring hay fever. However, hay fever can occur at any time of the year. When symptoms occur all year round, this is known as perennial allergic rhinitis. Perennial allergic rhinitis is usually caused by a reaction to allergens around the home, such as dust mites, moulds, animal hair or fur, or occupational allergens. It affects nearly ...to 1 in 5 Australians at some point in their life. - - In hay fever, your body overreacts to something that would be harmless for most people. Your IMMUNE system (the bodys natural defence system) starts to respond as if its under threat, and releases a number of chemicals including HISTAMINE. This results in swelling and inflammation. - - Hay fever symptoms include: Sneezing, Runny nose and Itchy eyes. - - If it is possible to identify the allergen(s) causing the allergic rhinitis, then minimising exposure (AVOID TRIGGERS) to the allergen(s) may reduce symptoms. - - If symptoms persist, or affect your day-to-day activities, discuss treatment options with your general practitioner. - - - - #spring #australia #hayfever #seasonalallergies #allergicrhinitis #pollen #allergies #allergicreaction #healthawareness #healthyliving #antihistamine #doctor #generalpractitioner #patienteducation #patientawareness #perth #perthhealth #perth #gosnells See more

03.01.2022 I have not been very active on Instagram lately, but I am posting this because I feel that I need to provide some information and clarification surrounding this virus. COVID19 is a novel version of the Coronavirus. It is highly infectious and the key symptoms are: FEVER, COUGH, SHORTNESS OF BREATH and FATIGUE. The symptoms can be mild but patients can become significantly unwell especially those with underlying conditions or the elderly. Based on the data from China & Italy -... Mortality (death) is really significant in the >80 years old. In WA there are 90 positive cases currently and theres likely a few if not many more unconfirmed/asymptomatic cases. The problem with this virus is that it infects people and can be shed for 7-10 days without symptoms. This means people without symptoms will spread it to those around them and they will carry it without symptoms and then spread it further. People can inadvertently spread this deadly virus. So, thats the picture. It is here. We cannot get rid of it, but we can SLOW the spread and if we do that, we can hopefully give our healthcare system room to manage the ill people that will flood into our hospitals and clinics. What can we do? 3 simple things * Hand hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly and often * Dont touch your face: hard to do but if you have the virus on your hands, this is how it will get into your body * Physical/social isolation: this means you have to isolate yourself from others. Do not go out of your home unless you have to. If you must go shopping, get what you need and go home - DO NOT PANIC BUY. We need drastic measures otherwise thousands will be at risk and potentially die otherwise. We are all in this together. Staying at home will slow the spread, and help healthcare professionals stay well and at work, to maybe help you or someone you love who is in need of medical care and intervention. I am not talking about this to scare or cause panic. I think the media is doing a good enough job of that. It is really important that we do not become complacent. This is NOT the flu. @ Perth, Western Australia
