25.01.2022 Dear Friends , As the current situation progresses I feel that it is time that we take this all a bit more seriously. Despite our clinic ( and profession ) having impeccable hygiene and infection control procedures and PPE, I still feel that taking unnecessary risks is unwarranted.... I will be closing both Wynnum and West End dental clinics to any elective and non-essential treatment today. I feel that responsibility to my staff, my clinicians, my clients/patients, and to the community in general. As an essential service we can still provide urgent and emergency treatment, and for those in trouble our contact details are included. Stay safe, stay at home, eat well, sleep well, and look after your immune systems Regards Sandy McLean West End Dental 3844 4055 Wynnum Dentists 3396 1339 [email protected] [email protected]

22.01.2022 Australia's second largest health fund, Bupa, is threatening a four-month rent strike across its dental outlets, declaring it cannot afford to pay any rent to l...andlords during the coronavirus pandemic. The British-based multinational, which made $564 million in profit out of its Australian and New Zealand arms last year, wrote to landlords on Thursday after all but essential dental operations were cancelled. 17.01.2022 Private Hospital Insurance on its own, or with Extras? The Australian Government has a policy to encourage lifetime private health cover by financially penalizing over 30-year-olds without hospital insurance. Note that this refers to PRIVATE HOSPITAL INSURANCE. ... Health funds often tie in EXTRAS cover as a way of commercial value-adding. Extras cover is non-essential cover. Essentially, all Australian residents already have hospital insurance its called Medicare. However, as someone who has spent a three-week stint in hospital several years ago, I support private health insurance. The ability to obtain a private room, doctors of choice, and all food and board, for the $500 excess is quite worth it, compared to the actual cost. But it is insurance you have it in the hope youll never need it. Extras cover, as it says, is more of a budgeting tool. It is non-essential. If you dont use it to full value, then it doesnt accrue. This is where the funds make a large portion of their profit. But if you do use all the dental, optical, and other therapies often enough, you may get your money back (or more). There is a growing push to self-insure for these extras that is, deposit the same amount in the bank each month (that you would spend on the insurance premium) for these purposes. If its not used, then it will accrue. Admittedly, this requires a certain financial discipline. An important point to note is that hospital cover does not have to be taken with the same health fund as extras cover. (Funds wont necessarily encourage this!) The two articles below provide deeper analysis: https://www.theguardian.com//is-private-health-insurance-a https://www.choice.com.au///buying-guides/health-insurance Next post, well look at ways to compare health funds. 13.01.2022 Now available at our inner city clinic ... I have recently acquired a new clinic and am available here on Thursdays . West End Dental has been in the capable hands of Craig Stevenson for over twenty years but he has decided to wind down a little while still caring for his existing clients. While still based at Wynnum Dentists I will be sharing my time with my new more central clinic . ... Appointments available by calling ... new and previous clients all welcome.
11.01.2022 At least you can accrue unspent funds , rather than losing them at the end of each year ... makes more sense to me
10.01.2022 Wynnum Dentists will open alternate Saturdays from December, or perhaps more frequently according to demand. Would you be interested in a Saturday appointment?

10.01.2022 Hello! Recently, I left my previous Brisbane practice of 17 years. Over that time, I was delighted to treat patients whose lives, as well as their health, became important to me. Although I drafted this letter in the hope that it would be sent to those patients, I fear it may not have been. I post it here, so that my previous patients may have a chance to read it. If you do know any prior patients who may be interested, please feel free to share, or tag them below.... Sandy --- letter from Sandy McLean --- On Friday 13 October, I will be leaving this practice. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the years. As I re-evaluate life and the needs of my young family, I feel it is time to move on from McLeans Dental. Over the past 17 years, I have met so many interesting patients and tried my hardest to make dentistry enjoyable, or at least bearable, or occasionally amusing. I have enjoyed the stories, challenges and getting to know my clients so well and growing with you over the years. It is with a little sadness that I have decided its time to move on to the next dental phase in my and my familys ventures. I do so knowing that I can leave you in the very capable hands of Dr Simone Faoro. We have worked here together for the past 10 years now and I know that we both have similar philosophies and manner when it comes to dentistry. I genuinely and thoroughly recommend Simone and her services. Thank you for your loyalty over the years and trusting me to care for you dental health. Warm regards Dr Sandy McLean

07.01.2022 Recently, a number of patients have discussed with me their decision to change their current health insurer. They tell me they want something better than what they have but are unsure where to start to research a new private health insurance fund. It seems to be a fairly complex and confusing field, so I thought Id write a brief series of posts to try to explain some relevant issues as I see them. WHICH HEALTH FUND?... There are almost 40 different health funds nationwide. This is more than most people realise. Generally, we only hear about the funds with the bigger budgets for advertising (or other marketing sponsorships), or health funds with prominent flagship shopfronts. Some funds are open to everyone; some are industry-specific. For more information, follow this link: https://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/insurer Some funds are mutual funds, where membership fees (and profits) are reinvested into the fund for the benefit of members. Other funds are for profit: funds that use the health industry as a vehicle to deliver profit to shareholders. Some funds are Australian-owned, others arent. Heres a link to an interesting site for some basic information: https://www.privatehealth.gov.au/health/howhealthfundswork/ Next post, Ill try to explain better the difference between HOSPITAL and EXTRAS cover and who would need them. And finally, well drill down to the nitty gritty of choosing between the different funds. Until then, keep on flossing Dr Sandy McLean Oh, by the way Wynnum Dentists will be open this Saturday (10 March) as well as Saturday 24 March, if youre looking for a weekend appointment. Of course, were still open usual hours: Monday Tuesday 8am-7pm, Wednesday Friday 8am-5pm. Telephone 3396 1339.

03.01.2022 What are Preferred Providers ? Does the term preferred providers make you think a practice is somehow special? Perhaps the practice has undergone a rigorous examination of procedures, education, care, and other standards that set them above other dental practices? It hasnt. The title preferred providers is a marketing term.... Preferred provider practices are under no more stringent controls than any other dental practice. They are dentists contracted to a health fund, and the health fund sets the rules of the contract. And most of these health funds are corporations whose primary purpose is to increase profit, which usually results in cost cutting. What does this mean for the patient when a dentist is required by an external partner to decrease overheads? Often, a reduction in quality. You can read more on my website via this link, or in the attached article. In the past, I have worked both as a preferred provider, independently, and with a corporate health group that owns many dental practices. I now choose not to be involved with either of these and to remain independent. https://www.wynnumdentists.com.au/blog/preferred-providers
03.01.2022 Moving forward, at your next appointment you will encounter some changes as follows: Social distancing we have increased our appointment lengths, therefore mi...nimising contact between patients. Hand Hygiene We will be asking you to use our Alcohol based hand rub on entry and exit of our practice. Pre procedural mouth rinsing As most of you know, we often did this, however, this is now a compulsory measure. You’ll be asked to do this before we begin your dental procedure. It is a protective measure for all of us, that helps to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth. And as an added precautionary measure, please thoroughly brush and floss your teeth prior to your appointment. We have taken this opportunity to implement and update our policies and procedures, which include all members of our team frequently participating in ongoing education & training. For those of you who have been patiently awaiting our call, please know, you’ll hear from us soon. Thank you for all your support over the last few months. It is truly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you! #wynnumdentists #wynnumdentist #wynnum #wynnummanly #community #dentist #dentistry #dental #dentalhygienist #dentalassistant #socialdistancing #precautions #oralhealth #oralhygiene #smile #teeth
