Anxiety is the most common mental health condition that occurs during pregnancy.1 A 2020 research study (meta-analysis) found that massage compared to routine care reduce a pregnant wo...men’s anxiety symptoms moderately.1 This is good news as symptoms of anxiety can occur prior to falling pregnant and continue or worsen during pregnancy or some women can develop symptoms of anxiety for the first-time during pregnancy. Anxiety during pregnancy can involve: worry, stress or being on edge most of the time muscle tension having difficulty staying calm having trouble sleeping or going back to sleep recurring worrying thoughts that will not go away panic attacks 2,3 There are lots of potential triggers for anxiety during pregnancy and parents can feel experience anxiety about their baby’s health, concern about being a good parent, fear or worry about the birth, concerns about weight gain and body shape, how their new baby with integrate with their existing family and worry about managing parenthood. If this sounds like you, there are options for support and help. While massage is an option for helping to manage the symptoms of anxiety during pregnancy, it is important to be aware of the support options available, especially in more severe cases of anxiety. Beyond Blue offer free support via the phone at all times (1300 224 636), Pregnancy, Birth and Baby offer free support via the phone or video call seven days a week (1800 882 436) and PANDA offer free support 6 days a week (1300 726 306).
