15.01.2022 Ever wondered what goes into treating sunken eyes or tear trough hollowing? There are several distinct anatomical reasons as to why a patient may develop sunken eyes. If everyone is approached the same way, then results are likely to be inconsistent. That is why it is important that your cosmetic injector properly assess the underlying cause of infraorbital hollowing and therefore tailor the most appropriate treatment. This patient has infraorbital hollowing due to a def...iciency in the lower orbit resulting in an apparent lengthening of the lower lid. There is also volume loss of the deep fat pad that sits under the lower eyelid muscle (known as the SOOF) and a flattening of the bony midface. All of these anatomical features contribute to a drawn and tired appearance around the eyes. So in tailoring this treatment we need to address each of these deficiencies individually to create the most beautiful and natural outcome for the patient. Tear trough filler could be the answer The tear trough deformity (or sunken under eyes) is a concave hollowing that develops under the eyes and becomes more pronounced as we age. It is the junction between two facial muscles that is often made more obvious by bulging of the fat pad under the eye (also known as eye bags). These anatomical changes lead to a shadow under the eye which gives a tired and worn out appearance. This pat...ient wanted to look less tired and more well rested. Our treatment plan was to use of 1mL of a medium density filler under the eyes to support the tear trough ligament (like a hammock).
