24.01.2022 'I definitely dont have coronavirus. Its just a cold. In spite of not having had a swab to test for covid-19, there are many people who are certain their runny nose, their cough that started a few days ago, their sore throat, or even their fever, could not possibly be coronavirus. They go shopping. They catch public transport. They catch up with friends. They turn up at the office. In general, they feel pretty much like they ordinarily do. But it is simply not possible to ...Continue reading

23.01.2022 To all My Patients I know that this is a very difficult time for Everyone and that many individuals already had a number of difficult life circumstances before the arrival of Covid-19. While it is important to keep up to date with the latest guidance re Corona Virus and to be aware of conditions in the Neighbourhoods you live, Please also be mindful of what you can control ( like handwashing) and try and focus on those things rather than panicking about what you have no contr...ol over.(like government policy) All of the team I work with at Karalta General practice are available for telephone consultations, video consultations (via your smartphone) and face to face consultations if that is needed. We have known most of you for a very long time and we are happy to talk with you if you have any concerns or worries. In this unchartered territory no question is too silly to ask. For those with chronic health conditions such as Hypertension, diabetes, asthma, cardiac and respiratory disorders, autoimmune disorders and mental health conditions Please remember that it is vitally important that you continue to take your medications as we have prescribed them and that with some adjustments like telehealth we continue to help you manage your health with the help of your Allied health team and specialists. For patients who find themselves in Financial distress, at risk of Domestic violence or completely overwhelmed by teaching children from home while managing your own fears, I hope that we can continue to reassure you and help you through this difficult time. Please reach out either by calling the practice on 0243652983 or booking online via www.karaltagp.com.au Take care, stay safe and stay home. Dr Shauna

19.01.2022 Being young doesnt make you invincible. Young people can also experience severe effects from #COVID19. Watch Matts story about his experience with the illness, and learn more about prevention and risk: http://ow.ly/paY250A5t3C

13.01.2022 As we see Covid -19 numbers in Victoria continue to rise and more people admitted to hospital and ICU in Australia here is some helpful reminders for when you need a test. https://www.gps-can.com.au//im-being-tested-for-covid-19-w

12.01.2022 Thankyou. Thankyou for all doing your part by staying at home. I understand how tough that can be. Thankyou for phoning ahead to the practice and for allowing us to Triage your symptoms to keep ourselves and our staff safe. Thankyou for accepting that phonecalls and videocalls might be safer, at times for you and for me,but also know that we will always see you face to face if that is needed. We are still here to look after you and help you have the best health we can achiev...e. Thankyou for having patience about flu vaccines.... there has been unprecedented demand and we are doing as many as we can as stock arrives. Thankyou for understanding that Covid 19 is a steep learning curve for us too, we have literally hours of work each night staying abreast of the latest updates. Everyday I speak to people who although finding it incredibly tough are being cautious, sensible and sensitive to the risks that Covid 19 might pose to themselves and the Greater community. I also hear wonderful stories of kindness and thoughtfulness to neighbours, friends and strangers that bring tears to my eyes. So Thankyou. I truly know that this time is stressful, anxiety provoking, alarming, boring, depressing and a whole lot of other descriptors but together we will get through this. Re this mural which I love. The unsung heroes in this are, I believe our public health doctors who are working around the clock tracing contacts, checking in on covid patients at home and making very tough calls to keep us all safe.

12.01.2022 On this World Family Doctor day Id like to thank all the amazing GPs Ive met on my life journey, I clearly remember my own childhood family Doctor and how important he was to my family, to the GPs at the GP academic department at Queens University Belfast who inspired me , the GPs at Glengormley Practice who trained me and the wonderful GPs at Karalta General Practice. General Practice or Family Medicine is truly all of life care and I feel priveleged that everyday I get to be part of so many peoples life journey.

10.01.2022 This is a helpful post from an infectious diseases doctor explaining how to stay safe if a member of your household tests positive for covid-19.

09.01.2022 Yesterday was world mental health day 2020 and I saw this and loved it. To anyone who feels they aren’t coping, openly or hidden from all, please reach out to someone . Your GP is a really good starting point. I firmly believe everyone benefits from telling someone. Let’s remove the feelings of shame, nearly everyone has felt this way at one time or another.

07.01.2022 This image was created by a welsh artist using images of doctors/ nurses/ healthcare workers. Special shout out to all our colleagues working around the clock swabbing/ assessing and looking after the surge of cases in Victoria. Stay safe everyone. Wash your hands. Keep social interactions as safe as you can.

05.01.2022 Influenza vaccination Who? Anyone over 6 months who wants to protect themselves against Flu. Unfortunately the flu vaccine provides no protection against Corona virus. However we know as we move into winter our hospital system is likely to be really stretched with Covid infection and it would be sensible to try and reduce the need for admissions with complications of flu.... When? Usually we ask patients to wait until May but this year we are recommending sooner is probably better. However it is not a reason for panic. GP practices receive small batches of government funded vaccine at a time and will try and allocate to the most vulnerable patients first. We have been assured this year there will be no shortage but please be patient as we wait for more supplies. Cost? Private vaccination are $15 at Karalta General Practice. Government funded vaccinations eligibility- children 6m-5years -pregnant women -people over 65 -patients with certain chronic health conditions such as asthma, COPD, cardiac disease etc. How? From 5 April onwards speak to our receptionist staff re how we are running our clinics this year to keep us all safe.

05.01.2022 You may remember back in April I made a video regarding the risk to younger adults of Covid-19. Sadly a second person in their 30s has died in Melbourne in the past 48 hours from Covid -19. While it remains the case that the most vulnerable groups are the elderly and people with health conditions. We can no longer ignore the potential risk to all of us even people who consider themselves fit and healthy. I believe that the safest plan is total avoidance of this infection. If we all look out for not only our own families but the wider community we can get through this.

04.01.2022 Well said Dr Higgins.

02.01.2022 If you are looking for motivation, inspiration and a really good cause to help with the lockdown kilos look no further

01.01.2022 As we are all aware there are currently many sick Covid-19 patients in ICU in Melbourne including a number of doctors and health professionals. If coming to see me at the practice please consider wearing a mask- I will be wearing one. If you feel happier to have a telephone call or video call instead of a face to face consultation we are very happy to accomodate that. We all need to remember regular hand washing, social distancing and limiting social contacts will hopefully help us continue to be in a really strong position here on The Central Coast.
