21.01.2022 How much emphasis do you put on cleaning your teeth thoroughly? If you don’t brush enough or if you don’t floss on a daily basis with the correct technique, the dental plaque, a sticky biofilm of bacteria, grows and accumulates on the surfaces within your mouth and under the gum line. This accumulation of bacteria leads to the inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis.... Anybody, even the cleverest dental hygienist, who does not floss for a period of 2 weeks can develop gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums tissues that occurs when bacterial plaque is present, and it can manifest itself in a mild or in a very aggressive and acute form, depending on the kind of bacteria involved, but don’t worry because this condition is completely reversible and heals after a professional dental cleaning and some changes in the oral care routine. Why not book a professional dental clean with us or give us a call to discuss what you could do to improve your oral care routine! https://www.drsmile.com.au/

20.01.2022 You might be most familiar with the term plaque from a trip to the dentist’s office. It is only natural to wonder, Is plaque in the mouth the same thing as plaque in the arteries? The simple answer is no, but there may be a connection between the two. While the two types of plaque are very different, patients with gum disease do seem to have nearly twice the risk of also having heart disease. One theory is that bacteria from the mouth travel in the bloodstream to the arteries, where it damages the artery lining and contributes to arterial plaque build-up, possibly through inflammation. 11.01.2022 EARTH HOUR Are you switching off?

11.01.2022 Why does Tooth Sensitivity (Dentin Hypersensitivity) Happen? Tooth sensitivity is usually caused by dentin on root areas exposed due to receded gums or periodontal disease. Receded gums are very common and up to four fifths of people have gum recession by the time they are 65. When the root of a tooth becomes exposed it does not have a layer of enamel like the crowns of your teeth. Instead the roots have a very soft covering called cementum, which once lost leaves the dentin ...of the root exposed. Overzealous brushing or using a very abrasive toothpaste can also cause abrasion of the tooth’s enamel surface and expose dentin. A very acidic diet for example a diet with a lot of citrus food, pickles or soft drinks can cause tooth erosion and dissolve the tooth surface, exposing the dentin. Bulimia and GERD can also result in dental erosion and sensitivity due to acid in the mouth. See more

07.01.2022 A crown is also called a cap because it ‘caps’ or covers a tooth, so none of its original structure is visible. The crown protects and preserves a severely decayed or damaged tooth that has lost much of its original structure. It restores strength, structure and appearance, allowing you to smile confidently and to eat comfortably. https://www.drsmile.com.au//cosmetic-dentis/crown-bridges/
