09.01.2022 What a year it’s been... At the start of this year I decided to exit my practice and start consulting and locuming. My wife Eleni and I have always been out to seek adventure ... This for most of us is a HUGE fear. Leave the comfort of a practice. Yes I was anxious. Especially with kids and a mortgage The year has not been an easy one. My father got sick and unsure of the future, it became one of the catalysts, for us to leave the practice. Dad was going through kidney failure and we found out his cancer was back. After ammonia poising that almost killed him, he was left without being able to move much. I spent precious time going and feeding my dad breakfast. We spoke about life and his dream to live on the Gold Coast. I was with him until the end lifting him out of bed and helping nurse him to his last breath. Why am I telling you this? Because I’m real. I’m a doc just like you. Human and with all the stressors of life! After dad passed away I knew I was going to want space. I had arranged a long term locum in a quaint country town called Mount Gambier. I was told there would be over 100 patient visits per week and if I could build it that would be great. They gave us a nice townhouse to stay and we were off. Eleni Thomas and I were off to a place we had literally never seen before. To be honest I had never heard of it I walked in and there were 40 ish people In The book. Yep. I knew I had some work to do. By the end of the week I saw 74 I asked the CA if we could train a little. I gave her a crash course in reorganizing the book The day 1 day 2 process and what to say and when to say it We created some treatment plans and we were off We created separate adjusting and long consult times I started re-exams on everyone to see how they were tracking Within 8 weeks we saw 238 visits for the week (3 days in practice) I only had the 1 ca and some days I was seeing 120 patients...keeping in mind this was a closed door practice The crazy thing. I only did 1 week of marketing word of mouth took over from There. I remember being stuck in solo practice thinking is this it? What if I can’t build this again? Maybe I want to live somewhere else I knew back then I had to learn to market convert and retain I knew if I wanted to be successful in life and in practice.
