23.01.2022 evidence to show that there is actually a direct link between nasal breathing and our cognitive functions. We know that the smell system is closely linked to ...the limbic brain regions that affect emotion, memory, and behavior, which is why sometimes a particular smell or fragrance can evoke very strong emotional memories. This study shows, additionally, that the act of breathing itself, even in the absence of smells, can influence our emotions and memory. mindful breathing emphasizes not only the breathing component, but also the mental component of paying attention and becoming aware of mind, body, and breath together See more
22.01.2022 Nice video by Kurt Othmer on Neurofeedback. Thanks to DeDe Van Riper for sharing.
21.01.2022 I love this presentation.
20.01.2022 Recent research from the peer reviewed Journal of Neural Plasticity, and the following post - the plain english version from the Australian Spinal Research Foundation
17.01.2022 Great article. You can use measurement of your nervous system as another indicator. How well or poorly your system responds to stress (and how well it recovers) can be monitored by taking measurement of something called your "Limbic system". This involves measuring such things as heart rate, breathing rate, muscle tension, sweat on your hands and temperature of your hands. This is something we routinely do in my office, for those who are interested in achieving better health. The aim is to improve these markers when they show poor responses.
15.01.2022 Many of the comments made in this TED talk by Dr Rediger resonate with my understanding of the philosophy of Chiropractic, even to the Zen Buddhism thoughts of illness and disease - or in terms of chiropractic "dis-ease" or lack of ease. Truly not something that is "evidence based" , but then much of what is considered accepted evidence based treatment for a condition is simply based on the current understanding of the time. The risk of not being open to more than one way of ...doing things is that we deny what may work for some people. I think this may be the point Dr Rediger was making when he commented on the two perspectives of spirituality and science to explain spontaneous remission - neither are wrong. I prefer to work with people on an individual basis to see what is moving them (their health) in the desired direction - better function, often but not always less symptoms. Always as a team approach - how can I best support their health goals?
11.01.2022 At least people are starting to become aware of stress! And measure it. Skin conductance is one way - there are several others. What many people don't realise is that different people show their stress response differently. In my office where measuring people's stress response is part of their health assessment, I find some have quite healthy responses in their skin conductance during stress and recovery, but shocking responses in breathing rate and pattern, or in muscles tension. The goal is to get healthier responses across many measurements - representing a healthier "YOU"
07.01.2022 Each cell of the brain (neuron) is connected to every other cell. This is what is meant by a neural network. This is what allows for the free flow of informatio...n in our bodies. Every part of the body knows what every other part of the body is doing and we want it that way. By virtue of the Internet, Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, information gets around the world in a very similar way mimicking what our brain already does. In a manner of speaking, this levels the playing field world wide as long as you are connected. Our brain does something that we as groups of humans are learning to do and that is, the neural process of inhibition. The brain is selective in what information is moving around. It discerns and decides. It does this after taking in information from ALL other sources collectively. It also does this in a nanosecond. We all have a lot to learn from what our brain is already doing. Make it a great week! See more
04.01.2022 A nice explanation, and food for thought. It is part of the reason why when people come to see me for their health challenges I want to run a neurological stress assessment - I can get an objective measurement, a snap-shot if you like, of how they are responding, how it may be affecting their health.
03.01.2022 I would still choose to eat the healthy option, but maybe getting an idea of how healthy our stress response is, would be a good starting point. Some other good suggestions made at the end with activities that help off-set the effects of stress.
