22.01.2022 Happy Monday! As you may know, IVF can be successful, but can’t be guaranteed every time. The success can be impacted by multiple circumstances, one being the strength of the embryo that is being implanted. For many years the decision on which embryo to implant resulting from an IVF cycle has been based on the opinion of the Scientist of the appearance of the embryo on the day of the planned embryo transfer: this has been based on the historical standards of embryo selection.... With the increased use of the embryoscope + taking photographs of the embryos every 7 minutes we now have a great volume of digital photographic files of these embryos during their development. 18.01.2022 When it comes to pain relief during childbirth there are many things that we can do to make you feel more comfortable in terms of techniques and medications. One of the most important things that can help you to cope with pain during childbirth is having a good support person with you, whether that’s your spouse, partner, family or a friend. Often patients use massage, breathing techniques taught in antenatal classes, relaxation, mindfulness, yoga and hypnosis to help cope with the pain. There is evidence that acupuncture can help too during childbirth and using heat packs and finding the most suitable position is advised. Tell us, have you tried acupuncture during childbirth?

16.01.2022 Advancement in screening for Cervical Cancer Lets discuss how this test has improved over the years and why you are now required to receive a pap smear every 5 years (rather than every two years)!

15.01.2022 A recent study from the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology states that women may benefit from psychological measures to help manage their menopause symptoms. These measures include behaviour based therapies, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapies. There is now good evidence of benefit from symptoms such as hot flushes, irritability, forgetfulness, joint pain and vaginal dryness. This particularly benefits women in whom it may not be appropriate to use hor...mone replacement therapy, such as a recent history of breast cancer and even those patients who prefer not to take a hormonal option. These findings suggest that nearly 75% of women who underwent psychological treatment had benefit from their menopausal symptoms. This is a reassuring development and women are encouraged to investigate all options in managing symptoms of the menopause. If you would like to find out more methods of assisting you through the menopausal journey, contact Dr Terry Sheahan for an appointment today https://www.drsheahan.com.au/

08.01.2022 Recently obstetricians have become much more aware of the importance of mental health during pregnancy and after a baby comes into the world. Anxiety and depression affect at least one in five of the general population, however pregnancy is a time of particular physical and psychological stress for women. Apart from the physical and mental changes in their bodies, hormones are responsible for a number of other changes that can affect a pregnant woman’s moods and behaviour. Read more about Postnatal Depression and our suggested coping methods on our blog https://www.drsheahan.com.au//coping-with-mood-disorders-/

05.01.2022 PREGNANCY 'TIMEOUT' In the whirlwind of pregnancy and new motherhood, it can be easy to forget about the need to have some much needed quiet time. Every so often, practicing relaxation sounds like a luxury you cannot afford, but there are simple tips that can help you to relax during even the busiest of days. Deep breathing take a slow deep breath in, hold it for a moment and then slowly blow the air out through your mouth. Repeat a few more times with your eyes closed.... Try to drop your shoulders down and feel the tension leave your body as you relax your arms and fingers while you breathe out. Concentration is on a mental image, e.g. imagining that you are sitting or lying in your favourite outdoor place and focusing on the sounds around you, what you can see, smell and enjoy. You can imagine that you can visit this favourite place at any time. Happy Tuesday from myself (Dr Terry Sheahan) and my fabulous team

02.01.2022 According to a recent University of Queensland study, one in five Australian mothers are not receiving critical perinatal mental health checks. This is despite the fact that up to 20 per cent of women experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy or in the first year following their child’s birth. The issue is particularly valid during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic when many mothers or those planning a baby have been socially isolated from their family, friends ...and support groups. Many women are still feeling alone during these difficult times, and their mental health during COVID-19 may be affected. Because of the restrictions, many people have also developed more advanced diseases than they normally would have by presenting much later to their health professionals. We are here to support you!!
