23.01.2022 One of the interesting challenges of Shiatsu is - I cannot expect patients to open into their meridians if I am unwilling to open into mine. It means opening into my emotions and being able to be ok and work with what comes up in me while working. The appearance may be that it is just palpation and stretching... ... But the actual experience of being the practitioner is quite a demanding one! My teacher speaks of "Emotional Calisthenics" - being able to shift between emotional states smoothly without getting stuck in any particular emotion... Joy to Sadness to Fear to Anger to Worry, experiencing them and holding the opposite thoughts all while working the meridians... Its quite the demanding practice. So... 07.01.2022 So the last 2 days we looked at the meridians from a macro scale - as gross anatomical structures that respond to thoughts and emotions. And at the micro scale as bundles of collagen fibres containing structured water molecules acting as liquid crystals. So today - lets talk pathology.... One function of the meridians is to protect the organ from damage. This could be a physical trauma such as a blow or crash or emotional trauma such as overwhelming sadness, anger, fear... The meridian allows the body to shunt these energies away from the organs - distrubuting them over a wider area to ensure the force is not too great at any one point. Or the water molecules could shift configuration to a crystal shape to act as a short term storage system for the energy so it could be released at a more approapriate time. Animals will do this frequently... Something will happen and then once its over they shake and shiver and the energy get released back out. Unfortunately, many humans are not like this. Typically we will hold on to these events and not release them when an opportunity presents itself... And so the crystals build. So much so that its possible to feel them at the gross anatomical level... Usually they have been bound up for so long that it hurts to press on them. Yet this is where the work to release the tissue is... Not where the tissue is relaxed and healthy, but rather where it got stuck and crystalised. Getting the crystals unstuck can be done by pressure, by stretching or needling them... Release them and the function of the body improves. 07.01.2022 So yesterday we were looking at the gross anatomical structure of the meridians... Let's go down to the microscopic scale... So if you imagine going all the way down to the protein level and find millions and millions of triple helix collagen fibres...... And within each collagen helix is lined up water molecules... These water molecules align and move more easily longitudinally than laterally... So the meridians are like millions and millions of water pipes. The cool thing is that it seems like these water pipes are liquid crystal. The water is still in liquid form and the alignment of the molecules is similar to a crystal. Humans could possibly be walking, talking liquid crystals... Tomorrow we will talk about the function of these water pipes in protecting us as living organisms...
