06.01.2022 The virtual, making the real possible (960 words) In March 2020 the coronavirus lockdown led the board of The Old Ambulance Station to act quickly and close its... public spaces and postpone events indefinitely. Like arts centres world-wide the board and the resident artists were faced with not knowing when the centre could reopen or what projects or livelihoods would be lost as a result. The Old Ambulance Station, affectionately known as the Old Ambo, is located in Nambour, Sunshine Coast. It is typically a busy multi-arts facility that houses two galleries, a media studio and a black box theatre. Several arts/crafts practitioners reside in the building and its operations are managed by a volunteer board and team of dedicated community members. With the centre closed and the lockdown reducing the local foot and vehicle traffic, the large front facing galleries were empty. With no art and becoming increasingly quiet, the white walled spaces were left with an uncertain future and a fading purpose. Resident artist printmaker Sandy Doble has her studio close to the galleries and found herself sitting in the space alone worrying about the future for her art business, her family, the community and this rapidly changing COVID-19 world. Over time, to help her deal with the changes and concerns, Sandy started to draw, shifting her focus from the the computer screen to that of her surroundings. At first the drawings were of the interior of the gallery, showing the empty walls and cavernous spaces. They included drawings of the ‘Exit' and ’Gallery Open’ signs that in a lockdown hold new meaning. Drawings of vacant gallery chairs that sit as memories of past visitors and of objects and details of a space that has now become a safe haven for the artist and her ideas. These are introspective artworks, inward looking investigations of her thoughts about the virus, the isolation and the uncertainty, depicted through the peopleless galleries. In time Sandy’s gaze moved to the outside. She started to draw the empty roads and signs she could see through the windows. These are contemplation of the changes, confusion and mixed messages of the world beyond the gallery. Then boldly Sandy stepped out from her safe space. Not without some vocal opposition did Sandy sit on the path (dressed with a T-shirt that declares ‘Fuck off I’m Social Distancing’) and draw the Old Ambo from across the road. An act in front of a passing pandemic-alert public that was as much about her holding her ground as an artist as it was her reconnecting with the outside world. The drawings of the closed arts centre evoke meanings of an uncertain future for the arts, of a devalued sector in a time when artists are needed more than ever for our wellbeing and cultural expression. While Sandy was drawing, the isolated board were zoom meeting to determine a way forward for the Old Ambo that included the use of digital technologies. After seeing Sandy’s Facebook posts of her drawings and reading the supportive comments it was agreed that a meaningful and responsive outcome would be to create an online exhibition of Sandy’s art and capture her experience during isolation. As a board member and volunteer curator for the Old Ambo I recommended that a virtual gallery be built to provide people access to the facility during isolation and beyond. Having previously used Ortelia Interactive Spaces I knew it was possible to replicate the Old Ambo galleries and present a virtual display of Sandy’s work. With Ortelia’s exhibition design software I was able to build the gallery space to scale and importantly include the unique character of the Old Ambo, all be it with improved lighting and more refined floor coverings. Using the resources of the Ambo Media Makers and following the social distancing regulations, five short videos were filmed of Sandy talking about her experience and discussing particular drawings. With Ortelia’s Curator software the curation process is the same. The artwork is prepared (quality photographs taken, framed if necessary and labels prepared), the supporting video material is finalised (filmed, edited and embedded in the space), the exhibition is installed (artwork positioned, sight lines determined and lights set), and the visitors experience is considered (ease of navigation, key messages delivered, artist voice heard). Once the installation was complete the files were passed onto Ortelia to be published and returned to be added to the Old Ambo’s website. Titled First Wave, an artist in isolation experience, a Zoom launch for the exhibition was scheduled and a series of online workshops and talks by Sandy were planned. With this project the virtual has made the real possible. Given the gallery’s forward exhibition program, it was unlikely that Sandy’s drawings would be displayed together for approximately two years. The relatively quick digital process has enabled us to act immediately and present art that has a critical and current focus in an accessible and professional way. It has also meant that at a time of isolation and closure the Old Ambo could remain relevant and connected. Audiences are becoming increasingly comfortable with experiencing culture online. For the Old Ambo, as we carefully prepare to reopen, we are convinced that physical and online environments are both important and plan to provide more digital, online content in the future. For Sandy, First Wave is her first solo exhibition. Her autobiographical expression is a valuable legacy of the pandemic and through the virtual exhibition her collection and the story of her experience have been captured and made accessible, an important part our collective wellbeing and isolation experience. You can now talk a slow virtual walk through First Wave and see each of the 46 drawings and five videos.
