18.01.2022 This image shows the lacrimal glands and tear ducts. A lacrimal plug (or punctal plug) has been inserted into the lower tear duct to keep the eye's moisture from draining away too quickly. A punctal plug is a small, sterile device that is inserted into one of the small openings (puncta) of tear drainage ducts that are located in the inner corner of the upper and lower eyelids. After these openings have been plugged, tears can no longer drain away from the eye through these du...cts. This results in the tear film remaining intact longer on the surface of the eye, relieving dry eye symptoms. So where do the tears go? Usually they will simply evaporate from the eye surface without symptoms. But if insertion of punctal plugs causes watery eyes, one or more of the plugs can be removed. 16.01.2022 Dry eye myth (one of the most famous ones): Watery eyes can’t be dry. It sounds counterintuitive, but watery eyes are actually a symptom of chronic dry eye. When your eyes are very dry, they may itch, burn, or be generally uncomfortable. In response, your body produces extra tears to try to re-moisten your eyes. But this excess amount of tears can overwhelm your body’s ability to drain tears away from your eyes, causing them to water. Dealing with chronic dry eyes can lessen ...many symptoms, including watery eyes. (Healthgrades) If you are experienced watery eyes without any cause, this is worth looking into. Send us a direct message. #dryeye #dryeyes #Sydneydryeyes #dryeyesclinic #dryeyeclinic

08.01.2022 Did you know? Smartphone use is a risk factor for paediatric dry eye disease (DED). In a study of 630 children in South Korea aged 6-13 years, 9% of older children (Grades 4 to 6) and 4% of younger children (Grades 1 to 3) had DED, and spent an average of 3.2 hours a day on smartphones compared to 0.6 hours / day in normals. Normals spent 2.3 hours a day while children with DED spent 1.5 hours a day outdoors. After a month of smartphone cessation, all children with DED showed improvment in their subjective and objective signs. (Source: Myopia Profile)

06.01.2022 Often, the underlying cause of dry eyes is Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Meibomian gland dysfunction is blockage (or some other abnormality) of the meibomian glands so they don't secrete enough oil into the tears. Because the tear film on the surface of the eye then evaporates too quickly, MGD is associated with dry eye syndrome. Home remedies such as warm compresses and eyelid massage may help, but these usually won’t effectively relieve MGD symptoms.... If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eyesred eyes, a gritty feeling, itchy eyes and blurred visionsend us a message. Our Sydney optometrists can see you to discuss effective methods that will help give you lasting relief of your MGD or dry eye symptoms. #dryeyeclinic #dryeyesclinic #Sydneydryeyes #MGD #meibomianglanddysfunction #dryeyessymptoms #uncomfortableeyes

06.01.2022 Did you know tear evaporation changes with aging? A major cause of dry eye disease is decreased tear production as a consequence of lacrimal gland dysfunction, altered reflex secretion, diminished corneal sensation, or inflammatory destruction of lacrimal glands leading to tear deficiency. The second major component of dry eye is the rate of tear film evaporation. Dry eye is more prevalent in older patients. The increase in dry eye with aging is traditionally thought to be as...sociated with a decrease in tear production enhanced by hormonal changes. Clinical evidence of an abnormal lipid production system in older patients, in particular women, is established. It is therefore postulated that the greater prevalence of dry eye problems in an older population has an evaporative component. Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

05.01.2022 MADE: Mask-Associated Dry Eyes This term was introduced by an ophthalmologist who noticed a significant increase in dry eye cases around the COVID-19 outbreak period. Patients with preexisting dry eye disease complained of more discomfort, whilst patients previously not diagnosed with dry eyes are experiencing its onset. Upon further investigation, it was found out that wearing masks for long periods contributed to this surge of new cases. 04.01.2022 Cold weather dry eyes? One of the causes of dry eyes during cold weather is allowing the heater from your car vents to directly blow onto your face. 03.01.2022 Poor quality of tears can produce dry eye syndrome. What do you consider tears of poor quality? Tears are made up of three layers: oil, water and mucus. Each component protects and nourishes the front surface of the eye. A smooth oil layer helps prevent evaporation of the water layer, while the mucin layer spreads the tears evenly over the surface of the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly over the cornea due to deficiencies with any of the three t...ear layers, dry eye symptoms can develop. 02.01.2022 Summertime's effect on dry eyes: During the summer months, many Australians tend to spend more time outdoors, which means more exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Without wearing sunglasses, dry eyes can develop as the tear film on the eye can evaporate more quickly. Another reason why dry eyes are exacerbated during the summer is going in and out of airconditioned rooms. The AC causes a decrease in the moisture contained in our eyes. #dryeye #dryeyes #summertime #summer

01.01.2022 Dry Eyes and the Current Pandemic One of the things everyone should avoid during these times is rubbing their eyes because the Coronavirus can spread through the eyes, just like it does through the nose and mouth. Dry eyes can be uncomfortable and may lead to rubbing, especially if this has been a habit. Consider adding moisturising drops to your eye routine. If you must touch your eyes for any reason, even to administer eye medicine, wash your hands first with antibacterial ...soap for at least 20 seconds.
