25.01.2022 Recover valuable disk space: this will be very important for those who use Surface tablets, Intel ComputeSticks or any laptop with a small SSD primary disk drive.
22.01.2022 Attending the grand opening of the new Olive Medical Centre at 599 Ross River Rd cnr Bamford Lane. Weeks and months of preparation go into a seamless opening day on Monday.
22.01.2022 Hitting the road this morning for Alligator Creek was a really nice start to the day. After ascending a steep driveway, teaching new clients about managing iCloud storage, backups and iPhone photo management, this was the view that greeted me as I headed for the car. August is a very different time here in north Queensland - whats not to love. The gnome in bottom left of shot (excuse the pun!) enjoys this view every day - and I can understand why hes chosen this spot.
22.01.2022 This is not the only malware weve seen on the Mac platform recently - please note you need your antenna up and active while using either Linux, Mac or Windows computers to protect from malicious software.
22.01.2022 No, Im sorry but ... just no.
21.01.2022 While the work vehicle is in for a service, its good to walk to see local clients - we are fortunate to live in one of the nicest places in the world!
21.01.2022 This is the chaos after a morning meeting when you and your partner both run businesses - how do you start your day?
21.01.2022 Upgrade or not - its getting more difficult to prevent the process from running automatically, while still retaining the ability to receive security updates from Microsoft. Theres no pressing reason to upgrade to Windows 10 right now -- and more reasons to hold off. As always, any issues or questions, please get in touch. Read on... theres more after the drop. Windows 10 - there are many amazing things that have been written into the software that make it appealing. There ...are many other things that may give you pause before upgrading - have until July 28, 2016 to take advantage of the free upgrade offer. Theres now a stable software program written by the "Ultimate Outsider" to take back control of the upgrade choice: look for the "Download Standalone" option, and review the User Manual if you need guidance on how to use it. "... the Disable Operating System Upgrades in Windows Update feature is much more comprehensive in neutralizing ... Windows 10 settings ..."
21.01.2022 Recently had some feedback from a design firm who have redeveloped a clients website. We took the opportunity to migrate the clients email to a cloud platform, and received this message: "James, great job. that was the smoothest transition Ive seen. You explain it so well for the client. Any jobs that we do needing email or website migration I will send your way. Thank you." We dont work solely for gratifying feedback like this, but it sure does make days more fun - and on with the show...
20.01.2022 I answered a phone call yesterday while standing on a ladder halfway through preparations for cutting over a retail shop to a new kit of networking equipment. I answered the phone (as I do) "D-stress Computers, this is James." To which my caller responds "James James hold the ladder steady."... Confused (ironically I was standing on a ladder!) I said, "Pardon?" He responded "James James hold the ladder steady." I mentioned "Im not sure I understand what you mean?" He replied "Theres a song on the radio, which goes James James hold the ladder steady." I queried "How can I help you?" He angrily mentions "Well youre a fucking idiot!" and ends the phone call. I admit, Ive not heard the song - must be a good one? I carried on with my tasks, a little bemused. All in a days work, I guess...
19.01.2022 A far more likely scenario - on the day the computers controlling the planets nuclear arsenal become sentient.
18.01.2022 As Ive said to those who have asked this recently, Im suggesting to most people who are happy with their current Windows computer setup to postpone their Windows 10 upgrade: let the issues work themselves out, take the time to visit a retail outlet and see if you like the changes first. If youre looking to turn off the notifications for Windows 10 altogether, while retaining the option to choose it in 6 months once the issues are ironed out, please follow this process: - ...Right click on your taskbar - Select Properties - Click Customise - Locate the GWX icon in the list - Change the drop-down to Hide Icon and Notifications If you need assistance, please just get in touch.
17.01.2022 QuickTime on Windows - Alert, security update The short, short version - remove QuickTime from your Windows computer(s) - there are security problems in QuickTime that Apple will not be redressing as the program has not been updated for the Windows platform for ages, and will not be maintained. If you needed QuickTime to allow MYOB to put images on your PDF invoices, MYOB have advice on resolution - you can keep V19 if you want to.
15.01.2022 Breaking news: Adobe have released a critical update to their Flash Player, which is a required part of your computer to render almost any video content. Takeaway; use the link at the bottom here (from each browser you use on the computer) to check which version of Flash Player is installed, if it is older than 18.0.0.203 then follow the prompts to update it. General advice: Youll be regularly prompted to update Adobe Flash Player or Reader, these are so prevalent that they are often targeted by malicious actors online as a vector to install malicious software on your computer. When youre prompted to update Adobe Flash Player or Reader, do the update.
15.01.2022 This photo was taken after delivering a new computer to a client near the Pinnacles, west of the Ross River Dam. As much as I enjoy zipping about town and seeing up to 6-8 clients in a day, there is joy to be had in the peace of a longer drive, and the serenity of pausing to take in the view...
15.01.2022 I have to say, the view from the mobile office of Ryan Moody Fishing is better than many others Ive worked in. An additional plus is being greeted by doggies, 12/10 would pat again!
15.01.2022 Now that your internet is back online, enjoy this Friday comic from one of my favourite modern artists, John Kovalic.
15.01.2022 NBN down at your place? NBN in Townsville appears to have some widespread outage for maintenance this morning; since 4:30-ish on 19th March.
14.01.2022 Issues with Outlook overnight after updates? Some are reporting an issue with Outlook crashing shortly after loading since the most recent batch of Microsoft updates. Temporary fix: Hold CTRL. When you hold the CTRL button on your keyboard when clicking the Outlook shortcut on your Desktop, Taskbar, Start Menu or Start Screen, Outlook will detect this and asks if you want to start Outlook in Safe Mode. This will allow Outlook to start without crashing, until your tech can resolve the problem. Rationale: its likely that a recent security update has closed a vulnerability that used to allow a legitimate Outlook addon to run. Since the security hole was closed, the addon can no longer run and Outlook crashes. Running Outlook in Safe Mode allows it to collect email while not loading the problematic addon.
12.01.2022 Ill just leave this here.
11.01.2022 One of the routine jobs we have is decommissioning discarded hard drives on behalf of our clients. Reason for this is to prevent drives at the tip being found and analyses for nefarious purposes. There are two way to do this: dismantling (which is what you see here) where the shell is opened, the drive platters are physically damaged before being junked. The second way is simpler: the drive should be smashed with a heavy hammer.
11.01.2022 Not every day is like today: this is definitely an uncommon tool of the trade for someone in IT.
09.01.2022 I rescheduled something earlier this week for this exact reason... peaceful and drama-free deployments and transitions do not happen by accident. We wish you a stress-free Christmas and New Year break.
08.01.2022 No, I’m sorry but ... just no.
08.01.2022 You cannot accidentally take advantage of the bug, but the technique is easy enough to replicate - its best to turn FaceTime off, for now, until this is patched: (theoretically Apple have this turned off at their end until a patch is released, but...)
08.01.2022 NEW SCAM WARNING: check and verify all "new" banking details. If you receive an email with a statement or invoice, advising of new banking details from an existing supplier, verify with the company directly BY PHONE - there is a new scam that sends legitimate looking invoices and statements from seemingly legit email addresses, with modified banking details. Many 10s of thousands of dollars have been given to the bad guys already.
08.01.2022 We have been featured in an important article about scams and how to protect yourself online: if you know someone who could read this and benefit, please tag them or draw their attention to this piece.
08.01.2022 Keep an eye out for this fantastic podcast - exceptional artists with a fantastic space for broadcast and live streaming.
07.01.2022 Please take note: if you see this email, or one like it from Australia Post, the email itself doesnt contain a virus but the link will run a script on your computer that will infect you. Receiving the email doesnt mean youre infected, but clicking the link is very likely to trigger many problems.
06.01.2022 You may not be aware that not-for-profit organisations can benefit from discounted prices for software; read this article to determine if your NFP, sporting club or charity qualifies!
06.01.2022 Internet down at your place? Ive had offline notices from businesses in the CBD, Pimlico, Mundingburra, Bohle and Kirwan so far this morning commencing around 1:30am - all Telstra Fibre TTP/TTN NBN sites - there seems to be a widespread outage, but their Outages page is not yet reflecting the issue.
06.01.2022 Just arrived back in Townsville after a two-day job in Dalbeg, south of Ayr. Undertook major operating system upgrades, addressed a number of networking and software issues, and was able to make not only the business owners happy, but enable their pickers / backpackers to have greater flexibility in their Internet access (very happy people!) Nice to see another side of Queensland, be raced by an emu or surrounded at one point by a flock of drunken cockatoos (fermented cane = fun times) - but very good to be home.
06.01.2022 Adobe Reader has recently performed an automated update, which in a lot of cases has caused printing issues for some PDFs. If you are in urgent need of a fix for this: uninstall the current version of Adobe Reader, then download DC 2018 (their previous version) from ftp://ftp.adobe.com//adobe/reader/win/AcrobatDC/1801120063/... its important to ensure it does not automatically update after you have installed it, this is one of the choices in the Edit -> Preferences menu Adobe are aware of the issue and are working on it, there is no ETA on a fix as yet.
04.01.2022 In relation to the "can you hear me" phone call scam: whether you have read about this before or not, whether you think it might affect you - please take this warning seriously. 1. If you do answer the phone and are asked questions that seem to be fishing for a "yes" or "no" answer, do not respond and hang up immediately. 2. Never give out any personal information over the phone when you are unsure of the caller. 3. If youre concerned about your information having been compromised contact IDcare
04.01.2022 Ransomware - Malicious software Alert! Adobe issued an emergency update to its Adobe Flash Player software today after researchers discovered a vulnerability that was being exploited to deliver ransomware (variants of Cerber ransomware). Flash has over one billion users, so the odds are everyone reading this is affected by this update. Most of our customers have automatic updates on their Flash Player software, but to ensure you are protected, as a precaution, we encourage you to update your Adobe Flash Player (aka Shockwave Flash Plugin).
