25.01.2022 Ability Arts are working with the City of Mandurah on an exciting art project for International Day of People with Disability 2020. If you would like to share y...our story with our community - which focuses on your skills, interests, hobbies, contributions to your community, workplace, family and friends, please consider getting involved in this project. The Chorus Ability Arts team will support you by providing a free art kit which will contain everything you need to create an amazing self portrait, plus suggestions of how to get started to express your story through a self portrait, caption and selfie. These stories will support our community to acknowledge the great value that people with disability add to our community. People with disability are so much more than their disability alone! Please share this post with anyone you think may be interested! If you would like to be involved in this project please email Elli at Ability Arts [email protected] Closing date for applications: Friday 14 August

24.01.2022 "Some days, we are chefs, builders, landscapers, divers, personal trainers, event organisersSome days we are counselors, big brothers or sisters, hairdressers,... scientists, teachers and sometimes, were even support workers." Meet Tim Hill - Support Superstar from our Rockingham Neighbourhood It is easy to see how Tim succeeds in whatever he does and how he is appreciated by team members, people we support, and their families. Living by one golden rule treat others how you would like to be treated Tim acknowledges that people more or less think the same way, and people living with a disability are no different. Eager to meet any challenge and adapt to any role with a positive outlook, it is no wonder Tim was nominated by a fellow team member for his diligence as a Support Worker and Peer Mentor. Tim attributes his style to supporting others as a result of learning from the Interchange veterans holding years of experience, and the fresh faces bringing in innovative ideas and creative ways to support others to the table. Thank you for being a positive and active contributor to anywhere you go, Tim! We think you are AWESOME! 23.01.2022 On Fathers Day its time to thank our dads for the sacrifices they make and how theyve helped us in our lives. Its a great opportunity to share Joshs story.... He was born blind and is a longstanding VisAbility client. Josh Giblett featured in our Visionaries series two years ago and spoke of his determination to live life his way. He doesnt use a mobility cane and in his younger years used to ride around on a bike - much to his parents anguish. In 2018 he became a father and four months ago his second daughter arrived, so life is very busy for him and his wife. Josh is still working in the same job within IT and loves it. Watch his story below and to all you fathers out there - Happy Fathers Day. First shot of frame shows Josh with a piece of computer equipment. #Visionaries #DadsInPerth #VisionLoss

17.01.2022 Some local children put pen to paper to write heart-warming letters for our supported accommodaiton customers during the height of COVID-19 in WA Alanagh, fro...m community group Cycling Without Age - Sorrento helped to organise the initiative. Local children, most of whom are from the families that support the group, wrote positive letters of support to send to our customers. When COVID-19 started to take hold we had to wind down our ridesthough to have a presence in the community was still a priority. Riding the coast on our community Trishaw promotes intergenerational relationships and inclusivity; this letter writing imitative values the same qualities Alanagh said. Our customers were so delighted to receive their mail from the kids, some even replied back and were sent the below photo as a thank you Cycling Without Age Sorrento is an independent chapter with no regular funding, and are made up of volunteers. 16.01.2022 Two of our therapists, OT Paige and Speechie Mel-Sue, have come up with the idea of collating a bunch of books they had for use as therapy resources, and for gi...fting to customers The idea stemmed from the knowledge that books are so beneficial to developing literacy, attention and engagement skills, and even creating parent-child connections through reading together. Not everyone can afford to update or create home libraries, so they thought theyd create a community library at our Mirrabooka office. Feel free to loan, collect or donate! All books have been given a sanitary wipe down

16.01.2022 Our second and final finalist for the 2020 Excellence in Leadership Award is Monique Ziegelaar from VisAbility. Monique has been nominated for her work as a speech pathologist with VisAbility delivering the ground-breaking How I Learn Project. This project empowers students with disability to take ownership of their high school journey. ... Monique identified a shortcoming in the education system while working with school students with disability. She realised that students individual educational needs were usually discussed at an annual school meeting between teachers and parents, but rarely with the students themselves. Leading a specialised team of VisAbility colleagues, Monique created the How I Learn website which places the student at the centre of their educational needs and provides access to advocacy resources and tips for students, teachers, parents and carers and schools. Chloe, a Year 11 student, says: This time last year I was about to start Year 10 and I was dreading having to explain my vision impairment to a new set of teachers. This year I am feeling more prepared than ever and that is because I have used How I Learn. The judges noted that this project had great merit and its continuous approach to learning will lead to significant positive outcomes for students with disability and their parents. In her downtime, this amazing lady loves to socialise, often hosting big German dinners, with her husband, two young boys, and niece. 06.01.2022 Are you heading to tomorrows AFL game? Our mate Paul will be there - and hell be there with bells on thanks to the new power assist device on his wheelchair! ... Paul is a die-hard West Coast Eagles fan who goes to every game, but was having trouble wheeling himself from the bus stop to his seat at Optus Stadium due to the long distance. Pauls OT Kelsie worked with him to trial various power assist devices, which attach to Pauls manual wheelchair and gives him some extra push when he needs it. After selecting the device that best suited his needs, Kelsie and Paul applied to the NDIS for the Alber Smoov Power Assist, which was supplied by our friends at HospEquip, and now hes ready to cheer on the Eagles for a win in front of a home crowd (Hands on the wheels Paul! )
