14.01.2022 Have you seen these in the city? The 2.2m cast bronze sculptures - named Koorden, the Noongar word meaning strength - represent the Noongar people of South-Western Australia and their enduring cultural traditions. They were created by Ballardong Noongar painter Rod Garlett and sculptor Richie Kuhaupt. Production began with Rod’s creation of six canvasses representing the body markings symbolising leaders of Aboriginal cultural groups around Perth, and from these paintings Richie produced base figures and fibreglass moulds. The individual body markings as well as ceremonial headdresses and ceremonial sticks were applied to the moulds, leaving only the frame-like form of the body markings for the bronze casting. #NAIDOC2020

14.01.2022 Welcome to Birak! There are six Noongar seasons in WA's South West region, marked by changes in the local environment. Traditionally Noongar people hunted and gathered food according to the seasons, knowing which animals and plants are plentiful at those times. Birak generally December and January is the season of the young, represented by the colour red for heat, sun and fire. During Birak season the rains ease and the hot weather starts to take hold. Hot easterly wi...nds in the morning and cooling afternoon sea breezes meant this was burning time of the year for Noongar people they would burn the land in mosaic patterns for fuel reduction, to increase the grazing pastures for animals and aid germination of seeds for new growth, and to make it easier to move across country. There are new babies venturing out of nests in Birak season, though many such as the magpies and parrots still stay close to their parents. Reptiles will be shedding their old skin for a new one, and paperbark gums also shed to reveal new colours. The vivid orange flowers of the moodjar (Christmas tree) are traditionally used to make a lightly alcoholic brew the flowers are put into a gnamma (water hole) to ferment over several days, then the sweet drink is used to celebrate the abundance of food traditionally on offer during Birak.
