11.01.2022 As you may know, we are one of many COON families in the region. And in light of the COON fiasco making the rounds yesterday on all media outlets nationwide, here is another perspective from our sister. My surname is COON. I am from a big family in regional NSW. We have a 5th generation business and are well known and respected in the community and surrounds. Our name existed long before COON became a racist term. And although I was concerned to hear COON cheese was changin...g its name, this had no direct effect on me or my family due to being no family line of ours. Until November 2020, when CBA bank created a 1800 word list of offensive words and language. COON made that list. Our name had been blacklisted which all four major banks implemented. We were unable to make transfers, recieve pays or use the term COON in any reference or remittance descriptions. Although I have managed to resolve this problem through the proper channels, it is now a developing issue and where will it end?? Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that there are still hundreds of families in Australia who own the surname COON. Now we have to fight for the right for our children to grow and flourish in a peaceful society without feeling ashamed or bullied or frowned upon?? I grew up in a highly populated aboriginal community and I am well aware of the racism they have had to and continue to endure. When COON is used as a derogatory slur, of course it's racist and offensive. Dick, Cock, Hooker, Gay ..... all local FAMILY names and all can be offensive when used in that context. We have embarked on a very slippery slope so again.....where will it end?? I cannot believe the aboriginal community or anyone is genuinely offended by our name. This is OUR name. 06.01.2022 We Farewell our beautiful Katarina today. Kat has been an absolute asset to our business. She came to us early 2020 and did a six month stint, we would not have made it through the crazy busy Covid lockdown without her. She returned in August and again helped us through harvest season, Christmas and New Year. This all-rounder is going to be dearly missed and we wish her all the very best in her future travels. Katarina - you will always have a home here with us.
