25.01.2022 Senior Toddlers Halloween walk through

25.01.2022 This week the children and educators in the Junior Toddlers Room have dressed up as different book characters in celebration of "Book Week." We have also been taking the opportunity to make the most of the beautiful weather eating our lunch outside on the verandah.

24.01.2022 Today we learnt about how plants take on water. This experiment involved celery and some coloured water. Scientist Sarah gathered us around and talked about what we were going to do. We looked at the celery and the food colouring and discussed what we thought may happen in this experiment. It was decided by everyone that the celery is going to change colour. Together we labelled the colour that was going in and counted 8 drops as it was added to the water (the big jars needed... 10). Once the colour was in the water, each piece of celery was added and used to stir the colour in. Once all were ready, we placed them on top of the lockers and the children will watch them throughout the day for any changes! Why does celery absorb food colouring? Plants need water to survive and they draw water up from their roots through their capillaries. The capillaries are hollow and act a lot like a straw. Adding colour to the water helps us visualise this usually invisible process.

23.01.2022 Busy exploring the Zoo

22.01.2022 Dudley Street Pre Kinder Room Snail Melbourne Cup- This morning we held a very important race in the Pre Kinder Room. The children searched the yard to find their winning snail. We spent some time training our snails on the table in preparation for the big race! The track was a bit damp due to the drizzle and was at an incline, we made sure we took this into account during the training time.... It was time for the big race! There was lots of cheering as the snails took to the track, and the snails were actually pretty fast! Once the race was over there was a celebratory lap of the yard by the winning trainers, and then lots of dancing and cheering in the drizzly rain

21.01.2022 Last week the Senior Toddler children celebrated Book Week and Footy Day. The children had an amazing time and loved seeing all there friends dressed up. We can't wait to see everyone dressed up in their spooky Halloween costumes on Friday.

20.01.2022 Today Scientist Tegan did an experiment where she magically put pencils through a bag filled with water!! She began by filling a zip lock bag with water and sealing it at the top. All eyes were on Tegan as she poked the pencils through the bag. We were all amazed when it didn't break or pour out water!... A few of our friends had a turn to put the pencils in just to make sure that Tegan wasn't cheating. We carried the bags to the sink and as Tegan pulled the pencils out, out came the water. Everyone was very excited to see this in action! How it works: No water spills out the holes because the zip lock bags are made of a polymer. Polymers have long chains of molecules that are flexible. When you poke a sharp pencil through the baggie, the pencil slides in between the chain of molecules that make up the polymer. The molecule chains make a seal around the pencil that won't let the water out

18.01.2022 Today the children of Pre-Kinder took on some challenges and were able to cooperate in some learning activities about Static Electricity. Scientist Steve demonstrated ways to create static electricity by using balloons, rubbing the balloon on their heads, charging the electrons to create static. The children were explained other forms of static electricity such as lightning and ways on how the charge is released.

14.01.2022 Today the Senior Toddler's went on a "Zoo Adventure", we all wore our adventure hats, collected special animal food and went on our way to explore the animals in their enclosures. We could hear different animal sounds as we explored the Zoo and was careful not to wake the sleeping Koala in his tree. Later in the day the children watched a virtual Zoo tour on the computer where they were able to see many different animals.

Making a Spoony person is fun for all the family and a great activity to keep children and grown-ups busy and it’s lovely to see the smiles on the little ones faces when they visit a Spoonville near them! If you would like to contribute to Dudley Street Spoonville, please feel free to add your Spoony person to our little community. The more the merrier

06.01.2022 Today’s experiment was with Scientist Lucy and we made a lava lamp! Firstly we put some vegetable oil into a jar and then topped it up with water. As the water was added we watched it fall to the bottom of the jar. Next, we added some food colouring and watched as this also fell to the bottom with the water. We counted as Lucy added the drops of colour.... Lastly, we added some alka-seltzer tablets and watched as the colour began to dance and shoot up and down the jar a bit like fireworks! Both the children and educators were very excited to see this reaction, it was safe to say there were lots of Ooohs and Ahhhs. What happened: A lava lamp works because of two different scientific principles, density and polarity. - Density is the measurement of how compact a substance is: how much of it fits in a certain amount of space. If you measure an equal volume of oil and water, you’ll find that the water is heavier than the same amount of oil. This is because water molecules are packed more tightly. This means that when the two are put in a container together, the water will sink to the bottom. - Polarity prevents the oil and water from mixing together. Water molecules are polar because they have a lopsided electrical charge that attracts other atoms. Oil molecules, however, are non-polar- they don’t have a positive or negative charge, so they are not attracted to the water molecules at all. This is why water and oil don’t mix. The alka-seltzer reacts with the water to produce carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These stick to the water droplets. The water/gas combo is less dense than the oil, so they rise to the top of the flask. At the top, the gas bubbles pop and escape into the air, allowing the dense water to sink back to the bottom again.

04.01.2022 To commemorate "Remembrance Day" the children in the Junior Toddlers Room worked together to create a special group artwork to display in the front foyer. The children painted, pasted and collaged various coloured materials to create a large poppy to commemorate our soldiers.

01.01.2022 Today in Pre Kinder we did lots of fun things! As the sunscreen was being applied Lucy read the book Tiddalick the Frog, this tied in with our NAIDOC week celebrations. NAIDOC week provides a great opportunity for us to teach the children about the long Aboriginal Australian history, the beautiful culture and the amazing achievements of Indigenous Australians. Reading this Dreamtime story together was a wonderful experience for us all, as we used our imaginations to see the... words come to life. We then went outside and enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather! The children enjoyed some water play in the dirt/digging area, in buckets next to the sandpit and in the play trough. We had the hose dripping just enough for the children to be able to catch some water to add to their play, some of our friends even jumped under for a quick sprinkle to cool down!

01.01.2022 Today the Pre Kinder children and Educators celebrated Diwali. Diwali (or Deepawali) is one of India's biggest festivals. The word 'Deepawali' means rows of lighted lamps. It is a festival of lights and Hindus celebrate it with joy. During this festival, people light up their houses and shops with Diyas (small cup-shaped oil lamp made of baked clay). They worship the Lord Ganesha for welfare and prosperity and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and wisdom. To acknowledge this special... festival we had some different activities for the children, these included: - Glitter slime: this represented the sparkling lights - The children made their own candles - We used some facepaint to do henna pictures on our hands and the children who wanted to received a bindi on their forehead. The bindi is placed between the eyebrows, the place of the sixth chakra (the seat of concealed wisdom) - We played some Diwali celebration music and did some dancing - The Educators dressed in traditional clothes to show the children - The children coloured in a welcome namaskar lady wearing traditional dress and placed a bindi on her forehead
