25.01.2022 COVID-19 has radically changed the way young people are being educated around the world. According to UNESCO, the global scale of education disruption is unprecedented, with more than 60% of the worlds student population affected. Cambridge International and the Award partnered in 2018 to offer a holistic, formal and non-formal education solution for young learners. As the world continues to face the challenges of COVID-19, both organisations are committed to supporting teac...hers, parents and carers to motivate young people to stay active, engaged and positive during this time, whilst also continuing their education. 25.01.2022 "The skill I chose was reading, it was a personal challenge I set out for myself to after each book keep a diary to help me understand it. I have a reading difficulty and have always disliked reading as I felt unmotivated and tedious but after reading a few treasures I was captivated and developed a new love for it. During lockdown I have been reading and it has honestly been such a fundamental factor in my life." Inspiring words from Participant Charlotte Neo, speaking about the benefits of completing multiple levels of the Award and how this has impacted her Skills development.

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Year 12 students Emily, Jennifer and Phoebe from Camberwell Girls Grammar School on completing their Gold Award. A fantastic achievement during a year that has thrown many curveballs!

23.01.2022 Did you know the Award is recognised by many Universities as a good measure of a students potential? Some of whom reward Award holders with early entry into University? Whilst many things are changing at the moment, one thing young people can be certain about is that the Award and the experience you gain as a result of your Journey is still very much valued by Employers and Tertiary Educators alike, giving young people an edge when seeking higher education or employment. As ...always we are constantly developing partnerships with Universities, Vocational Training Institutions and Employers to ensure we continue to grow the number of organisations who formally recognise and value the experience of doing an Award. One of our long-standing partners, La Trobe University, is also committed to ensuring that young peoples opportunities remain as unaffected by this period as possible. Their early entry program Aspire, is still running and they have taken many measures to make the program more accessible than ever. The Aspire program rewards students for their leadership and community engagement with an early conditional offer and Aspire ATAR into their chosen course at La Trobe, scholarships, travel funding, a support network and access to our Enrichment Program giving you everything you need to succeed. 22.01.2022 Did you know completing an Award can help you get into University? Our partnership with La Trobe University means that completing any level of the Award automatically qualifies Participants for their early entry program, Aspire. Successful Aspire candidates receive an early conditional offer to study their dream course at La Trobe, taking the stress out of final exams and the ATAR. Last year, every Duke of Ed Participant who applied became a successful Aspire candidate! This year Aspire applications will open earlier, on 19 April 2021, so if you're in Yr 12 and close to finishing your Award, now is the time get back into your Award Journey! #WORLDREADY

20.01.2022 77% of Gold Awardees surveyed in 2019 said they've continued volunteering in their community well after finishing their Award. Through completing an Award, Participants experience first hand how rewarding the experiencing of voluntary service can be, how it not only enriches the lives of others, but also their own. Continuing with Voluntary Service is also one of the many reasons Participants choose to continue with their Award Journey and complete a Gold Award. #WORLDREADY

18.01.2022 Well done to the 12 @Kardinia International College Year 9-11 students who have been volunteering with The Smith Family throughout remote learning in the student2student peer support program, which helps disadvantaged young readers across Victoria, as part of their Service Section of their Award. Lara Skerratt Sam King Mannix Vincenzino Joshua Hughes... Mia Eastman Claudia Tippet Georgia Borschmann Liam Long Caitlin Rea Amelie McConnell Flora Retallack Isabelle Vincenzino It sounds like it has been a rewarding experience for everyone, with Lara and Isabelle providing the following feedback: The s2s program was a way for me to connect with a student who needed support with their reading. I feel that this program was beneficial for both myself and the student as I was able to learn to be encouraging towards the student, hopefully motivating them to continue to enjoy reading. I was also able to witness the reader progress as they gradually began to read more challenging books. Isabelle Vincenzino, Year 11 Being a part of the Student2Student program has been an amazing experience. It took a few calls for my reader to warm up to me, but now I truly look forward to our calls. My reader loves reading, and she often does the characters voices, adds sound effects and eagerly debates what we think is going to happen next. Especially in lockdown, s2s has been a great way to connect and help out in the community even when we cant see anyone. Lara Skerratt, Year 11

17.01.2022 "One of the most important success factors in any job interview is your ability to prove your skills. A great article giving you tips on how to ace your next job interview: https://www.adelaidenow.com.au//ea247be60d92340a2c4fa6dca7 Did you know that completing an Award gives you valuable soft skills and, cr...ucially, helps you collect examples to explain in future job interviews how you successfully used these skills to add value to your employer? 17.01.2022 Some amazing images from Jarred Palancas Gold Award Journey. Jarred completed his Award through Gilson College - Taylors Hill and was recognised at last years Gold Award Ceremony at Town Hall. For Jarreds Skills he learnt film making and video production, for his Physcial Recreation he did his own gym program to keep fit, for his Voluntary Service he leant his time to his local church cafe, learning barrista skills along the way. For his Adventourous Journey he rafted dow...n the Snowy River in 6 days while developing skills and learning about the surrounding environment. Finally for his Residential project he served and provided entertainment at the Avondale aged care home. From his time as a Participant Jarred was described as a "fantastic leader" by his assesor and teacher. Well done Jarred!

17.01.2022 Were hearing a lot about the effect that this period is having on the opportunities and prospects for our youth. With much of the media reporting that youth will bear the main economic brunt of this crisis and are to be hit hardest by unemployment and uncertainty. Whilst this might be true, over here at Duke of Ed, were choosing to focus on the positives. One of which being, that the Award can be really beneficial during times like this, and have a huge amount of impact on... young peoples lives when they need it the most. In fact it was a very simimlar enviroment, a post war depression, that lead to the creation of the Award! The Award was first introduced in 1956 to motivate boys aged 15-18 to become involved in a balanced program of voluntary self-development activities to take them through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and adulthood. A period that was made considerably more difficult by all the changes and disruption to their way of life and intended future, caused by both World Wars. The aim was to instill self-confidence and a sense of purpose that would support them into their future and help them to become well-rounded citizens. These tennants of the Award still ring very true and whilst the age limit has been extended and the program is now offered to all young people, regardless of gender or background, its aim & outcomes remain the same. Throughout history the framework has remained robust, helping young people to find their passion, purpose and place in the world. This is because the skills, attriubtes and attitudes it builds are universal qaulities that help young people flourish, no matter the context. But especially In times of uncertainty, change and upheaval, these qulaities become even more impactful. Which is why we believe now more than ever the Award can help young people succed in whatever life they choose for themsevles. This is giving us a greater sense purpose and even more engergy to deliever on our mission of ensuring the Award is accesible for all young Victorians, when they need it the most. 16.01.2022 "For me completing multiple awards has allowed me to work a lot on my skill being cooking/baking as I’ve chosen this for all three levels. Through baking every week I’ve been able to see my progression from the start of Bronze where I was making pretty basic cookies to being halfway through my Gold and making all different flavours of macarons. If I didn't keep going with the award I don't think that I would have developed such a love for baking!" Hannah Smajila, Gold Awardee

16.01.2022 "During the lockdowns, I couldnt go to meetings with my school environmental committee, so Ive been finding new and creative ways to lessen my environmental impact from home. Ive been planting my own vegetables, eating vegetarian food and even after finishing the service section of my Award Im still trying to limit my environmental impact as much as possible". 09.01.2022 Did you know the Award has nine evidence based impact measurements? Number one is an "Improved Educational Attainment". What does this mean? Download the Award's Impact framework here to find out: https://dukeofed.com.au///2015/06/IAF-impact-framework.pdf, or read more below. The Award is a non-formal educational programme which promotes the development of skills such as perseverance, self-confidence, self-awareness, self motivation and self-belief, which can increase a young person’s commitment to formal education. We believe that the Award helps develop critical and creative thinking, problem solving and time management skills which improve how well young people do in education. It also increases young people’s willingness to set stretching goals and take on new challenges. BE #worldready

08.01.2022 "I think the main thing I will take away from this experience is that I have been able to become closer to myself and have gained a better understanding of who I am or who I may be in the future after my high school journey. Being able to understand my interests and hobbies has helped me to appreciate what brings me happiness and allowed me to better cope with emotions and stress. This program has allowed me to begin to uncover my own journey and story. I am beginning to dis...cover specific traits and characteristics about myself as well as the hidden potentials within me. I have learnt that if I want to reach my goals and achieve my full potential I can, as long as I believe in myself because ultimately it will be my decisions that directly impact my life and will determine who I will become. I have to continue to believe in myself, that I can do it if I am determined and focused. That anything is possible. This is what the Duke of Edinburgh International Award has helped my achieve." Caitlin Teo, Participant from Strathcona Girls Grammar See more

08.01.2022 This weeks good news story comes from Horsham College whose students were featured in the local paper in a story about getting a head start in pursuing Tertiary Education and employment through the experience of doing The Award. The story also touches on how the Award improves higher education prospects through University partnerships such as with La Trobe Universitys Early Entry Program, Aspire. Both students featured in the story have applied to La Trobe, through the Aspire program, using their Award to qualify for the Voluntary Service requirement of the application. Both students intend to study degrees in industries where there is a high demand for graduates, demonstrating the value of when Schools, Universities, Employers and Youth Development Programs work together to create more and better opportunities for young people!

07.01.2022 Were so proud of all our Participants who are finding creative ways to continue their Voluntary Service Activity during social distancing, using a digital solution. To help the new Bronze Award Participants at her school, and as part of her Voluntary Service Activity, this Award Holder created these videos to show them how to use a Trangia cooker so they would be prepared for their Practice Adventurous Journey. In this 3 part series, she goes through all the parts of the T...rangia, how to cook with it and how to clean it. 06.01.2022 "Completing the Bronze Award encouraged each Year 9 to be a bit more adventurous and take risks which had positive effects within me because I felt more prepared to be out in the community and create opportunities for myself rather than waiting for them to be made for me. Upon completing the second Award, it was evident that Duke of Ed was impactful because I was more condent in my ability to put myself forward and generally be less cautious. The reason Duke of Ed taught me this is because whilst teachers were there to guide us, each person who wanted to do Duke of Ed at this point, had to be proactive and seek out opportunities available". Isha Richards, Silver Participant at Santa Maria College

06.01.2022 Duke of Ed volunteer Mr Ken Murtagh OAM received an Order of Australia Medal recently in recognition of his service to youth and education. In this news clip, Mr Murtagh says Kids do as much learning outside the classroom as in it. Wise words Ken!

03.01.2022 "The COVID-19 restrictions have made life difficult especially for Victorian students in 2020. Continuing with the Duke of Edinburgh award has been challenging but extremely worthwhile. 03.01.2022 Last night Bronze Participants at Kardinia International College attended a camp craft session on campus, which included cooking a meal using a Trangia, learning how to set up a tent and discussing the impact that we as humans have on the environment, to complete their Adventurous Journey section of the Award. This year has thrown many curveballs, with Participants continually having to adapt the Award to whatever restrictions have been in place. But it's really inspiring to ...see young people taking advantage of what can be done at school to continue their Award Journey. In two weeks these Bronze Award Participants will be involved in the Year 9 alternative program where they will gain exposure in an array of activities to develop teamwork, confidence and put them out of their comfort zone.
